Gus Hansen is one of the most fundamentally unsound player on HSP. His hyper aggression was sufficient in most games back in the early days. It was very hard for Gus to adapt to the new poker age - even pre solver - where players are more capable to battle against aggression. Still a legend though.

I saw a player correctly (idk if theory correct fold) fold the second nuts in a tournament the other day. Flop was 653 with 1 heart, turn 8h river offsuit Q. 2 big stacks at the table of an $800 buy in tourney. They both had about 3 times average chips. The player in position raised all in on the river and the oop player went 8 minutes into the tank and folded and showed 7c4c and the in position player showed 9h7h...pretty sick.

Daniel wrote about this hand on Cardplayer I believe back around the time it happened. He asked Gus about it and Gus put him on KK/AA but Daniel didn't understand why Gus would check if he had those hands on the river since Daniel would just check those hands back. Pretty bad cooler and really not sure Daniel can fold the river. I guess looking at it today, how many bluffs does Gus actually have on the river to check-raise all-in? And this being 2004?, probably not many or none. So maybe it is a fold for Daniel?

Daniel has improved as a player since 2006 when this hand was played. I think he makes the fold today. He used to have a leak where he would announce all the hands that beat him on the river but would then call anyway, which he did in this hand. He doesn't do that as much now.

Usually I really like your analysis but here I really don't understand why you'd prefer Gus to raise small on the river instead of his check? I think (considering at that time and what Negreanu represented) this check on the river was genius! It was up to Daniel to decide what to do ... The cheapest way for Daniel would have been a re-check. But this re-check wouldn't have paid him for his full house. On the other hand concidering the wide range Gus could have had the bet Daniel made was right (IMHO)! However when Gus raised Daniel (a check-raise) Daniel should have known that he is beat! That's my only critics to Daniel's play! Am I wrong?

Sick spot. I feel like 98s and 97s might be in a bluff check raise range maybe? Action goes check raise, donk bet, check raise. 98s might realize the bet on river shows you are beat and you try to rep a boat because you have no showdown value and if you donk bet river your going to get flatted by over-pairs and 5x. I don’t know if folding this pot is ever profitable unless. With a 2:1 odds you only need to be ahead 1/3 of the time.

97 wouldn’t bluff River it would just call, why would you try and bluff with a hand that beats bluffs and try to have a full house fold which isn’t super likely?

Is it Gus's image that makes Daniel feel like he has to call? Bc I think back to the Vanessa Selbst aces full vs quads hand and how she tried to find the fold. It feels like Gus doesn't have a lot of bluffs in the check-raise line on the river except 5-X and a lot of those wouldn't check-raise the flop. So from Daniel's POV what value hands is he beating? 9's beats him, 5's beat him, so he only beats 6-5s and there's 1 combo of that. I'm sure that I'm missing a lot, I'm still learning and Daniel's skill goes without question, I'm just not sure how this isn't an easier version (in terms of finding the fold) of Sebst's cooler that you talked about.

I guess in theory it is a fold but Gus especially back then would show up with 95s or65s or 85s. Gus’ image definitely got him paid off, vs most anyone else you can probably find a fold

I know Phil is trying to be nice, but Gus Hansen was not a great player. I don't know that he could even accurately be called a good player I think the word we're looking for is something like iconic , because a player can be iconic without being any good at all

To be playing at that stake professionally you’ll have to be somewhat better than most of your peers. He might not be one of the best around now, but he definitely was one of the best during his time.

@@Footie4ever you do not have to be good to play at those stakes professionally. You just have to be rich. And that's what Gus Hansen was, I believe from playing backgammon professionally. But he was never a particularly good poker player

You were being far too kind on Daniel here. You didn't even offer an opinion on what Daniel should have done when Gus check raised all in while you have an opinion on every other decision on all the other streets. Is it a case of being afraid to criticise Daniel?? I don't mean to be too harsh because I love your breakdowns in general! I just found it surprising that you didn't offer a strong opinion on that river call which was the biggest decision of the whole hand!

gus was well known to be loose and aggressive, Daniel was not in any way out of line calling the river.

Gus was known to be loose aggressive for sure and could mix it up with any two cards but he wasn't so much of a maniac that he would be regularly shipping it all-in into a strong range with air. Gus admits he played the hand badly but he also accused Daniel of playing it badly. In an interview with Joey Ingram, Gus said that given how the action played out, there was basically no way he could have had anything other than the nuts or at worst second nuts in that spot. '97% of the time, that's the nuts' were the words that came from the horse's mouth!
