Kevin you are the best. I’ve learned so much about hats from you over the years and wish we had anything close to your knowledgeability in our local hat store. They mainly sell black hats with a sad diversity and are quite pretentious and seem to look down on all customers who aren’t waiting a suit or are 100 years old. They also don’t service hats (they wanted 100euros for a hat band change and said it would take about a month!) and seem to have little to no knowledge about hats or their history and are nowhere near as passionate about hats as you are. The place you work sounds great and they are lucky to have you. Now, don’t let this go to your hat, but you are an inspiration. Keep on being you.

Hi Kevin, just thought you might like to know, I started watching your videos on line several months ago. You are the reason I started buying hats from JJ’S! I now have some very nice hats, among my favorites at this point in time are the wide brim Natural and the Wiskey Valencia, just two of many. It all started with you Kevin, love your videos!! Thanks Ed Miller 😊

Wow! Thx Ed!!! I'm happy u like them! U got such good stuff, the Valencia Is the ultimate! These kinda comments mean so much to me! 😎 if u care to post a comment on JJ's Yelp or Google review page, (my boss will actually read that)😉I'm not sure if she knows how much I promote JJs while I'm home on quarrantine ,but I'd love her to see this! If u have a moment, that'd mean a lot to me🥰 thanks for taking the time to tell me That was nice 😁

Hello I had a question what is the difference between a wool hat and a cloth hat I just bought a wool hat and a cloth hat are cloth hats good
@KTGHATS
@KTGHATS 3 жыл бұрын
Wool is usually for fall and winter, it's usually felt. When u talk about a cloth hat it's usually not felt, it's cotton,linen, canvas,or something other than felt...and usually a spring,summer or rain hat. They're made differently, from prices of fabric sewn together ,like the way they make clothing. wool felt hats are made from one peice of felt,shoes over a mold,called a hat block.theyre made differently

Hello Kevin. Thank you for all of your hat knowledge. I’m new to hats, and would like to know what you think of hats made from 100% rabbit fur. I’m considering buying one, but I would like to know what qualities to look for, and what do you think of them in general. Thank you.

I can’t lump them all on together..tough question… some are great, some suck. Price doesn’t lays reflect quality. Too many things to say here, I’d suggest watching a few videos, there’s too much to say right here.. I have many videos on the subject though… kzbin.info/www/bejne/jp2chJSBh9pnprs kzbin.info/www/bejne/r5uZgniJmpanqqs kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z3_Hnnd6gseLn8k

Hi Kevin . Thanks for passing on all your wonderful years of experience with hats . I’ve learned so much , and bought a couple of hats on your recommendation from JJs . I wanted to ask ... I have a couple of 20 year old Borsalino’s with the raw edge , like some of your hats . The brims are getting floppy . Is there anything I can do to fix them ? I found Kahl hat stiffener online , do you know if that will work on the soft Borsalino qualita superiore felt . Thanks
@KTGHATS
@KTGHATS 4 жыл бұрын
Douglas Hart most stiffeners are okay, I uploaded instructions on hat stiffening yesterday, i never used that stuff, but if it’s for felt, it’s probably okay, Even strong hair spray works fine..I’ve used Scout stiffener, also good. Use my directions..

Do you know of any places that would offer a good quality “Indiana Jones” style beaver felt fedora I could use daily, and still have in good shape for my son, grandson, and great-grandson etc?
@KTGHATS
@KTGHATS Жыл бұрын
The best thing I think you can possibly get is the Adventurer by Akubra Hats, they’re some of the longest lasting fur felt hats on the planet. They’re for life. They don’t use beaver because Beavers are from North America, and these are from Australia, they use Wild Hare and very high end furs. www.davidmorgan.com/shop/product/1128/adventurer-hat-open-crown/ I’d strongly suggest this hat over any unknown dealer online. If you’re dead set on buying American, then The Stetson Temple is 100% fur felt and reasonable, in the color Mink it’s perfect, that’s been a staple US made Indiana Jones hat for decades, be careful though, there are a lot of small time internet dealers charging a lot for shoddy beaver IJ hats, don’t go to a source unless you read reviews,or hear good things about them. I’ve helped a lot of my viewers get refunds from hat makers like that.. I’d say go with a big brand like Akubra or Stetson. The Akubra is going to take rain and snow, while the Stetson is a little lighter,maybe softer..but not really rugged.www.henrythehatterdetroit.com/browse-all-products/Stetson-Temple-p80786208

Hey Kevin. I love the way you reshape the hat you're wearing while making this video. Can the temple fur felt be reshaped that way?
@KTGHATS
@KTGHATS 3 жыл бұрын
Not really, no. Only higher grade Borsalinos and vintage hats are soft like that.. they just don’t make hats like they used to.. sometimes if a hat is really worn in and very soft, u can do it. a lot of modern hat customers find hats like that to be too mushy and soft, I love soft hats but they’re not for everyone,

Hey Kevin - great vid again. But one question is still remaining: When I wear a fur felt or a wool felt do I feel any difference? Is one of them warmer, more breathable, or what so ever?
@KTGHATS
@KTGHATS 4 жыл бұрын
Nope. They’re able to make fur felt lighter and more dense, so u can get a lighter hat w fur,that is because when u make a wool hat too thin, or light, it curls and won’t behave, they get wet and flop down over your face like a pillowcase.u cannot make a wool hat thin or light without it failing. But the short answer is NO. but there’s really no difference in feel,other than the texture of wool being more itchy, warmth and breath ability is the same, it will depend more on things like this.. does it have a leather sweatband and a man made,polyester lining? THAT will make a hat warmer and heavier. but not the felt content. The only real advantage is the way fur felt lasts,it last much longer, it doesn’t shrink nearly as quickly and you can rest ram and reshape a fur felt hat when it’s messed up, not really with a wool hat. They feel the same.. the real difference will be in the structure of a hat, leather band,lining, is it heavy felt, thin felt..?

Do some or all hats require a break-in period to conform to your head?
@KTGHATS
@KTGHATS 4 жыл бұрын
The softer it is,the less break in..but yes, always.. we all have different shaped heads, tall,wide,long, etc..the leather takes the shape of your head eventually and fits better. Western hats take a lot longer.. soft dress hats not as long.. but yes, always

Hi Kevin, I am curious to know are there other fur felt hats besides rabbit? I remember my dad having hats that were graded with the X. I’ve vaguely remember him talking about his hets and saying stuff like this one is a 10 X or this one is 100 X and so on. I even think I remember him saying some of his hats were a beaver Fur is that a thing?
@KTGHATS
@KTGHATS 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, the more X's the more beaver gets added to the rabbit. 100x is generally 100% rabbit , and yes, they also use wild hare, nutria.. They add chinchilla or buffalo to the rabbit too. I have videos on the X rating system

Wool felt hats don't seem to breathe as well as fur felt hats. They're just too hot for me. I can wear a fur felt hat in really hot weather and my head doesn't sweat any where near as much as it does wearing a wool felt hat. 🤔. Happy belated birthday wishes. 🎸🎂🧁😊👍

Hey Kevin, I watched a youtube video kzbin.info/www/bejne/goTIaIlpiqxkZ5I and I really liked the hats that Seth Macfarlane and Charlize Theron were wearing. The finish seems harder than most hats I seen. Can you tell me what they are? I am interested in buying one. Thanks
@KTGHATS
@KTGHATS 2 жыл бұрын
They spray extra stiffener, it gets hard. the finish is regular, the felt might just be stiff. In films, the wardrobe dept uses nasty stuff, shellac, varnish, krylon crystal clear, airbrush, spray paint.. they subtly age the hats.. but I think you’re looking at regular felt that’s slightly stiff
