There is no way not to be moved by Soyang, the absurd vocal control that she has, together with the power and tuning, transforms any song as if it were her own. The is a complete singer. They're not her personal backing singers. Although this is a different TV show its the same broadcaster & the singers are attatched to the show,as with the orchestra which is why you see them at nearly all of sohyang's performances on TV,sometimes just a few singers & sometimes more like a small choir. If you only watch sohyang's performances its easy to see why anyone would think that they were part of her entourage but if you watch performances from the other artists involved you will quickly see that they too are been backed by the same backing singers. Do you think Whitney herself would approve? It'd be nice to think she was lookin in on sohyang from wherever she is, god bless her, & giving her a standing ovation. As you've just seen sohyang do a bit of the late,great, ms Houston, I recommend that you take a break from all that belting & take a look at sohyang's performance of 'i will always love you' from the 'begin again korea' series. This series is based on a small ensemble of vocalists/musicians basically 'busking' in different venues around korea & putting on 'mini gigs', nearly always outdoors. In this performance,which shows sohyang's amazing control in a very stripped back version, she is outdoors,on a dock side, its windy & she sat down,yet delivers the performance with great poise & assurance (& bucket loads of skill goes without saying) which i'm sure will blow you away. I know it's another Whitney song ( its actually a dolly parton song but whitney made it famous in the film 'the bodyguard') but its just a great example of a song been performed in contrast to the performance you've just seen, and probably showing more control but in a very different way. I hope you see why I suggested this performance for you. BTW, a little teaser for you, watch out for the saxaphone solo!!!! 🎶 🎷

I have actually heard that Sohyang has personally assembled her background singers from the students at her vocal technique classes at the South Korean university where she teaches. Someone mentioned it in a comment I read a few days back. 💘

So Hyang sings perfectly but Whitney's sometimes gritty singing and phrasing as though she has actually lived the song is what I prefer. (Like the way Whitney sings "I have nothing, Nothing, NOTHING!" --She is making declarative STATEMENTS! So Hyang just sings through it). Whitney's voice is richer, fuller and doesn't seem to scream-sing or add unnecessary embellishments although this presentation by So Hyang is much better than the one where she wears the blue dress.
