I like the shape of the fedora that Ginger Rogers wears in “Hollywood on Parade 1932.” The crown is high and full with a center crease. From the side it almost looks like the crown is the opposite of tapered-like it flares at the top ever so slightly. The ribbon is wide and the brim (like many early to mid 1930’s hats) isn’t as wide as the later 30’s and 1940’s. I can get open crown hats and get pretty close to this earlier 1930’s look but the brims on most open crown hats today are a bit wider.

Kev recently just went over this with me in a very kind and in depth email response. Now we're all privy to a longer video going over crown height stuff! Too cool and so appreciated. I love the longer content! You rule, KTG! Btw, for me, high, boxy C crown preferred.

Loved the video- the Skypiece is still my favorite, it fits like a glove & looks amazing. Great to see Frank running things in the background, & hope the family is doing well- looking forward to buying my next KTG soon!

Glad you enjoyed it, Frank is one of those skinny,spoiled Hollywood stars now, he thinks he’s the center of the universe. Now he thinks he’s gonna be film star, He wasn’t making videos for the last few months! Why?.. because he went to the Catskills to try and talk up Mike Tyson at his training camp.. Frank is convinced that he was destined to play Mike Tyson in a biographical Film about his life. We finally got Frank to sign a deal for a thanksgiving and Xmas video, a two video deal. That’s who we’re dealing with these days.

As a new hat wearer, I totally get what you're saying about taller crowns. Going from a Stratoliner to an Indiana Joes style fedora will definitely take some getting used to....But it's such a cool look!

I'm just starting my hat journey! Your channel has been a godsend. I've been considering some Stettson Pinnacle fedoras I've come across in person at a local hat store in Houston.

I’m finding that factory-creased hats should be left as-is. If I don’t like it, I buy another. Or get used to it. If I mess with the front (with steam), the side view loses its pizazz. Or go custom, but I’ve developed a fear of custom hats, I tried it twice, what comes out is never exactly what I had in mind. And of course it can’t be exchanged. Of course, I’m one of those eccentrics that notices the slightest nuance that nobody else cares about. I will measure two hats-same model-I get the identical measurements between the two-and yet one looks far better to me than the other. It’s a disease. Sorry for rambling. This was an especially informative video, thank you.

G'day Kevin from the land down under. Would it be correct or incorrect to say that the Fedora's from the 1930's Crown and Brim's got shorter as the progressed into the future ? I know that it was about 2-3 months since I last wrote a message....As l have been running around collecting other Art Deco Period Men's accessories ....eg Coat long Bilfold Vintage Style Double Breasted Waistcoat etc etc. I believe that I informed that I like a 5" inch once at has been lowered in an open crown with a 2" Grosgrain ribbon.. like l believe that they were in the 1930's - 40's....l think that I have heard the term baggy top, without that Pyramid look when given the centre crease ! A preference like that of Tom Hanks in the movie " The Road to Prediction" P.S. l requested joining your Facebook Page only a couple of days ago.

If one had the opportunity to go to Madrid and Barcelona say...next week... and interested in buying a hat there, which hat shops would you recommend? I really don't feel like taking advice from Yelp or similar sites, but a pro.

Enjoying these immensely, and learning every day. Hoping you’ll cover replacing grosgrain ribbons at some point, as I’m restoring an old Dynafelt. And glad to see that you’re doing so well! Sometimes unexpected changes wake us up a bit just when we needed it. Keep it up!

Thank you I won’t be doing that particular tutorial, I’m just too slow and sloppy at it. I’d rather pay the $25 bucks and let someone else do it. My eyes are pretty bad and my sewing skills are just rushed, sloppy.. I’m not a clean hand sewer Or at least nothing u want to 😂copy,

Thanks for the nice email, I think there’s a lot of people who make hats on KZbin and instagram making a ribbon you’ll need a steam iron, needle thread and thimble, it’s easier to make it on a straight side, rather than a tapered hat. Watch videos ! You’ll learn it yourself just watching KZbin vidz
@rene-davidduplessis876621 күн бұрын
Yep, it’s the taper that’s getting me. ;) The sewing I can handle. My next thought was to sew it so the bottom edge is tightish around an inch up from the brim, and then steam the grosgrain and slip it down while it’s pliable. But I’ll admit, I haven’t researched it much. ;)
@KTGHATS21 күн бұрын
There’s a word for the process, I forgot the term, you have to pull the ribbon sort of diagonally, at a knifes edge across the edge of your iron to stretch one side of the ribbon, tapering it.. you pull it across and upwards at the same time, against the edge of the steam iron.. so there’s no gap on the top/tapered side of the band. I don’t even know the term for it, I’m sure someone will chime in. I’ve seen it done 100’s of times and I’ve faked it once or twice, when I jury rigged on a couple of bands, I pulled it one way, tried it, Pull it another way, you have to read the shape of the crown a little, decide how much to taper it. In the end, if there’s any tiny gaps, you can wet the ribbon and it’ll shrink when it dries, tighten the gaps. You’ll find that most hatters learned this stuff by themselves, so you’ll find that they aren’t that quick to share their knowledge.When you’re a working hatter, you get dozens of people visiting,every day another smiling, eager young person would try chatting up the hatter at JJs while he was working..asking questions and asking for tips.. So many people would visit, one after another, sometimes they would take each others numbers, the local college will bring in an entire class (uninvited) to watch a hatter working at his job. Meanwhile he had repairs to do, hats to make and actual customers waiting to speak to him. It’s not always easy to ask hatters for tips, and not always appropriate to ask them to share trade secrets if you’re in the same field. Obviously, I love to share information, I’m not that way, but unfortunately.. I am also not a hat maker. ..you’ll find that the knowledge is out there, you can go to the library and learn it, no kidding. All the info you need is in the NYC public library,or binge watch videos. You can watch a lady making bridal hats with flowers and feathers, they use the same technique for making bows. Buying quality ribbon is essential. The cheap stuff won’t work.

I appreciate the time taken and insight, and hope I didn’t come off as some kind of freeloader or poacher. I’m not much of a risk in that regard: I’m not a budding young craftsman: just a guy who’s been around enough to appreciate good things and who has the time to figure out how to keep them ticking. Next project is an old Iver-Johnson. ;) Thanks again!
