Thanks for the review. I, too, am very annoyed on the lack of the 10Gbe on the i7/i9 models without having to spend more $$$, and, and, use up a precious slot. I was looking to upgrade just because I' would've liked to have the latest version of the TVS-87x-i7 model and am sure I'm not alone on this, but QNAP's sales dept just gets in their own way out of greed, in my humble opinion. PS: Im a current owner of the QNAP TVS-872X-i7 with 32GB RAM.

I bought the TVS-h1688x 18 months ago to replace an aging Dell Poweredge server in my homelab. So far its worked well but the 12th gen architecture of these new machines are interesting.

Happy 2023 to everybody and NASCompares! It is quite an expensive platform IMHO, and indeed too bad that only the i9 version comes with 10GBe. Poor choice and keeps me using the older platforms. (and consider upgrading the CPU for our i5 versions..) What I do feel QNAP really missed on this model is the accomodation of SSD's (without loosing an HDD slot). As QuTS Hero really needs the OS & Apps on an SSD, and the M.2's for caching. BTW, I would recommend ZFS over EXT4 in 2023, if I'm honest. There is a wee bit steep learning-curve for QuTS Hero but it is worth it. And, for me, very important, is the support and Support from QNAP, which is quite good actually. And talking about confusion, I do not know if you have ever noticed but in 2021 & 2022 some of the released QNAP hardware the later releases are sometimes "missing" hardware. Look, for example, for audio-output & speaker just to name an example. I know as we bought the early versions, with audio, and later purchases of the same model came without audio! And yes, the whole debacle about QVR Pro & Elite is irritating, as if QNAP Marketing is trying to make-up for some of their mistakes/choices?

About only the i9 having 10GbE... that's just a PCIE adapter (presumably QNAP), which you could buy for any other model.
@InspectorGadget2014

@@alexsarbu3978 True, but just making that differentiation for an already quite expensive (i3, i5) NAS is a wee bit ridiculous IMHO. Looking at the TVS872XT (i3, i5 and i7 releases) it always came with 10GBe (too), on the motherboard. And I got the intell that QNAP sees the TVS-h874 as the replacement for the TVS872-series. At minimum, QNAP should have included the QNAP QXG-10G1T 1x port 10GBe card (around a 100 euros end-user, probably 40 to 60 euros for QNAP themselves) for the i3 and i5 models of the TVS-h874. Because, let's be honest for a moment, only 2.5Gbe (not even 5Gbe) on the TVS-h874 is not really that revolutionary nowadays, 10GBe networking is a sanity-choice for the average user when the cabling/infrastructure can handle it. Even the lowest-spec TVS-h874 can saturate a 10GBe connection. I do believe that QNAP's choice to only include 2.5GBe (and thus not also 5GBe, let alone 10GBe) in the more recent families of QNAP's (except where they do include a PCIe 10GBe card) is a choice of a chip-set on the motherboard that easely could have accommodated a chipset that does support (at minimum) 1x 10GBe port. The QNAP's hardware would be and revolutionary and evolutionary. At the moment the newer QNAP's appear to me to sometimes take a step back in that arena, if I compare them to the older models. But that is of course my opinion.

Great review which convinced me to buy the 874 i5 to use as a Plex server. Do you have a video explaining how to turn this on via WOW and without having to buy a QWU-100? Thanks..

I cannot find one available currently anywhere including QNAP Direct. But when they are, I will definitely buy an 8 bay and it will be my 10 year NAS ( hopefully). I currently have 2 x 4 bay NAS's. The problem being that if I need more space on my Raid 5 setups is, I have to remove perfectly good drives and replace them with a a new set of larger drives. With an 8 bay, I can just add more drives. And the CPU horsepower + RAM on this model means I never have to worry about any aspirations I have being limited, within reason. Sure it may appear to be expensive on the sticker but on a per year basis, it really isn't.

Please be aware, with QuTS Hero (actually it's the ZFS which doesn't allow this) you cannot expand a RAIDZ vdev. That is, you cannot add disks to a RAID (the OpenZFS folks are working to implement this exact feature).

I need something like this. My old Synology I use for Plex needs replacing. BUT ill wait until they add Meteor lake hat has 8/10bit AV1 Encode/Decode. Yes Yes I know content is limited but I keep these things so long if I spend all this cash for a new NAS like this I def want AV1 support for future proofing. And yes I know I can add a extra GPU that does have AV1 support but would rather wait for it to be on chip.

Do your test include mounting a drive on your ram and set the transcode to occur there as opposed to your SSDs. Would love to know if that makes any difference

This sounds great but I don't want to pay $2100+ for it. That's for the i5 version BTW. I feel like I could build my own PC with the same specs for cheaper unless the software is worth the premium.
@IntoxicatedVortex
@IntoxicatedVortex Жыл бұрын
I don't think anyone is happy with that type of price tag unless they are in the direct target market for such a device. That said, when you consider the cost of a PC based NAS (with say TrueNAS) from the perspective of a physical space, energy and/or personal time cost such NAS devices can in fact be highly attractive and very "cost effective". Ultimately it comes down to what's important to you as PCs aren't designed to be "headless" so there are a lot of things a NAS owner doesn't need to worry about/allow for where a PC-NAS owner does. Value can be measured in a lot of ways.
@DavidM2002
@DavidM2002 Жыл бұрын
@@IntoxicatedVortex Ditto that. And to build a PC based NAS, you have to put the value of your own time at $0.00 per hour for both the parts accumulation, build time, and hours and hours of setup and learning.
