I had one of these in an old pentium desktop system(was a pizza box). I remember the spin up sound and seek test. Definitley cant forget that!

Imagine if modern companies will produce 5.25 harddrives in 2024 with the current day technologies. What specs will they have? :')

@@ArchangelTirael Always thought that myself too!! Certainly not fast, but imagine the capacity! :)

Oh, a bigfoot! Nice one!

My teacher at the votech that I went to in the 1990s had one of Quantium Bigfoot drives not sure if it was this exact size but he put in a computer in our electronics lab and it was our main local RedHat Linux server.

Sounds like the main drive bearing might be going out. I never owned the 3.2GB Bigfoot, but I did own a 2.5GB for a while.
@bigbluebananabread4 ай бұрын
This one has definitely seen better days. Fun drives, but I'm sure the 2.5GB variant was at least a bit fun (well, slow of course haha).
@bricefleckenstein96664 ай бұрын
@@bigbluebananabread For the time, the 2.5 was fairly fast. Slow by current standards of course.

Nice, my CY 6.4 is pretty intermittent these days, but it did come from a recycling yard. The other silver Bigfoot I have died in the middle of HDmotion and has never worked right since.
@bigbluebananabread4 ай бұрын
Bummer! Iconic drives in their own right, this one was from a thrift store and also went through some abuse so I'm not surprised it has issues either. Shame about the one dying from hdmotion though, that's tragic yet somewhat poetic for one of these haha

Sounds like the very end of the drive is very damaged to the point even seek commands are not doing good, but it still boots decently well. I wonder how it would do if you did an HPA to reduce the capacity a bit (that's if that drive is even capable of that, which it totally might not, I'm not sure when HPA started to be a thing)
@bigbluebananabread4 ай бұрын
Should've totally done that! I think I'll have to experiment with it a bit more, although unfortunately it sometimes doesn't initialise properly either so I suppose it likely wont last too long regardless. The fact it boots windows is enough for me, having a bigfoot is really nice!
@arnlol4 ай бұрын
@@bigbluebananabread Yeah the bigfoot is an interesting drive. I wish the original ones like mine didn’t have such a boring seek test, the "classic" Quantum seek test like the one you have here is so much better. I’ll have to get more bigfoots of the other variants eventually.
@bigbluebananabread4 ай бұрын
@@arnlol Totally! The classic seektest is so nice. It really sucks that they're pretty hard to find for a decent price, especially since they were supposedly so common back in the day.
