Bears have an amazing body function called ‘delayed implantation’ of fertilized eggs; after mating, the fertilized eggs don’t implant right away, and the female goes back to eating as many calories as she can, ahead of hibernation. Then, when she’s asleep, her body decides how many cubs she can handle nutritionally, and, based on what she weighed when she entered hibernation, that number of eggs finally implant. Conversely, if the female doesn’t have the calories to sustain even one baby, none of the eggs implant! So Quad Mom must have had a huge caloric intake prior to giving birth to those four cubs!

Good question! She had those cubs in 2010. I haven't seen her in at least 5 years but other people I know have. She has to be at least 20 by now, maybe even older.

Does anyone know if Quadmom took all 4 to den that first year they were born? This is a great video!
@JudyLehmbergEpicNature3 жыл бұрын
I can’t say the following with 100% accuracy but from everything I heard she only took 2 to den. I never heard of any concrete sightings though. I guess you know about 399 and her 4 in the Tetons in 2020?

@@JudyLehmbergEpicNature Oh, Yes!! I've been following 399 and her coy's since May. It has been so fascinating following along on their journey this year. It made 2020 more bearable and one filled with hope. I know that 399 took all of her 4 coy's to den on New Years Day. I'm hoping and praying that all 5 come out in the Spring. I had told one of my friends I'd heard someone say that 399 has been the only recorded Grizzly Sow in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem that has taken all 4 coy's to den. My friend said a Yellowstone Sow had also done the same thing and he referred to her as Quad Mom in Yellowstone National Park. So, I researched and found you! I can't wait to learn more from you. :)

@@ssdawn2002 I know there are other grizzlies in the greater Yellowstone Ecosystem who have had 4 COY. It is pretty rare. I don’t know anything about how many denned with all 4. You need to become friends with the bear management people in Yellowstone.
