I have a protocol when I change the oil on multi engine outboard boats is as fellows; Remove cowlings from all engines. Start on left engine, drain oil, change filter, refill, replace cowling. Rinse and repeat on next engines. I do it this way, so I never forget too refill an engine. I know that the cowling only goes back on when that engine is _finished._ I won't work on multiple engines at once. I learned that lesson by watching a buddy mess up and fry a $30,000 outboard. Did exactly what you did in this video. Drained them all, then refilled them all in one swoop. I'm not trying too tell you what to do. Hell, I ain't even making a suggestion to you. I'm just telling what works for me, so I can always be confident I'm not about to cook somebody's very expensive piece of machinery.

Definitely a good protocol to follow. Fortunately We haven’t had anything like that happen but I’d be heartbroken if we did.

Nice to see someone taking a little pride looking after their possessions. Down the line will pay dividends if you ever sell it on again. Goes to show it ain’t all sunshine and swords. When you steam out on your charters it would be interesting to hear some snippets and chronicling along the way of your journey as a charter skipper. How you started out, who inspired you, the learning curve and mistakes along the way. The prospecting for marks and the good and bad times in chartering getting to where you’re at today. Every skipper I’ve ever known always had some tales to tell, fascinating natural events they’ve witnessed over the years at sea and some scary experiences.

Nice, whenever doing maintenance on your motors you should spray them down with corrosion X...you can get it at most marine stores and it has a good film that stays on and works well. It is great on electrical connectors, it lubricates, and prevents rust and corrosion of clamps and other hardware. I spray my whole motors with it religiously and it has really helped them. I have twin DF225 Suzuki's and they still look, sound and work great.

I feel like on a boat with that many motors they should make a single external oil tank that runs to all the engines to make oil changes alot easier
@paulmorrow83725 жыл бұрын
One of the reason for multiple motors is redundancy. If that tank were to crack or a line were to break you would have all engines inoperable.

I’d look at a slightly stronger pump with a longer hose so you can leave the bucket on the dock. Possibly a small ball valve near the end to stop oil flowing back to make a mess. With 4 engines I’d also have a system to double check everything so you don’t start one up empty. I knew a guy did an install on a pair of inboards after 5 days start one completely empty of oil. Pull the keys put them on the dash and don’t put them in until you check all 4 dipsticks one last time and count 4 filters.
@robgrundwald5 жыл бұрын
If you gotta do the gear (lower unit) oil at the same interval, seems like it would be easier to do at the same time during a haul out and let them drain instead of that pump contraption.
@StanzFam5 жыл бұрын
If you can plan it right that would be best but it’s not always easy to get an appointment for a quick haul out at the yard to do lower units (and/or main oil), so we just have to do it when we have time. Unfortunately the yard will cancel if they have a bigger job coming in and don’t want you tying up their lift for an hour or two
@makersmark885 жыл бұрын
Could you use an old bulge pump to pump out the oil? We always pull the boat out and drain the oil but as you can imagine it’s messy that way.

I would rather knock the salt off then let it sit on there. Little bit of salt always finds its way under the cowling somehow, especially if it’s been rough. I’ve never had an issue with electrical connections from spraying a little fresh water around the motor I try not to soak it by any means.

Boat mechanics are about $125 per hour plus parts you’d probably pay for 2 hours labor, filters are $13 each on Amazon let’s say $50, oil is $36 per gallon need 5 gallons 36X5= $180. So a mechanic would be about $250 labor, $50 in filters $180 in oil = $480 + a can of spray, rubber gloves and tax is $500. He buys oil by the drum and filters by the box so he saves a little there. You can’t make money chartering not saving money on things like this, like he said people wonder why chartering a boat cost so much.
