Qualitative Data Analysis with ChatGPT (extremely time-saving) 🤖 🔥

Is it possible to conduct a qualitative data analysis using ChatGPT?
Whether you do grounded theory, thematic analysis or content analysis, qualitative research methods remain quite popular.
Qualitative research is so well-regarded that it often becomes the go-to approach for student theses, particularly when analyzing interviews, social media posts, or other forms of qualitative data.
Unfortunately, this method is also incredibly labor-intensive. Sometimes, interview transcripts have to be evaluated word by word.
Wouldn't this be an ideal situation to seek assistance from ChatGPT?

Qualitative data analysis can be used to summarize or structure large amounts of qualitative data, i.e., interview transcripts, documents, or social media postings.
Summarizing means abstracting the content by forming categories, a process also known as "coding." You assign a "label" to small units of analysis, such as an answer to an interview question, and can thus present hundreds of pages of text in a single category system.
Summarizing also means that you don't know in advance what categories will emerge. This approach follows an inductive logic, from specific (the data) to general (the categories).
Structuring means assigning the content to pre-defined categories. These categories can, for example, be derived from the literature. This results in a so-called codebook that specifies when an analytical unit corresponds to a certain category.
Both tasks are extremely labor-intensive and repetitive.
That means they are tailor-made for artificial intelligence, or even better, for a language model like GPT.

How can we do this when we have investigations where privacy issues are involved and participants have signed releases? We can't enter the information into GPT because it breaks privacy rules.

Yes you would need a local instance of GPT or another LLM

It's possible to sanitize/anonymize the data before entering it, that way you do not in put PII or confidential data

If I put all the transcriptions of my interviews in the prompt, the text is too long for Chat GPT, are we supposed to pay to put our entire script ?

You can also do it step by step. At the open coding stage (first level abstraction) in any qualitative method it doesn’t matter if you do it step by step or all at once. It might be even better because you can make sure that the AI does not skip any transcripts. Pls also delete any names and company information before entering transcripts in ChatGPT. Best of luck 😊👍
