"Québec: A discourse on Nations" is a three-part documentary series exploring the concept of nationhood through the example of the Canadian province of Québec. In these videos we aim to explore the many phases and evolutions of French Canadian identity, while also exploring the history of Canada with a focus on this region of the country.
In this first episode we explore the very origins of this story -- from its very origins. Going from the arrival of the Early First Nations to the aftermath of the British Conquest, looking through the history of New France: The French North American colony, and the reason why there are French people in Canada in the first place. Our objective with this video will be to lay out a comprehensive background to then proceed with the developments of the XIXth century.

As an Eastern European I have no idea about how colonialism works and this subject was handed extremely well, not only giving great explanation about the history of this region of North America, but also showing how it connected to the overall French-British rivalry and the European economy as a whole. The delivery is perfect, small memes pique interests while not being too flashy. Came from Kraut, not disappointed, you gained a fan.

@@civilengineer3349 Hmm well yeah, what Russia did in Siberia and Central Asia was very much a colonial expansion. You can argue Teutonic expansion into Prussia and Livonia would be one as well, although it hadn't been supervised by a large colonial empire as much as it has been an effort made by a greatly autonomous organization which, save for owning few possessions in mainland Germany, was centrally located in the area it expanded in, so it does not necessarily hit my idea of what colonialism is. I was mostly referring to the western style colonialism deeply linked with overseas expansion, something I do not know much about. I overlooked this since I was mostly having in mind the region East of the iron curtain as a whole.

@@carlwest5936 thats not what I asked. There was also never more than a 100 thousand native Americans at once in quebec until recently. Also the only god damn war I can think of is the huron/iroquois war and the side that the french sided with lost heavily to the iroquois who were allied with the British and they completely destroyed the huron civilization. Also please point me to these mass graves, I know of the one we found in bc, but I cant find any in Quebec specifically. The agressive policies of assimilation were passed in the late 18 hundreds when quebec wasnt in charge of anything. McDonald and the government of united canada before 1867 are the ones who made these laws. Quebec is not without its fault or blame when it comes to the native, but you dont seem to care about what actually happened.

Mr West, it is an undeniable historic fact that the French colonists that settled in the Saint Laurence valley where the ONLY Europeans to be formally invited to do so (at the Great Tabagie Alliance of 1603 signed in Tadoussac with the native Algonkian tribes that occupied what is now Quebec at the time). The French occupation of the Saint Laurence valley was accomplished without war, enslavement or genocide of the local population. The only war French settlers fought were against the Iroquois Confederation of Upstate New York who were at war with France's native allies. The forceful removal of territories, the establishment of reservations and the institution of the Indian laws as well as of the Boarding schools were done under British and Canadian rule, not by the Quebecois. Might I also remind you that Quebekers also suffered from the yoke of the Catholic Church whose members also raped, abused and killed many of its orphans and institutionalized citizens throughout the 19th and first half of the 20th Century? Quebekers have to answer for abandoning their native allies and letting their religious and political elites play the game of the anglo economic and colonial establishment that wanted to eradicate native culture if not the natives themselves. John A MacDonald wanted to elimitate "the savages" as he called them (as he also wanted to elimitate French Canadians living outside of Quebec), for they were a foil in his ideal of a British North America. To do so, he used all the tools at his disposal including the Catholic Church, all too willing to play its part in exange for having its power over French Canada maintained... As for modern events, Quebec has, as the rest of Canadian Provinces, severely neglected to defend the rights and living conditions of its First Nations for economic and political reasons: the mining, loging & energy lobbys doing their best from BC to Atlantic Canada to step on Native Lands and exploit them for their own benefit...

Bonjour NomadStar! I am a Quebecer of french descent and I just stumbled on your channel after someone put your clip on a Quebec History group (yah, I'm historian)... I must say, after 4 minutes, I knew this was already a much better clip than what I usually see on my nation/province... Just the titles of chapters and the music show that this is very well researched... I appreciate your effort very much and look forward to see more! (although, at 49:05, we were not Quebecers, but still "canadiens". Quebecers/Québécois doesn't happen before the 1960s.) I would suggest a deeper dig into the contemporary realities of the First nations (kudos btw on the intro, using their flags... an anachronism easily forgivable but also real names and cultural elements), as it would add a layer of analysis to your concept of "nation", but it would probably be better served by a clip on (de)colonization, the laws abiding native people around the world and the challenges it represents, both for these nations and these states... Keep up this great work! Subscribed already. :)

I think your approach to the theme of the video was wonderful, as well as the condensed information and the great drawings truly make this video an enjoyable experience. I can't wait for the second and third parts of this video to come out! I just finished reading a book about New France called "Une breve historie des peuples de la Nouvelle-France" and this video was a great complement to this book I just read, such an insightful video! Thank you very much. I personally do consider French Canadians to be Latin Americans, because they are culturally and linguistically descended form the French, and I think they are such an interesting people, being the most isolated and septentrional Latins. Hispanic America and Brazil are connected to each other, the Latin countries of Europe border each other, but Québec and Acadia are far away in the north, disconnected from everything, surrounded by completely different cultures, which I find surprising to say the least. This is why I've always been interested in learning about French Canadians, a group of people who I consider to be at least part of the same wider cultural group as I do, who have also managed to retain their culture, while also living in one of the harshest places in the American continent due to the weather, and despite being basically isolated from other Latin nations since 1763.

Nice, this is crazy well informed! I grew up in the Maritimes and was given a french education, but the focus was mostly on Acadians (which I should mention the deportation was not just Nova Scotia but PEI, New Brunswick and Maine as well). So when I attended school in Montreal, it just really bothered me how the Quebec students had absolutely no idea about the history of Acadia, only Quebec and thats it. I understand you're going to be focusing mainly on Quebec because it is a fascinating history; please also acknowledge the struggles of French communities outside of Quebec; how the Acadians in the Maritimes still exist and try to preserve their culture. Quebec does have a unique culture but that culture is also shared with other french communities in Canada that are very often ignored or overlooked sadly. I'm sure your future videos will cover tons more, and this is a great start! Good job :)

Grew up in Quebec- Quebec has swung a bit far in the Nationalism direction where its ironically become very "American" in the sense of its obsession with being monolingual and it being hyper-focused on itself. Not all Quebecois are like this, but the Quebec government and the nationalist types are for sure.

@@m.a.118 mostly a response to the unwillingness of the RoC to acknowledge and maintain French services. Government establishes French as sole langage officially but most people under 30 speak english in the big cities. Separatism is mostly a story pf the past with older generation clinging onto it because they lived through the authoritarian anglo rule and kept alive in schools by those older generation teachers trying to keep it alive by feeding it to their students. It is merely a threat kept alive to keep the balance of power with the RoC with few people actually wanting secession and most people wanting a independent state in a bigger state like it is today.
@m.a.118
@m.a.118 3 жыл бұрын
@@jeanjacques9365 I find that's interesting. Firstly, on the note of the RoC being unwilling to accomodate French services (ex. Manitoba and Ontario school acts in the 19th and early 20th century) that is unjust, but with the "papier blue" part of education reform Loi 101 and now the CAQ extending it to CEGEPs with Bill 96 (and Bill 21 too), Quebec doesn't have a moral leg to stand on since it's behaving in similar ways to the Anglos of old. Secondly, I don't buy the "Anglo Authoritarian" narrative entirely. Were Francophones disadvantaged in pre-Revolution Tranquille Quebec? Sure. But "Anglo authoritarianism", even though plenty of francophones ran in parliament pre-1960... that was a small part of that. That Catholic church kept Francophones submissive supporting the status quo, fellow Francophones like Duplessis and (Henri) Bourassa who were traditionalists and kept Quebec backwards... But nono... its the big bad Anglos that were to blame? Lol come on. 😆

Fantastic video dude, not many acknowledge the amazing history of Canada, especially the New France period! I just wanted to point out as an Acadian, that the colony of Acadia was larger than Nova Scotia today, it stretched all the way to the Kennebec River in the American state of Maine and even parts of current day Quebec, such as Gaspe and the Magdalen Islands. After the Treaty of Utrecht the Acadians were split between the British Nova Scotia and the French Acadia, which included the lands I mentioned above as well as the current provinces of New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island and the island of Cape Breton. The Acadians were deported from all of these lands except for the roughly 20% who avoided deportation and some were allowed back later, though where in the old Acadia was limited. The whole event is quite interesting to read about, it wasn't just a simple load everyone on ships and send them off, it lasted almost a decade and saw Acadian militias and local natives working together, slowly being pushed back and fighting just to survive. Maybe after Chapter II, which I'm guessing will go over Quebec itself, you'll cover the Acadian situation more closely? ;) Anyway, channel is off to a great start, keep up the amazing work!

@@RavignonCh Great video! Since I grew up in the Eastern Townships of Québec, I was wondering if you were going to cover the later history of the Eastern Townships (ETs)? And how the people here are different from French Quebecers? That is the ETs were settled by Americans, then the English came and only after, the French Quebecers migrated in search of employment (hence why so many towns and villages here have English, Scotch and Irish names). But because of the pressure from the French Government, our biggest city, Sherbrooke, has become overwhelmingly French speaking (about 90%). And how the people in the ETs were forced to suppress their American and English culture and language. Of course, it would not be complete without mentioning the Abenaki.

Surprising as it sounds I don't think it made much sense at the time. Even if France kept Canada, the Thirteen Colonies would've still been there, and they would have continued to be a geopolitical threat to New France. At the time, the island seemed more profitable and manageable, whereas the North, big as it was, was looked at in the same way Texas used to be looked at before people knew there was oil in there. They did miss out in a way, but there were also lots of manageability issues on the way -- which we'll discuss in part II :)

As much as I don't agree with the trade because of all of the ramifications it had, it made perfect sense. France was in no way capable of defending Canada from Britain if they were to fight, so rather than to lose it in a war, Louis XV decided to use it as a leverage to gain something else, because he knew that Britain would get it sooner or later and investing in naval power to match Britain was a non option since France had to be involved in continental affairs and there was no unlimited funds even if it was extremely rich
