that’s fascinating. I know yall got lots of cool species up there to catch that we don’t have in Texas. But anyway, flounder is famous in Texas. It’s a part of the “Texas Slam”. Inshore fishing on beaches and bays. Flounder, redfish (red drum), and speckled trout are the “famous” Texas slam! I’d have never guessed people don’t keep them up northeast. Very interesting!

Ling definitely used to be keepers. In the 70s I’d go on whiting and ling trips on party boats out of sheepshead bay in Brooklyn.

Your videos are very helpful. Today I went on a head boat thinking I'd catch flounder in the Chesapeake. But I knew from your videos that it wasn't going to work when we got out. We drifted too fast and I didn't have heavy enough jigs. Yesterday I was out in my kayak and I finally caught a keeper flounder, then another. Plus a redfish. Out of about 50-60 flounder this month only 2 have been legal.

Used to get a lot of ling in the late 50s early 60s fishing on the Viking out of Princess Bay. Had to be careful cleaning not to break that green sack (gall bladder?) or the meat was spoiled. Good video John!

The title had me thinking smooth dogfish. Smooth dogfish is delicious and tastes like cod. I caught one while porgy fishing about 5 years ago and decided to keep it. I cut the meat into bite size chunks and mate a Mediterranean-style saute with raw green beans, raw garlic, olive oil, and oregano.

He, He, Back When a Kid fishing for salmon in British Colunbia, Dog fish were a plage. No one wanted them. I caught a few Big ling cods, and sold then for 10Cts a lbs. Flounder, has very mild fishy taste. That's why they come with some kind of sauce at restaurants. I fish for flounder as well as most species. Fresh Bluefish is also very good. Barracuda(Down south) is just as tasty as Snapper.

hey john do you ever use fluke belly for doormatt bait or is that a thing of the past?
@JohnSkinnerFishing4 ай бұрын
They're a very good option to tip a bucktail or teaser, but I haven't used them in years. One problem is that they sometimes get fold over and catch the hook when jigging. If there's a good drift and the strip is always straight out, it's not much of a problem. With Gulp, I never have to think about this. The other problem is that technically in NY if we want to use them we have to have the carcasses from which they were cut onboard. If while cleaning fluke I save the waste strips from the edges and bring them out the next trip, I'm actually breaking the law unless I bring the fish racks with me, which I'm not going to do.
@joewhite94754 ай бұрын
@JohnSkinnerFishing thanks for the reply and info that's good to know about the carcass. I've been enjoying fluking more and more every season now it's my main targeted species I love watching yoir videos and using your techniques. you have made alot of people alot better at fluking thanks

Great informative videos. Because of you my interest returned to using bucktails, as I did when I was a kid. Based on a recent video where you sent a camera underwater, do you recommend glow in the dark bucktails to entice more bites, especially from Rockfish out here in California?
@JohnSkinnerFishing4 ай бұрын
I see no harm in using them, and I think they could help in deep dark water.
