Quail Hutch Made From Wire Dog Crate
Episode 110
My previous Quail Hutch design wasn't really working out so I built this Hutch from a Wire Dog Crate. We also reduced the number of Quail in our flock.

Description
Hello, we are Jay and Virginia. We are a couple in our 50's creating our homestead in the Cascade Mountains of the Pacific Northwest.
Almost Homestead refers to our unconventional approach to homesteading on separate properties as well as the fact that this is not our forever home. We hope to buy another homestead in the future where we can have more acreage and privacy.
Follow us as we learn to be more self sufficient, grow our own food, forage, and develop our modern day homestead.

The eggs can be a chore to shell when cooked but bite sized pickled eggs are so good. And quail are a good backup food if needed. Thanks for checking out the video.

Use that cheapo cushy plastic liner with holes in it, use it for everything like a bottom drawer liner super perforated. Small dog crate, yepper. Oh and line the top with it w zipties too so they dont hit their heads when they get frisky lol

Thank you so much. 🙂 I'm glad that you checked out this video after watching the first quail hutch build. The wood floor and other areas that let poop gather and stack up were a bad design. The dog crate worked great but I did catch a mouse or two in the plastic tray under the cage. So having a place where mice could get to the quails feet was also a bad design. I wish we could have had them on real ground during the day. In the end I think that a wire floor is best. One where poo just falls to the ground below.

Cool! The only issue I had was sometimes a mouse would climb into the sliding poop tray at the bottom of the cage. I did have the little upper shelf platform thing for the quail so I figured if a mouse was under their feet they could move up to the upper deck. But we never had an issue with nice getting to the quail.

Please dont keep them on wire floors it can damage the birds feet among other things. It is best to use bedding such as pine shavings and then scoop it out when its time to clean.

Can you/have you considered lining the tray with newspapers? The paper will compost as well. Seems it could make easier cleanup to just pull the paper and droppings off the tray rather than have to scrape it. Where I live there are free community newspapers to pick up in grocery stores and other places. The publishers collect old ones to recycle and may be happy to have someone offer to take some. I don’t have my quail yet but that’s my plan.

What would you use if you wanted to make a safe floor grate for a bird like a chukar or a pigeon?
@AlmostHomestead
@AlmostHomestead 2 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure. 1/4 inch hardware cloth is what I used. I did try to give them solid objects to climb around on as well like branches and a flat piece of wood.

What kind of wire and how did you wrap it around waterer to hang it? Nice little setup.
@AlmostHomestead
@AlmostHomestead 2 жыл бұрын
I picked up the wire in a free bin at a garage sale. Not sure what kind it was but it was thin enough to work with easily. I just started the wrap at the open end without covering the threads. Then wrapped up toward the other end, back to the open end back to the other end until I had the jar cradled in the wire.

What type of wire did you use? I had used chicken wire on the bottom but it seems a little big, I am worried it might inure my bird with sustained use.
@AlmostHomestead
@AlmostHomestead 2 жыл бұрын
I believe that it was 1/4 inch hardware cloth (wire). I made sure to have a few solid surfaces that they could be on if they wanted. We don't have quail anymore but if we ever get them again I would love to figure out how to have them on the ground.
@dusj1179
@dusj1179 2 жыл бұрын
@@AlmostHomestead I used chicken wire for my little crate for my chukar since she was getting dirty feet, what sort of solid surfaces should I put in her cage and also how do you keep the wire fastened and from drooping downward, I have been using zipties and string right now but don't know if it is good enough.

This cage is far too small for any living creature let alone sensitive birds like quail who's instinct is to hide undercover. What is the point of poor animal husbandry when improvements are so simple.
@AlmostHomestead
@AlmostHomestead 5 жыл бұрын
I'll keep adding branches and foliage for cover and food. I might add a little shelter structure at some point. If they start to show signs of stress I will reduce the number of birds in the cage. Thank you for your comment.
