Quake Live Tutorial: The very basics of dueling and item control

just a little heads up for those of you who have learned to time mega health. i'm pretty experienced, if not pretty good considering i am only a few years into the game so far. i wanted to let any of you who still are looking to get into duel that after you master timing to the second for mega health at least. you need to make sure that if you ever pick up the mega health before the red that you don't pick up the red close to 10 seconds afterwards. You have to either pick up the red 5 or less seconds later or 15+ seconds later or they will both respawn practically at the same time on the next spawn rotation. The reason being is that the red respawns every 25 seconds, and the mega health respawns every 35 seconds. SO if you wait 10 seconds before getting the red after taking the mega health, it is like saying 10 + 25 = 35, so you've basically made them both show up at once. There is another way to avoid this entirely, and that is to go to mega first, clear the area and then attack the red and flush your opponent out from there and steal it. This will give you plenty of time to kill him or make him run, and then make sure the items don't sync at all. Now say you were out of control, it is perhaps advantageous to try and make your opponent take the red armor 10 seconds after the mega health, or at least close to that. you want to keep timing until you notice the RA being taken 10 seconds after the Mega Health because then you'll have a chance to steal one of those items. Just focus on positioning to get one of the two items, typically place yourself somewhere between them. Wait for your opponent to take one of them first so he can't get the other one before you can.

Thanks, glad to hear that. It was a bit disheartening because I was making really blatant mistakes due to the talking, but I guess it was helpful nonetheless then :) I'll do more stuff like this in the future, in actual games then. Christmas/New Year's was a bit busy and I've been working on a lot of Hearthstone stuff lately. But I have not abandoned Quake :)

Hey, really enjoy your Quake videos as I'm a steam nub and they really helped me getting started. Can you tell me how to achieve this 2D-Style of the power-ups on the map? I also saw it in some pro matches but I couldn't find an answer through google for the hell of it.

Easy bro - go into Game Settings -> Option -> Advanced, and in the first section, Simple Items turn to Yes

Spent about 40 minutes on this jump in the tutorial map today to finally get this right once, after 17+ years of quake lol. After getting it once it got easier, but still not as easy as others make it look. If you've got a champions key maybe add me, my username is the same as here. :)

+Christoffer Coölin Well I obviously can't speak for everyone, but I think that Quake has a small but stable player base, so we'll just have to see. I have enough other games that I'm playing atm (which is why I'm not doing any content currently), and I have my eyes on some other shooters like UT4 and Dirty Bomb and of course Overwatch when that comes out. But I think Quake provides some very specific things that no other shooter offers so I'd be surprised if everyone switched to Doom.

no, I tried DOOM Multi Player for some time, and I returned to Quake. For me the DOOM one is more like casual, Quake is competitive.
