🎶But I'm a quality creep, I'm a quality weirdoooooo, what the hell am I doing here?? I don't belong here🎶 (but for real, this is something I struggle with - the balance between wanting to improve at your craft/quality improvement vs. getting bogged down in perfectionism/overthinking/etc as the bar rises - I think as one iterates on their own process, they get better at identifying where they're at and how to work through it)

Just last month I missed the deadline for an art contest, I spent every minute of free time I had after my 9 to 5 making this sculpture 60+ hours of work and by the end I didn't achieve the quality I wanted nor delivered on time. They ended up accepting my late submission but they didn't have to, this was super frustrating and is just one example of my perfectionism holding me back. Being a perfectionist is great when you have all the time in world, but that's not reality.
@kittokattxx15 сағат бұрын
a pretty good example of a webseries with a team of people working on it is alan becker's animator vs animation. the quality has scaled up over time and there is often months between uploads but the animations are long + high quality and it seems to be scaling well, doesn't show signs of stopping anytime soon
@ConcernedAlien20 сағат бұрын
What happened to Noah Antwiler is probably a worst-case scenario for what quality creep can do to a content creator- they hold themselves to a standard they can't realistically meet every time, causing an already unwell brain to become even more unwell and eventually break and be unable to really produce anything. Maybe that lets him off the hook too easily, but quality creep sounds like something that could have played a part in it.
@pizzatime4219 сағат бұрын
You spelled your last name wrong in the sponsor link lol-- it should be /gregguevara Also as a bi guy it did not occur to me that your lighting was bisexual, but I'm glad that was your first thought
@marshallmkerr16 сағат бұрын
Yeah, I'm 72 and bi and this was my first clue there's a distinctive lighting atmosphere I was supposed to be using all these years. One place I lived I had blue LED Christmas lights strung around the corners of the ceiling in the living room; but I always assumed that was more about the cannabis use, than the sex identity.

this feels close to a concept I was expressing not long ago called satisfaction creep. the same thing from the other side of the coin where the baseline quality of the entertainment you want to absorb gets higher and higher until what would have satiated you in the past can no longer keep up.

Go look up that project the Ren and Stimpy guy made about an unlabeled can of food. Raised a buttload of crowd sourced money and then released a product that was like 40% finished with a lot of the animation frames still in the stages where they’re just outlines with notes on them.

the casual backdrop of the video really helps the points come across as authentic and sincere, instead of some planned out robotic thing. Comically, not worrying about it improved the effectiveness of the video as a whole. i may have misinterpreted the point

I really appreciate how applicable this is even outside of art. I'm in engineering, and for the record, I do feel like engineering is a form of art, but I think it's really cool how your advice is just as useful to people in our position as it is for people in internet creation spaces.

I'm pro quality creep. The best example is Mikhail Bulgakov, who spent his whole life writing and perfecting ONE novel, and he never released it. After his death, his notes were collected and used for publishing. This is how we got The Master and Margarita. It's a masterpiece, maybe one of the best novels I ever read. It's a level of quality you almost never see. I wish there was an organization who could finance quality creep like that. They would say "Greg, you're talented. You're creative. We're paying you a decent salary for the rest of your life to work on ONE masterpiece. You don't even have to release it while you're alive. Just make sure we can release it after you pass away." If they did that with enough people over generations, at the beginning there would be nothing, but at some point they would generate the best of human creativity.

Sometimes quality creep can LOWER the quality of something, usually when the project is taking a bunch of premade assets and making something new like sprites or old footage for example. Eventually the person who makes it wants to show off their actual skill which usually doesn't fit with the style of what they're making and can take you out of it.
@justadude49387 сағат бұрын
A lot of series I see fall to quality creep are comedy series too, and I think part of it is they want to stay just as funny, but they slowly run out of jokes. If you have a set cast of characters, and a setting, there are some really easy, really funny jokes you can make with that cast and that setting. Eventually you slowly run through those easy jokes, and you've got to start digging deeper to think of funny things. In those cases, I think people should just end the series. Accept that they've gone through 90% of the good jokes their art, and instead of spending a month trying to figure out what another funny joke will be, just start fresh with new characters and a new setting. Like instead of trying to dig out every possible bit of ore from a mine, accept that it's now much easier to just set up a new mine on a fresh site.

A big part of the appeal for my series is how good the animation is for the software it's created in. I once calculated it would take me like 10 years to finish it at the quality I'm aiming for at the rate I was going, so instead I've made no progress. I can't commit to that lmao. Looking into ways I can animate faster tho

It's good to sketch out a plan or idea of what you're trying to make. For a video, it's a rough outline with key points (that's what I do anyway). For a painting, it's a little thumbnail sketch of the overall idea. Once you've communicated that, clean it up (don't spend too much time) and ship it out. Move onto the next thing.

sounds a lot like "little joel" a month ago, and "pyro live" right now, and every other 2nd channel from a successful youtuber. For some reason youtubers always get surprised when their 2nd channels get popular, and end up quality creeping. Although in classic Jreg style this one is a lot more introspective.
