Great video. I am just now getting into raising quail but I do haver chickens. I hooked up the 5 gallon bucket to a garden water line which is on an inline timer that turns on twice daily. I have a water trough float in the bucket so that it fills up just to that level so that I never have to mess with water at all. It is a HUGE time saver. Thanks for sharing this video!

Your water cups are nice. The ones I use have 3/8 barbed in one side out the other. The cups have a nut and bracket that locks them onto cage wire. The hose is flexible so if it does freeze it never splits. Also I have a spout at base of the water bucket that has the same barbed. So I can shut the water off at the bucket for repairs like yours. Everything is fed with the 3/8” id x 1/2” of hose. It’s so simple. I have my cages hanging from ceiling of chicken coops semi close to ceiling. The chickens never fly up there. They eat the spillage from the quail which isn’t much. I don’t worry about drip trays. All my coops have roofs so that are nice n dry. I don’t have roll out cages. I have sand boxes inside. I put in fresh material a few times a week. The eggs are clean. Most lay in the sand boxes. For roll out cages that really work use wire closet shelving. Plastic coated. The gaps are about 5/8” in the floor. The birds don’t have any problems with it. I still like the sand boxes. The birds use them constantly.

His Way Homestead So far I’ve been good (praying it stays that way🙏) but researching before I built my cage the quail groups I’m in said even mice can do a job on quail by chewing off their feet. So anything bigger than 1/4” hardware cloth mice, snakes, rats can get in. Apparently if a mouse can get his head in, the rest will fit too.

If its outdoor and you have the space for the eggs to roll out. You are not afraid of snakes or rats would get in through there?
@HisWayHomestead
@HisWayHomestead Жыл бұрын
We have had some issues with rats getting into the feeders. We stopped doing quail for now, but the plan of we continued would to be a finer mesh wire and a hinged cover that covered the feeder and the place where eggs roll out. Never had many issues with snakes…. Don’t like snakes… 🤪

Can this wire mesh prevent snakes from entering the cage?
@HisWayHomestead
@HisWayHomestead 3 жыл бұрын
Probably not. It’s 1” square openings on the top and sides.
@HisWayHomestead
@HisWayHomestead 3 жыл бұрын
You could always put smaller opening wire on the outside to prevent snakes. We have problems with bigger predators and needed the heavier wire to help with that

Silly question, but how do you keep the chickens off the tops of the cages? ha ha My chickens are acrobats, it seems.
@HisWayHomestead
@HisWayHomestead 4 жыл бұрын
The chickens are not allowed in that area. We did have that problem. They would get on top of the cages and eat the quail food and we even had crows eat the eggs. We fenced it off and put netting over top

If you change the direction of the top wire the eggs will roll very easily

randy elston not sure what you mean, but the eggs roll down pretty well.
@micahtheurich7721
@micahtheurich7721 4 жыл бұрын
Place the top wire of the mesh running in the direction you want the egg to roll. The way you have it in the video the top wire of the mesh is running perpendicular to the direction of how you have the eggs rolling, the wire is acting like little speed bumps and catching the egg at smaller angles.

@@HisWayHomestead I got on here specifically to comment on the "topwire" as well. It looks like the cage on the left has the wire oriented correctly but the one on the right (one that the eggs dont roll so well) has the top wire running lengthwise with the cage! Great design, I wanted someone more substantial than the 1x2 design and the 2x2 has it!

Ok. We with chickens and fighting game Rosters, Ducklings, we just started last week. All going well. Feeding them with small live fish from the pond. Keeping alert with avian flu, we don't have them since the first avian flu, but to get access to poultry suppliers, we have to comply to state policy with vaccinations etc.. And we trying to go to Quails which is the first time for us, before restrictions re avian flu and poultry is triggered.
