Fantastic video, thank you for this! For those homelabbers with rack space - I think might be _the_ definitive FreeNAS storage solution that will cater for 10G+ speeds well into the future; it has everything and more that a homelabber could ever hope for. Given the CPU generation, power efficiency should be pretty good but those 40 mm turbines do seem loud, so I am really curious what the idle sound levels will be.

Love the video and am looking at buying one of these servers. In your next video i hope you go into detail if the storage card can be flashed to IT Mode and how loud the server is while running. This would make a great FreeNAS server.

D-1541s will happily do more than just storage. My home VMWare has been running on a 1541 for 3 year or so, pfsense, FreeNAS (pass-thru) and a few VMs for things like cameras etc. Mine sits in a cse-826 chassis. So basically you've pancaked my box :D

Well, true... the D1541 can do more than just storage... it just won't work to replace my virtualization server, so I guess I was thinking in those terms. This machine can replace my storage function, but not the 40-50 VMs I have running.

How do you keep it cool if it's in a bedroom and how loud is it? How loud is a quanta grid 4 bay? How do you keep your drive from failing if your power goes out?

I would not recommend keeping this in your bedroom unless you plan to be single the rest of your life. To protect from power outage, use a UPS.

My rack max 35" also need think about cabling, so I want to make sure 35" Is it true depth? Does it include front and rear handles? if so I think will work for me.

Seems like I miss all the deals, $275 for this, now I can only find the ?lower spec? SD1Q-1ULH and they are like, $800 Canadian :( Can't even find shots of the inside or much info on those to see what pcie expandability looks like, if it can even do one card or not. Uhg. This same model I so far can only find for $1200+shipping :(

@@ArtofServer Yeah seems I miss out on all the good times lol, especially since I'm so far from any sort of datacenter or cloud companies that might go bankrupt and liquidate cheap stuff. After a couple days checking these things out and kind of obsessing over how neat they are I grabbed a d51ph, no so u.2 or PCIe expansion, but 128 gigs of ram and two 2640 v4s for $780 after tax and shipping. More than I wanted for the start of my homelab refresh but buying a separate disk shelf and building a whitebox server would probably cost more, I'll just eat a lot of Kraft dinner this month it seems.

would be interested in idle power consumption as a NAS server and also on how loud it is. Most pizza box (1U) servers are loud AF. lol.

Not always. I have several 1u servers that are quieter than most larger servers.

Any idea where to get spare caddies for these things? They're still selling the servers themselves but they're out of caddies and I'm not sure if they're worth getting since I can't find caddies anywhere.
