For all those wondering why you are getting it wrong when you use kinematics instead of the vertex formula is because this cirumstance is not happening on Earth, and therefore, we have a different acceleration due to gravity. Because the acceleration due to gravity on earth is 32 ft/sec^2 and the given acceleration due to gravity is -4 ft/sec^2 we need to divide 32 by 4 to find the acceleration used in the kinematics.
