That is Avi singing overtone. One low note and a whistle tone at the same time.
@margretrosenberg4202 жыл бұрын
In Singapore, Kevin had just finished doing a demonstration with Beyonce (his cello), so he needed to put her back in the case before going on with "Aha!" The choral part at the beginning is a time filler to let Kevin get back. At 12:13 Avi sees Kevin coming back, so he begins singing his part. At 12:23 he hits his first really low note, and the *first* speaker blows out. At 12:32 the camera pans back and you can see that Scott and Mitch have moved closer to each other and to Kirstin in order to make room for Kevin. This is a fan video; taken on a smartphone. The video shows only what the fan holding the phone thought was important, so it never actually shows us Kevin, but we can still *hear* him, so we know he's there. Also, note that the quality of the sound deteriorates as the video progresses. This was not caused by a problem with the phone; it was caused by Avi. Mitch was jetlagged, so he'd compensated by drinking two Red Bulls, which was arguably one Red Bull too many. So just about the time Mitch starts singing his "Aha!" solo the caffeine and sugar cut in and Mitch goes hyperactive in his upper register. Naturally, the camera is watching Mitch. Everyone is *listening* to Mitch. But if you try and ignore Mitch you'll hear Avi, still singing low notes into his microphone, and blowing out speaker after speaker in the process. By the end of "Aha!" Avi has systematically destroyed the Star Vista's sound system. It's my favorite part of this entire performance.

You did this the right way. I always tell people they need to check out the official video first to get an idea of what the song is about...THEN watch the Singapore live version. A little behind the scenes story on the live version as I've heard it: The song previous to "Aha" was a cello solo by Kevin. During that solo, the rest of the group was backstage taking a break. Mitch was suffering from jet lag and downed two straight Red Bulls. Kevin finished his cello solo and went backstage to put the cello away as the rest of the group came back onstage to perform the gregorian opening, which explains why he isn't onstage. Kevin returns to the stage (not seen on camera) just as Avi hits that low note and does the first damage to the theater's sound system! Then Mitch's Red Bulls kick in and he proceeds to go completely insane while Avi continues to joyously shred the sound system in the background! And thus the live performance than most Pentaholics consider to be the group's all-time best...and it apparently was only captured on this fan video!

You, sir, have an excellent ear. I don't think I've encountered another Reactor who really understood the insane musical intricacy of this arrangement: all the quick interlocking off-the-beat stuff. Good on you for pointing it out and demonstrating. It must be very hard to keep synchronized in performance, and all the more credit to PTX for (I'm told) almost always including it in their concerts over the years. Also an A+ to you for recognizing Avi's overtone singing (I think the term you were searching for was "overtone series"), which so many commentators (even the Sing-Off judges) seem to miss, partly because it seems so impossible that a bass in an a cappella band can do that. That's something Avi is able to do -- there are videos devoted to him demonstrating it for audiences if you're curious.

If you notice at the beginning there's a whole space between Kirstie and Mitch. The chorale part was written because Kevin was putting away his cello away. When the part gets to Avi you can see real quickly Mitch moving over and for the song The Space Between Mitch and Kristen is smaller. The camera just did not pick up Kevin who's next to Scott remember that this was filmed off of someone's phone and since it's Mitch singing the whole song that's where the camera stayed. Great reaction I love when people do the studio and then the live. Avi wrote this piece choral music because he is a classically trained singer in Opera. Fun fact: when Kevin join Pentatonix he did not know he could sing. Avi taught him how to sing.
@rlhcat76623 жыл бұрын
FYI, Avi did not write this piece. It is a well known Latin piece for classical choral groups. He did bring it to the group, because his prior group had sung it, and they needed something to sing while Kevin was putting his cello away.

Great reaction!! 😊 This is old school PTX.... I really enjoy this one! Avi's overtone singing is a great addition to the overall arrangement and feel of the song and Mitch is almost supernatural, especially for a guy! Amazing really! Though I almost feel physical pain for my own vocal chords whenever I hear people singing that high. I don't tend to enjoy those types of registers much for that reason. However, I feel that it goes well with the song in this case, even if the live version is almost too much for me. These guys are all very talented and really know how to use their talent well. Kevin was right there on stage for all of Aha! During the chorale piece (brought to them by Avi) there is a big space between Mitch & Kirstie, where Kevin sat playing cello for the prior song. During Avi's solo, Mitch moved to center stage, Scott followed and Kevin took Scott's place at far right. Unfortunately, the person taking this video never showed the whole stage again, but this performance would be so different without Kevin's crazy beats and rattles and whooshes.

@@QofyReacts sure did. Definitely enjoyed it, watching your mind explode. Loved that you did both videos in one. Not to mention that you worked with the original artist. Wonder what they think of these? Yes, Avi did do that whistle, there is another video of him doing lion sleeps tonight like that.

I say something every time I see people request it! (And others do too) But I think sometimes people don't remember when they do get around to the video.

@@QofyReacts it drives us crazy to be screaming at the screen. And by the way in case you haven't answered yet what is that high note that Mitch does in that song. Also the entire video, I and I'm sure lots of others were talking to the screen saying, "Just wait" over and over again. I've heard that when Mitch goes down to the floor avi blows the speaker's out. I also sent you a question on DM.

Avi did the overtone singing!! And you got a keen sense of hearing, 🤩👌🏻 unbelievable!!! You can search for Avi’s overtone singing and you’ll get an idea. And Mitch........ 😶

LOVE LOVE LOVE your reaction. This is such an incredible sweet spot. You get so drawn in and in trans by Mitch you have a hard time noticing the other parts. Avi's bass in the live version is insane and the other vocals and Kevin is there on the far right by Mitch just sucks you in.

Since the focus of this reaction was Mitch I think it was appropriate that you focused on Mitch instead of every other member. It definitely was not intended to be the Avi show when it's headlined as a study of Mitch Grassi. If the headline was Avi Kaplan vocals I would expect it to be about Avi! No harm, no foul! excellent reaction! Kevin was putting away his cello in the beginning. He hopped up on the stage beside Scott off camera before the song began.

Maschelle Mashburn The focus of the reaction is on the song. If Scott did something exciting I would repeat it as many as I wanted. Thanks for your comment but I don’t react to anyone’s expectations other than mine

@@QofyReacts oh my bad! I could have sworn I heard you say something about focusing on Mitch Grassi vocals in the beginning but I have heard wrong before! It is absolutely your channel and your reactions are absolutely yours as they should be. 😊 I should have specified that my comment was because I saw a lot of comments saying that you didn't talk about Avi enough. I was under the impression that people were displeased that you talked about Mitch. I was simply saying you have the right to react to the videos the way you wanted to. But I get the impression that you thought I was insulting you or telling you how to react to a video? I apologize for any misunderstanding.

@@mecfstraveler See now, this is a civilised conversation. Both sides respectful of the other to come to an understanding. This makes me almost wish I was on twitter so I could retweet it to Donald Trump to show him how it's done.

You’re right, that overtone Sound is from Avi. He gave a first example of it on one of the episodes from the sing off. Kevin was setting up his cello on the next stage. Also meant to tell you for your next bass battle there is a video of Tim and Avi destroying speakers live on stage with their low notes.

Yes, it is Avi doing the overtone singing. He did it in a couple of their Sing-Off songs. One of the judges thought it was Kevin. There's a video online of him doing it. Kevin was missing at the beginning because he was putting away his cello from the previous song, and then he is off the screen to the side but there.
