Personally, I prefer Quake 3's plasma gun sounds over Doom 3's plasma gun sounds. However, I also prefer Quake 4's hyperblaster sounds over both Doom 3's and (barely) Quake 3's plasma gun sounds.

I'd like to point out, three years later, that I believe the shotgun in Q3 and Doom Eternal share the same sound. Doom's is a little modified, given some thicker bass and pitched down a hair, but hearing the shotgun here while playing through a UN campaign I noticed similarities. Hope someone else chimes in and confirms!
