I really like those twisted rope like aerial roots in the back. I probably wouldn't use it as the front but I'm glad you kept them. They give some great character to the tree.

Nigel Sir,with all the risks taken and the hard work that you have put on this tree,finally the tree is coming to what we can call a ‘perfection’ .With both the branches and the root developed so well,the tree is looking awesome!Just love the tree and all the videos arranged in 5 parts for the year 2021 for this tree.Thank you for tutoring us in how to make a Bonsai tree look perfect👍

Just an amazing tree. I am 25 now, and have some small trees, and quite some seeds in germination. I hope one day, i have a tree from seed like that😋

I’ve been watching bonsai channels for quite a while now, but always saw the ones with a more “old school” (if I can call it that without meaning to insult anyone) interpretation of bonsai. Lots of wiring, and trunks with the “S” shape, and all. It was eye opening for me to watch your talk on quality trees. I really think I’m more in line with your philosophy of having a bonsai that is authentic to what the old large trees look like in nature. And as a long time gardener it never made sense to me that branch pruning and root pruning were done in different years on those channels. I’ve had a bonsai pot that I bought and have loved for over 20 years, but never have done anything with it for some reason. (It’s not really expensive or anything, but it appeals to me.) And I just ordered a 5 pack of tiny American larch trees that will be delivered in March to start a small forest in that pot. Thanks for your great videos! I can’t wait to see the progress that your community makes in the gardens this spring / summer, and I am enjoying and learning a lot from the bonsai videos.

Dear Nigel, that was a great series for processing your bonsai. This part of root preparation has brought me a lot personally. So far I have neglected the root processing on my bonsai (compared to your approach). Thank you for your detailed explanations which are very inspiring. I will do better in the future (encouraged by you). For me you are and always will be the best video channel on KZbin.

Wow! That was a very detailed pruning and repotting session. Just what I need! Your tree is gorgeous and it has a beautiful branch structure. When the tree is defoliated you get a much better view of the tree. It will look fabulous by June. I’m finding it a very steep learning curve. When I saw my first bonsai trees at the Montreal Botanical Garden, I was blown away. It looked so magical and it never occurred to me that I would be capable of creating some thing like that. So it’s a late start as that was over forty years ago!!

Yes Nigel, the soil mixture you use is the one I also have utilized. I just haven’t fed the plants nearly as much. They seem to be well enough without the food. I can imagine feeding them daily adds significant growth however and will be doing that come this growing season.

Beautiful job...again! One of my favorite things about your technique is the fact that you give yourself positive reinforcement. When you meet a challenging situation you figure it out and when you're done executing the solution you evaluate it and say "That looks good." I've never heard you swear fireworks after you make a dramatic cut. Great self-control...or do you just edit out that kind of stuff?

Really enjoyed this mini 5 part series Nigel. I learnt a lot from these videos. I remember hearing some time ago that you were planning to visit Peter Chan at Herons in the UK. I'm guessing Covid stopped that, but is the trip still on for the future? Looking forward to seeing yourself a believer in clip & grow meet Peter who is a fan of wiring every branch.

Surprised you didn't remove the areal roots on the back that grow to the side and wrap around the trunk. They look a bit off to me because everything else is straight. Tree looks awesome. Hope my trees reach this quality in 20 years!
@OddBonsai3 жыл бұрын
It's always great to see you work on the roots and the amazing root systems that you manage to achieve. All your hard work definitely gets rewarded. If the woody part of the root base is sitting on the bottom of the pot is it possible that it may block the central drainage hole?

I went through a phase where I was using granite poultry grit as the main component for my soil. At 8$ a bag I was really happy until I had to move a tree! I am certain your perlite blend is much much lighter

Yes, weight is certainly a factor in bonsai! The heavier the tree, the less it gets moved!

Been waiting for the repot! That’s a beautiful tree you’ve grown. In many of your videos you mention putting fertilizer in your water every time, what kind of food/water ratio do you use? You also said your soil doesn’t hold the fertilizer, so how much do you feed your plants that haven’t been planted in your perlite/turfus mix?
@TheBonsaiZone3 жыл бұрын
I use about a pinch of powdered fertilizer in my 2 liter watering can or pop bottle. All my plants are in bonsai soil!

i feel like perlite is underestimated. I had some trees in pure perlite because that's all I had at that time and i was amezed at how good the roots were looking, almost as good as my trees in akadama
@TheBonsaiZone3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I've found that perlite has many of the same properties as akadama, I've seen the roots break up the particles into finer pieces and it seems to work great for both developing trees and for refinement.
