So the density is not huge. However, I listened to Ford ceo who explained that the iron batteries are with less energy density but because they are safe, OEM do not need additional equipment so the battery as a whole pack is lighter and the car goes further. If this is the case here then slight improvement on energy density over li ion combined with no additional safety equipment means the cars will have measurable more range. Is that correct?
@mikael32012 ай бұрын
You talk about current LFP batteries on the market, I think this tech is supposed to beat LFP when it comes to density 🤔🤷🏻 Try to look up the weight for a typical LFP battery station, they are heavy, and then compare with the density they show here.
@poxer12 ай бұрын
@@mikael3201 100% true. The density they show beats lithium ion batteries as well, but by much. But this does not mean the tech isn't good. If it allows for weight to be reduced as well as upping the density slightly, this means your car will go further. So, this combined with less temperature volatility means it will go further in winter as well. I hope the tech works and we start seeing those batteries in a couple of years
How interesting this notoriously complex problem seems to be approaching the production-ready home-stretch at the same time machine learning has matured to a point it can accelerate the QS learning process. And what an ideal use case for machine learning in driving final outcomes in a domain where so much information has been gathered but the humans have yet to see the final picture clearly. It would seem somehow incredibly fitting if the first technological innovation driven directly by AI was in a field as fully practical and based in physical reality as chemical energy storage.

Tesla seems to be interested in acquiring QuantumScape and is currently waiting for the test results of the B-samples. Apparently, the proximity of the two companies is also a key factor in these takeover plans. This would be a well-deserved quantum leap for the company! I’m really excited about this time.
@conjoguam25 күн бұрын
Acquiring quantumscape by Tesla or any company would be impossible. How will then buyer value the company given the applications it can support? The best course for auto OEMS including tesla will be too work with quantumscape to set up a manufacturing joint venture or license the tech.

What happened to our QS stock?
@paulsprunken2 ай бұрын
at 1:22 Tim speaks of a barrier between anode and cathode; but the QS idea is to produce an anode free battery; what am I not grasping here? In the earnings release, the company stated, "[T]o the best of our knowledge, these cells are the first anode-free solid-state lithium-metal cell design ever produced for automotive applications."
@DylanFkinGuenther2 ай бұрын
No battery can be anode free because thats how they function, quantumscapes battery removes the material needed in the anode so when charged it swells instead this is part of the reason they can get higher energy density than lithium ion. The barrier or seperator is what enables this. Less materials for a better battery
@diarmuid622 ай бұрын
From what I understand is that yes QS is manufactured anode free but when charged it forms a anode.
@bryanpeterson46432 ай бұрын
The cell consists of a pure lithium anode that is formed on the first time it is charged from the lithium stored in the cathode. Lithium ion cells use a porous separator that allows an electrolyte to flood the entire cell and a host material in the anode to store the lithium, like graphite or now, silicon. QS eliminates both of those things .

can someone with a more technical knowledge explain or interpet the specs and do a comparison to a modern day ev to see what these batteries would meen ? like a car with 50 kwm batteri, let say it weighs 2 000 kg and gos maybe 400 km. what would this batterie do to a car like that?
@DylanFkinGuenther2 ай бұрын
An improvement on range of 50% but you can trade that for a smaller battery to save weight as well. With a 12 minute 10-80%charge rate (that doesnt harm the battery) you wont need as much range. Equally as important is how much safer this will be in regards to fire risk

PowerCO are licensed to use quantumscape technology and are building 3 factorys to manufacturer but quantumscape announced a while a go that they plan to manufacturer themselves too not just license which is a much longer route to profitably and riser one but would be more financially rewarding if they succeed. I hope QS has CTP (cell to pack) technology. To be honest, the energy density of individual cells is not as impressive compared to batteries from other competing ASSB companies. I hope QS's batteries simplify battery packs with temperature stability and operating conditions that surpass those of competitors. Separately, congratulations on the B-sample. I hope that QS will achieve meaningful success in the ESS field as well.
@famljw3095Ай бұрын
Who are Quantumscape's competitors with more impressive technology? I'm genuinely curious. Thank you.
@류형선Ай бұрын
@ For most sulfide all-solid-state batteries, the energy density is higher than QS. For example, Samsung SDI has found a way to suppress dendrites through carbon silver coating (but it doesn't seem to be as perfect as QS). They are also exploring mass production methods through a roll-to-roll process. I believe QS is a leader in battery technology, but I hope that QS dominates the battery market before lithium sulfide becomes cheap enough.

@@류형선 Thank you for your thoughts. I did a lot of research today and now realize how intense the competition is. It seems as though auto manufacturers are hedging their bets with the various developers, but they will be happy to do business with whoever is able to mass produce. My first impression has me excited about QS, but I also want to invest in other market leaders in case they come to market first. Thank you again. Take care.

@@iamsamhurdphotography He's missing what exactly? The best QS can offer whatever metric you choose is not above 30% improvement to already existing batteries. And that's if they can produce them at scale ever, and if that ever happens, it's years away, and if it's also cost effective. Lots of IFs, as you see... They can only show 'cells', not 'packs', because they can't produce enough separators.
