We try to break down the types of felt used in hats and explain the differences in feel, performance and price. Why do some hats cost so much more?.. And is it worth spending more?..
the different types of felt usually improve as the quality goes up..
(in the way they last and perform)
100X Beaver felt is at the top of the felt quality hierarchy
it's made from only the softest beaver fur from the beaver's belly.the underneath,downy,soft fur. it's very soft and wears well.
Any fur felt that uses the things like nutria,beaver & wild hare are going to be equally as good, most fur felts are mostly rabbit though.
Beaver finishes (Royal beaver,Grand Beaver,Peluche) will be fantastic in the rain and snow, maybe the best because it's also very thick too.I've had snow piled up on mine and it has no effect.
velour finishes or silk finishes are also usually quite thick and repels rain nicely, they vary in thickness and quality but remember to set all hats w the brim snapped up,either hanging or upside down on its crown.
Fur felt in general can vary in quality from troublesome to flawless, it's a big category,but if the hat says fur felt, it should be okay with some rain,although it can still lose the shape when it dries. That's why its important to set the hat away from heat,on the crown or hanging,brim snapped up.
Lite felt is great stuff and easy to use,. it's usually very soft and does well in rain,it's foldable and not expensive,and easy to use. These hats always snap back into shape, I'm a fan of these hats,they come in every shape from tiny brim pork pie to big brim western. great hearty hats for not a lot of money.I have plenty of customers with ones 20 years old that look good, in general they don't last as long as fur felt,but they feel great and the folding thing is priceless.
You can't reshape these very well with steam, but you can do a little bit of reshaping.Use packing tape to clean lint from wool hats, a hat brush won't work.
regular US made wool felt,(not Litefelt), is best when used in stiffer hats like the derby,pork pies,homburgs,top hats... It can be enough quality for some folks but these are very hard to reshape with steam, technically, you aren't supposed to be able to steam wool felt hats, but you can do very simple things, it won't respond to the reshaping process very well at all,
use a piece of packing tape to clean it,
hat brushes are only for fur felts.they DO NOT WORK WITH WOOL FELTS,so if u wear wool, not fur, skip the brush. Get packing tape.
PLEASE hit "SUBSCRIBE" !
IT HELPS ME SUPPORT THIS CHANNEL,keep the lights on..
and is no cost to u!
Thanks 🎩

What about mink fur? Or mink mixed with beaver? It's more rare but more expensive and I guess "better"?
@KTGHATS
@KTGHATS 5 жыл бұрын
hyperbunny its very oily,spiky hair..they usually use a touch of mink, its traditional, there was even a famous vintage hat model called “a touch of mink” it’s expensive and they usually use a bit for the texture,it adds an oily touch,,like those tissues that have lotion mixed in...like that, we sell one called the Valencia for $565 jjhatcenter.com they have chinchilla and mink etc
@KTGHATS
@KTGHATS 5 жыл бұрын
not really “better” though...more like a marketing thing, it might feel a little different..maybe feels a little better to some folks, I’m not sure about that though..beaver/mink vs 100% beaver is not very different at all

I was looking for a rabbit fur felt fedora like Indy's hat of course. It was over $300 so there was no way I could get it. In the end I gave up and got the one from Dorfman. Supposedly its crushable...shall see when it arrives.
@KTGHATS
@KTGHATS 9 жыл бұрын
They are the ones w the license from lucas film But they are made in China There are many more in the market that cannot use the words Indiana jones because dorman paid zillions to buy the rights for the name, it used to be Stetson years ago They call it the Temple Now Like $175 color is mink But it's nothing great ,$300 is way too much for regular rabbit fur felt hats, figure $150 to $175 is average for a good brand. Anyway if it's made in China the crushabiliy and rain repellency will be so so but if it's nice and u like it then y scored, if it's just not great then return it and I can find u stuff for $85 american and crushable, or rabbit fur felt for $175 top quality anyway if u enjoy the hat the felt quality is no big deal if u avoid the storms and wetness
@Daehawk
@Daehawk 9 жыл бұрын
quadrogong1111 How can I write to you? It came today and for what I paid it is ok..I like it enough...but its like a cross between a cowboy hat and a fedora. Not really Indy at all. The crown is teardrop not straight and the brim curls up at the sides. Id be interested to see what you could offer. Thanks.
@KTGHATS
@KTGHATS 9 жыл бұрын
offer u as far as advice?.. keep it off the brim. Store the hat hanging on a hook or nail or coat rack.or store it upside down on a shelf,but never on the brim. Especially if it gets wet from rain or snow, always follow this rule. If u remember one thing, it's this.. all the other things people do to knock the hats out of shape all stem from that rule not being followed When its resting on the brim, it makes the brim get soft & flat and out of shape..also, when the hat is sitting like this, we grab it by the pinches in the crown and we do it thousands of times in its life,basically wearing a hole in the felt after some time. So basically, by storing your hat on its brim, u mess up the brim and the crown,which is the whole hat. GL w your new hat, glad ti worked out well for u, and a good fur felt IJ hat from a nice,classy brand should run about $150-175, and a really good rollable,rain repellant US made wool felt from a NYC hatmaker is $85 no tax here, we have it in 7 colors including,of course..brown. take care..K

quadrogong1111 Im looking at your site now. That $85 fedora you speak of...is it like Indy's? On your site the Stetsonian and Valencia look a LOT like what I want but cannot afford that price. The hat I want is called The Hero hat I think. 2" or 2.5" brim, shorter crown, single line crown, and the pinch is sharp and all the way to the ribbon. www.screenused.com/?sectionID=miscellaneous&subsectionID=RaidersIndyHat.cfm like that. What would you have like that priced $85...or $85 - $125 or so.

Is there a difference in felt like the royal Stetson quality felt in the Saxon, and royal deluxe quality felt in the Temple? I was wondering because I find the Saxon felt to be softer? And the Temple to be more stiff?
@KTGHATS
@KTGHATS 3 жыл бұрын
No. I’d ignore that royal,and royal deluxe stuff..nothing more than a hat lining, it’s marketing..in my experience it means nothing. If there is a difference in quality, it’s not enough to matter. The Stetson temple is not by nature stiffer, They’re all different. It depends on who sprayed the stiffener on it,or how long it’s been on the shelf..they soften as they get shopworn, some are stiff, some are soft..it’s just a crapshoot. in general, a shorter brim with a welted edge will hold its shape better. Some temples do great in the rain, flawless.others get a warped brim from a shot of steam, they’re not all the same, the fit and the softeners will vary greatly fro, Stetson to Stetson. Not so much w westerns,but a lot w the fedoras.

Kev Litefelt Bogart Worth It? Or Should I Wait For Stylemaster or Whippet Back In Stock?
@KTGHATS
@KTGHATS 4 жыл бұрын
Totally different, it's a rollable,soft hat u can stick in your coat pocket. The wool crushers are different No lining, wool felt, welted edged brim,no leather sweatband.. I think even if u buy a Stylemaster or whippet, there's a place in your wardrobe for a wool felt crusher. You will need a cheaper,rain hat u can wear in nasty weather without worrying. They're cheaper, softer, less detail..bit u can put it in your pocket when u go out.and they take weather nicely They're not the same.. it won't satisfy your nostalgic, teardrop fedora craving...it's not the same. But it's rugged and useful hat for u, even if u have a Stylemaster or whippet..

Great videos! Could you maybe comment on the type of beaver used in cowboy hats? I have a 40's/50's Open Road Stetson and older Resistol cowboy hat and the beaver seems to be a lot shorter and that hats are fairly stiff. Informative as usual, but I wish you mentioned the brands and name of the beaver hats! So hard to get Beaver hats. I got a nice Christie top hat and spoke with a hatter in Rochester and he told me that even those plush felt hats are only the best rabbit hair. Went to the website and their was no information! Was looking at the The San Sebastian and The Seville must just be partially beaver felt. I see The Greeley is all beaver. Is that the price one can expect for a beaver hat with a 3.5"-4"brim? I know cowboy hats can go much higher $800-$1000. I've got a few hats:an Akubra Territory, Stetson Gun Club--to stiff, and my most recent is a Stetson-Stratoliner. Keep these videos coming.

+Lewis Ward we have all beaver hats that will blow your mind, custom made for us in barcelona Spain they are 100X quality and like nothing you've felt before, totally pure, no stiffeners or anything on the felt..just soft,pure.. $450, and we do a mink/Beaver hat for $550, only less than a dozen left though.. these things need to be custom made,custom ordered,nobody stocks stuff like that..we are one of the few,but we have them custom made to our specs..and when we do..we shoose a brim size that is well loved, a classic..like a 2 /8 " Borsalino type looking fedora..it's classy and elegant. Also,getting a beaver hat body of that quality and making it wide brim? u need an oversized hat body,and that costs a fortune. Dress hat beaver is I really suggest the Explorer which is a hat that is made by the same guy in Spain, he makes these hats for famous British hat companies that sell for $450, we sell them for $250, open crown in 5 colors,amazing quality..$250,high end European fur felt,not beaver,but jut soft,lighter than any hat I can think of, it rolls up for travel,and u can shape it w your hands,no steam needed..it's soft enough to manipulate,but sturdy enough to hold a good snappy brim and keep its shape.. www.porkpiehatters.com i can send u pics if u want to see anything

@KTGHATS

It’s not recommended, but as long as it’s not wet, and there’s no weight or pressure on it..it should be okay..u can leave them rolled up for many hours or a day or two .. nothing should happen to it. 99% of the misshapen crushers get out of shape from people rolling them incorrectly,or stuffing them into tight bags, putting heavy objects on them.. It’s meant to be rolled loosely,and carried in your coat pocket..or loose bag. Just rolling it should hurt it though.. I’d imagine if it was rolled up for ages, like a really,really long time.. like years..It would probably affect it..

What about 100% wool felt??
@KTGHATS
@KTGHATS 10 жыл бұрын
Hi, I speak about wool felt a bit here, the stuff from China is usually so so, and not the best for rain,the U.S. Made wool is better but not the best for rain, better for lighter rains, and the U.S. Made lite felt is the best wool felt, it is soft and holds its shape. And is better than the other wool felts for rain and snow, still, u need to store them away from heat, hot rooms etc and hang them up or keep them upside down when wet, also, flip the brim up when wet. Wool is cheaper but not always the best, u are better off w lite felt, a patented wool felt that u can roll up too, any felt is okay if u store it right and watch big rains, but cheaper China made wool felts can be almost impossible to reshape.

Baron of Baku usually they will tell you, if it is fur felt ,it almost always says, 100% fur felt on the sweatband or something, Otherwise, you need to just go by feel. wool feels scratchy,itchy..rough,like a wool pea coat or something.. Fur felt is going to look the same,but when u feel it, it doesn’t have any scratchiness,or itchy,rough texture the way wool does..it’s usually much,much finer,closer to velvet than wool. Beaver is rare, that’ll be vintage hats and stuff ranging in the $500 plus range.. Western hats are measured with an X system,anything with 4 x’s or more is pure fur, but sometimes it can be hard,usually I rub the felt against the side of my face or the underside of my forearm,and feel for softness.

Hi Very interesting and just what I was looking for, I have a 1920's hand blocked Cloche, Made by Fisher Hats, Cookstown, Northern Ireland . Guessing from your video, the era, longevity and shape (although it does have a few dimples on the crown), it may possibly be rabbits fur felt? How can I be sure? ...any information you can give me would be highly appreciated. Thank You Gx

I have seen so many gorgeous Borsalino hats, especially the mink wiry hair and Royal Beaver back at the Pork Pie Hatters Store. So exquisite and luxurious. Now at JJ's, hats are more like fashion/utility rather than a form of art/quality of the fur. That's rather sad...

Don’t get me wrong, JJ has some of the most gorgeous and smart looking hats and caps out there but you know what I mean, the unique premium art and quality is sort of history. Now, it’s more of utility and functional and the looks...

Do you make your own felt or do you have a place you purchase felt from? If you purchase felt could you tell me where you get it from, I’m trying to find good felts since I’m thinking about opening a shop maybe. Thanks!

Hey Kevin. Could you tell me if the Stetson Saxon fur felt fedora is beaver or rabbit? Do they make both beaver and rabbit? Thanks.

Most of the Stetson fur felt hats are rabbit. It’s rabbit, good choice.

What do you think about buffalo fur felt? I've seen a few and they claim to be water repellent. I don't know if that is accurate or not.

They make it out of all furs..I've seen rabbit,beaver,nutria,otter,wild hare,cashmere,chinchilla. beavers live in water,their fur has a lot of oil content, have u seen the outermost,spiky,wiry fur of a beaver? it almost looks oily. They live in the water so the fur is naturally water resistant. Now, u can take any kind of wool or fur and shred it down into a cottony kind of consistency, then put it in your sandals and walk around with it under your feet for a few days until it compressed into what we call felt. That's how the ancient Egyptians and folks like that would do it.. or similar ways.. U can use any fur but some are better than others, I would think buffalo would be tough but not too soft. And as far as being water resistant, any of these felts will be that, it's not hard to make that claim, even wool felt with some lacquer stiffeners would be able to say 'water resistant" so that's not a big deal, When u buy a cheap hat that doesn't perform well.. the waterproof thing isn't usually the problem. it's more like they won't hold a shape, or the shape all but dissolves when they get wet..cheap hats have brims that don't snap,and they can feel stiff like cardboard,or sometimes so soft that they flop over your face like a pillowcase when they get rained on. (and they cannot be reshaped either) I'd say those are most likely good strong hats for rain,but they won't perform like these softer dress hats, the hand shaping etc they're probably more stiff,heavy and thick like a western hat, I'd assume, but I've never seen one so I'm not sure.

quadrogong1111 Thank you for the quick reply. Appreciate it and it was very helpful. I just saw a buffalo felt hat today and was a lil put back because I've never seen it before. I'm liking for a water repellent hat because Texas weather is so random and it'll rain on me at times. Might just buy a high quality felt hat. It'll be worth the money for longevity.

Andy Garcia I can help advise you, the Akubra line from Australia is amazing for rain and general ruddedness, they last a long time, very long. and they're around $175,totally cool in big,big rains..and they make everything from cowboy hats to safari hats,fedoras w short or large brims, and really edgy cool styles.great colors.they're a little earthy.all sorts of looks, but they all have the strong felt.. if u want to go with Quality and rain-ruggedness, this is the best stuff out there in that price range..by far. The brand has lasted since 1870, and are consistent and reliable as it gets. they have over 100 styles, but we carry 8-9 things here in a few colors. we have these styles: Bushman, ,Sydney ,Hampton ,snowy river, Stylemaster, Banjo Paterson,Cattleman stay in touch if u have questions ...kev

Andy Garcia www.akubra.com.au/creation.html read about how they make the hats, i have a lot of respect for them as a company, they keep the prices steady for years, a lot of bang for the buck, a very authentic,old brand....and classy.

Hey Kevin, random question but I just noticed In some of your videos you say pork pie hatters, and others JJ hat centre. Are they just two different shops?
@KTGHATS

The owner's son opened up two satellite shops, I was asked to run one by myself,and accepted. I worked there 4 years until the lease expired,and we decided to close shop. It was a cool, downtown shop I ran myself, but small, not worth tying up hood employees, JJ's grew exponentially & we needed everyone back there.
