Hi Zach, You are a legend mate, I an an Amputee from New Zealand and having a Hand Controlled Vehicle Built , it’s a VW Transporter T6 where I will drive through the rear doors and up to the drive position m by swapping the seats my wife or daughters can drive the vehicle as normal.. I don’t consider myself Disabled, just ‘just normal, with issues’ lol You are amazing to go through your system to get into the drive position, more power to you, Cheers mate, Robin

Great job on the video. Please continue to create these videos and share your experiences and the way that you perform daily tasks. You guys are a good team. You will help so many people learn to live a full life by showing them what is possible. I am a 30 years post injury C5/C6 quad. I learned so much in the beginning by observing others that were around me with similar limitations, copied them, and then began to adapt to work best for me. It would have been awesome to have your collection of videos to learn from. Keep up the great work and loving life! Rob

Thank you Zach for posting this video. I have muscular dystrophy and I recently became wheelchair bound full time and not being able to drive has been making me crazy. So I got all the money together that I could and I've picked out a van and now all I have to do is decide which hand controls would be best for me so it helps to see how others drive. I took my first driving lesson today and let's just say I'm going to need more lessons before I can go out on my own. I didn't think it would be that difficult, but it's harder than it seems to drive smoothly. On a personal note, I admire your determination and patience when dealing with all the difficulties just getting situated in the driver's seat. Bless you and keep on trucking!

You are doing a great job by getting out. I was wounded and lost my left leg above the knee and spent several years in a wheelchair until I decided to amputate.after several infections and surgeries.So, I cannot even imagine what you are going through. My girlfriend is an absolute Angel and it sounds like you have one also. You should really do something about the gap between the seats so you do not get hurt.Take care fellow! Oh, what are you taking in school? Thanks for the great information!

OMG I don't know much about this topic or about cars in general, but is there any way that you can have that passenger seat removed? It looks like it was a struggle getting past it. Thank you for your video. Your video is very informative, and its opened my eyes to how someone with disabilities daily life would be like. I really can appreciate the hard work you put into learning to drive. Thank you so much for educating me!

Anthony Price Thanks, man. Vocational Rehabilitation is a government program in Missouri who assist people with disabilities go to school and find jobs. They helped pay for the adaptions on my van. I would search if there is a program like that in your state. Finding resources isn’t easy, but they’re out there.

Hey Zach, I really like your video. I am a c5 recovered to c6-7. I too am tall 6’2 so to finally see another quad around my size being independent is awesome. What is that chest strap that you have? I would like to eliminate my leaning on turns?
@zhandy0206 жыл бұрын
marcos garcia Great to hear that you’re driving. I honestly don’t know what the strap is actually called. Do you have your own vehicle? My rehab counselor helped me pick out what I needed. I bet it’s just called chest strap lol. But it’s important to have one for sure so you’re stable and don’t lose balance%

As a C-5/6 myself. What brand of hand controls are those? I prefer to just eazy lock my chair in divers seat rather than transfer. I don't transfer well. I'm surprised you don't use elbow controls. They have pins for gas & brake. It may make it easier. I was taught to never take my hand off the gas & brake while driving. Does your van have auto brakes?
@zhandy0207 жыл бұрын
Legion1937 I really couldn't tell you the brand. When I did my driver training and evaluation he basically told me everything he thought I needed. So, I just went with his recommendations. And I went with the transfer seat just so I could take my manual chair if needed. But I can only take that chair when someone can help me. And no, no auto brakes.

@zhandy0207 жыл бұрын
+Lia Babyyaah Vocational rehab helps pay for the expensive part which is the conversation and everything. But I had to pay for the van cost minus that. So, I believe my end was around like 13 some odd thousand and Voc Rehab paid around 32-34 grand I believe.

Where can i buy those hand controls, and how much did they cost?
@zhandy0207 жыл бұрын
+legitsrs I got my van and everything from United Access which is a country wide company I'm pretty sure. You can either buy an already accessible van or have modifications done to one you own. If you already have a van that is wheelchair accessible the modifications will be cheaper. You need to research for any resources available in your state to help you pay for it unless you have the money. Vocational Rehab covered the conversion costs for the van I bought, which was around 30 grand just for the conversion part. It costs around 20-30 to get a van converted from scratch usually. I bought an already converted van and they just modified it a bit to what I needed, and the van was like 15,000 that I bought and am paying for.

is it posible to mount hand controls on a small car like toyota wigo or altis? and also what do you call that hand colntrol model where you push down to accelerate and push forward to brake? all i see is the pussh and pull option. thanks :)
@zhandy0207 жыл бұрын
+bahug igit yes, it is possible. Paraplegics have more function and an easier time transferring in and out of cars so they typically need less work done. But, I know of quads that drive cars too. And I can't remember the name of the option I have on the brake/gas off the top of my head but I can try to look it up.
@beertuwalmyuziek95177 жыл бұрын
how much did you spend for the controls? hehe
@zhandy0207 жыл бұрын
bahug igit I really don't remember how much they were because a state government program called Vocational Rehab paid for the adaptations...I'm sure you can google it though. Part of the cost is going to be the installation as well.

I live in Missouri so I’m not sure all the states United Access is located in? If you find a company that sells accessible vehicles I’m sure they could tell you though.
