Really nice hats. About 4-5 years ago I picked up a used 7x "Beaver Quality" Rodeo King for $45 along the same design, but with the flattened front brim 4-1/4" wide and crown of 4+at lowest and 5-1/2" highest. While not a Stetson, not a bad hat however I know its a fake/composite leather band. Doubt it really have much, if any Beaver fur.

How does the silverbelly 10x shasta hold up to handprints, any staining? Possible to clean it?

Yes, easy to clean, they’re not really a problem at all, you can brush it with a hat brush and there’s a white powder in the felt that you can brush and distribute over the fingerprints and stuff.. when you get something like a stain, you can use sandpaper or a sanding sponge to buff away stains that aren’t really deep. If you spill a bottle of barbecue sauce on it, that’s not coming out.. but everyday stuff? Like pen marks, fingerprints, general dust and dirt from the road..that stuff all buffs out easily. I like the Tycoon a little more. Looks a little nicer and a cleaner style to it. But that's just me. I'm not a southern boy. But I am from Nevada. So it's a mix of rain and sunshine all year long. A Tycoon is waterproof? Or can at least within some water without shrinking and or stiffing up after dried. I do like the lower crown. The higher crown makes you look like Doug Dimmadome. Lol. Cool video, man.

It's super rainproof but can get soft and lose it's shape, so hang it up after rain.

How much of a quality difference is there between the Shasta and El Patron?

Not a lot when you feel them.. I’m my opinion, the Shasta feels really expensive, similar to the super high end hats. I don’t believe in buying much higher than the Shasta, not unless it’s a special gift for someone.. otherwise, they kind of max out there, you won’t get more performance for a 100x, it’s mostly just looks, slightly different texture…most non-hat wearing folks couldn’t tell the difference

I tried the shasta, el patron and el presidente a few weeks back. Honestly couldn't tell the difference, even on picture I made, I can't tell. Obviously I went with the 10x shasta.

Quick question. by any chance do you have a video or can give tips on how to stiffen a stetson felt hat crown ?? Long story short I bought on eBay ( from 84 or 86 I believe ) “ rancher “ edition stetson eveything else is fine, except that kinda surprised me and wasn’t mentioned by the seller , but I didn’t want to make such a big deal about it PS or any long term issues if I wear it like that?

They can cut it down to any size u want. Sure. U buy it and tell Benji in mail order,u pay for the modification, and u can talk to the hatmaker if u want. Benji will tell the hatmaker,Van.. and it's done in a couple of days.. just ask him first if it's okay, I'm sure it is..but I'd talk to him first, ask when Van is in, discuss it w him. We've done that before 😉

I tried to re-crease my 4X Beaver Rancher with steam. It wouldn't budge. The brim curled nicely, but the crown was defiant. It wants to be a Cattleman crease and not a Gus. I guess I'll have to submit to its wishes. :)

A western needs a lot of work first, you’d need to open that crown up first, open and round, pop out the crease and use strong steam, or saturate each part w steam a lot. Once u open the crown up, u start again, but if the hat is still shaped like a cattleman’s, that’s gonna be impossible. if u can find a bullet shales object to stick inside the crown, ( like the metal cylinder I use on my steaming table at work) u can open the crown with the metal form inside of the crown, and then steam it open in that form. U can also steam the crown like crazy and then stuff it really, really full of paper or tissue, make flat pancakes of paper, tons of them and stack them inside the crown, force it in there so it’s stuffed as tight as possible, and then steam it open….u can take the lining out of the hat, and use your fist inside of the crown to help open it up.. it’s a lot of work if u don’t have a strong steam source. But yeah, the idea is to open the crown first,so u have a nice, round, open dome. Once u have that blank canvas to work with, u can easily shape the Gus, even without steam. ….But until u steam open the crown, there’s no way.

@@KTGHATS Many thanks, Kevin! I was successful on my second attempt. It needed more exposure to the steam than I was giving it. The hat looks better now as a Gus. The tall Rancher look didn't mesh with my 5'7" stature. The crown is lower in the front now. The fact that the crown is even taller in the back now isn't an issue. The front seems to be the key dimension, visually.

I think the Gus is the least complimentary of all creases. Go cattleman, pinch, telescope, open, or Montana instead.

The leather sweatband? Yes..real leather. I assume that's what u meant? Generally, when we say " the liner" it's referring to the satin or silk lining. It's real leather,but nothing special..in a $400 hat they can afford to use real leather, Only when it's a budget hat,made in Mexico etc,those hats use artificial leather..but even Stetson uses real leather in the Mexican made palm westerns.

Although beaver is usually softer than rabbit, that isn't a reliable way of telling them apart. Beaver fur felts, even if they only contain a small percentage, nearly always have it indicated on the sweatband. If you only see 'fur felt' then it is rabbit or a blend of cheaper furs.

It generally says the amount of X’s in a hat, anything that’s 4x or more is all fur, usually rabbit..as the hats approach the higher X’s ratings, 10x and more have a good amount of Beaver, while a 100X is pure beaver. I wouldn’t worry about it much, as long as it’s fur felt, a 4X Stetson or more..it’s fine, that’s a rainproof, long lasting hat..beaver is expensive,nice..but not necessary by any means

Yes, those are Shastas, we called it the Tycoon, we ordered the 10c Shasta with a more velvety finish , we just changed the name of the hat on our website,
