Original Episode Here:
Caller H shares his personal experience of seeing God and Jesus, which strengthened his faith in a unique personal form of Mormonism. Hosts Jimmy and Eric challenge H to provide well-reasoned arguments for his beliefs. The conversation becomes heated as H struggles to give clear, direct answers and fails to present concrete evidence for his claims about supernatural healing and mind-body connections. Despite the hosts' efforts to guide the discussion, the call ends abruptly with H dropping off the line

I had a Morman supervisor that had 6 kids and gave 10% of his paycheck to the church while working 10-12 hours a day, 6 days a week. He was driving 60 miles to work and 60 miles back home every workday. He was also an elder at his church. He was proud of his young adult son for doing missionary work in other countries. Religion can be a brain washing catastrophe. Especially when you're feeding your family on only 90% of your earnings. And then teaching your children the same irrational decisions on how to live their only one life that they have to live.

True. Like in the old days, when the church was the one financial etc support network in your village, tithing etc absolutely made sense. Cos it was a form of social security, where they'd help you/feed you if your husband died, became homeless etc. Nowadays it's just not like that. Government does that job, & most churches ( especially the big rich ones ) aren't going to be there to help if the wheels fall off. This is what happens when people aren't taught the real reason for these traditions like tithing , praying etc. When the situation no longer calls for it, they don't even know, & can still be taken advantage of, by people that use those traditions for personal gain instead .

When my mom and I started to deconstruct we decided we would give our ten percent to charities or to buy food for homeless and stuff. One church lady told us that we were stealing from god. @dhwyll
@dhwyll 5 ай бұрын
Of course there is a "mind-body connection." One of the main biological processes is hormone response and one pathway to produce hormones is the brain. Stress results in a release of cortisol which has effects in the body. Nobody denies the existence of a "mind-body connection." And it is trivially true that we don't understand all of that connection, so to keep harping on it is not helpful. We already know there is such a thing. But that connection, as far as we can tell and as far as we have been able to study, is purely physical. It is a biochemical reaction between various organ systems. Where does the "and then a miracle occurs" step happen? For example, in response to stress, the hypothalamus releases corticotropin-releasing hormone. This leads to the pituitary releasing adrenocorticotropic hormone. That leads to the adrenal glands releasing epinephrine (adrenaline) and norepinephrine (noradrenaline). Where is the "god" portion of this hormone cascade? The body has healing processes. It's why when you cut yourself, you don't bleed out. The blood clots, the wound closes, new skin grows. Is the claim that god is involved somehow? So since we know that the body can heal itself, by what justification can we claim something else is involved? We have an entire field of medicine dedicated to showing that certain interventions have effects that can help heal things. Where is the evidence that god is such a thing? When we've studied the effect of prayer, we've actually found that those who know they are being prayed for have worse outcomes. It all boils down to the question theists cannot answer: Is there anything that happens on its own or is god required for everything? If there is something that happens on its own, how do you tell the difference between those things that don't require god and those things that do?

FoMo here. I don't believe this knucklehead at all. I think he may have had a dream and if he did he knows for sure that it was a dream. I listened to ridiculous tales just like this one in a great number of fast and testimony meetings by members whom would get up, bear their testimony, and make up wild stories about supernatural experiences they have had since the previous fast and testimony meeting. It got so bad that the bishop dictated to the ward that any further telling of these wild stories would need to be cleared by the bishopric before they were shared to the members during the once a month bearing of the testimony on fast Sunday. The number of these tales dropped off dramatically after that admonition by bishop. He took their fairytale hour away by discouraging lying. This is what organized religion does. It encourages lying to keep up with the mystical experiences of the Joneses. Lying to keep your faith/status/popularity, etc is sad

If his spiritual experiences were while waking, he probably had hypnopompic dreams. I have a fair number, and I thought maybe it was a sign of schizophrenia or other mental illness, so I asked a sleep doctor about it and he told me that what I had experienced were hypnopompic dreams. The second scariest one I had was when I had a dream that a semi-truck was about to hit me head-on. I consciously "decided" to wake up because I didn't like the dream, but when I opened my eyes, I saw the semi-truck in the room still coming at me. Just as the truck appeared to smash my face into the grill, it very rapidly faded away. The truck appeared blue, probably because I dream in color. 34:19 The scariest experience I had was when I woke up and thought I was dead because I couldn't move because I (thought I) was dead. (Extreme claustrophobia started to kick in.) My lack of belief in an afterlife helped me. I first thought, "Oh no, I'm dead." Then I said to myself, "Wait, I can't be dead because if I'm dead I can't think I'm dead." I struggled a bit to wake up and then I became unparalyzed. (This incident was probably "sleep paralysis," rather than hypnopomic dreaming.)

People alter their religious beliefs, adjusting their understanding to imagine a better, more loving god, or a less harsh punishment after life. Until everyone has their own personal god, that fits with their morals or preferences. Religions teach that truth can be found by closing your eyes and bending your head. While that may be a good start, it needs to be tested against reality. Otherwise we have set up an epistemology that accepts any thought that feels right as Truth. Which results in believing conspiracy theories.

Confrontational _content,_ especially with raised and tense voices, has always put me on edge. I'm willing to bet it's some buried childhood trauma causing it. Why do I keep watching these shows? Anyway, because of that I get conflicted where I know obviously the caller is full of sh-t -- though I'm not completely certain the caller knows it. And I know it's important to confront the lies and nonsensical thinking not only to maybe help the caller but also let the audience know that, yeah, this is anti-logical thinking that makes no sense and is super reliant on jumping to unfounded conclusions. But still... could you do it nicer? Lol This is why I couldn't do a show like this. I'd be too gentle, trying to guide and encourage the caller toward realizing it doesn't make sense. Maybe the guy isn't consciously aware he's lying, but he might be and so that's where you guys have gotta be blunt and direct and not give him room to hide being more lies and BS.

I actually empathize a lot with your point, raised voices and confrontation tend to trigger traumatic flashbacks for me, but what I would offer is that people like Jimmy and Matt have to go through thousands of callers every year, and many of them aren't even remotely interested in listening (not just being obliviously ignorant, but willfully), so they end up trying to take over their platform to spew religious doctrine, to which the hosts need to stop definitively. I definitely would be a lot softer too, but honestly I'd probably get walked all over on lol, and after years of it I wouldn't be surprised if I had a bit less patience too, especially when callers like these hold up the endless line of other callers waiting on hold.
