IBM OEM for NEC?
@bigbluebananabread
@bigbluebananabread 5 сағат бұрын
So this is a drive NEC actually manufactured! IBM allowed them to produce drives using their designs, so this is a product of that deal! ExcelStor later took over the deal when NEC departed from the industry. It's an interesting part of history!

I wonder if the cover is highly polished brass, certainly looks the part like gold without the comparatively huge expense of actually gold plating the top cover 🤣

What a nice example of one of these! The spindle sounds amazing! I thought the A180 and A260 had soft seektests, but this one is somehow even more quiet. I found an MD2060 on eBay for like $30 a while back, but it was Britain and untested. After seeing this, I’m starting to regret not snatching it up. It looks the same as this one.

Yeah this thing is really quiet! I'm amazed I was able to find one working, it's a shame they're so impossibly hard to find. Best of luck with hunting for one, hopefully one will pop up for a good price! They're really quite beautiful drives!

Don't you need minium 45 mb space to install windows 95
@bigbluebananabread
@bigbluebananabread 19 күн бұрын
If you make it skip the disk size check with a compact RTM install it can squeeze onto a 40MB drive! It's certainly not a great experience, but it's just nice for the sounds it makes.
@MarkWhich
@MarkWhich 19 күн бұрын
hmmm! 41MB is not enough for Windows 95, it requires 50-55MB, unless it's a slave drive.
@bigbluebananabread

RTM can install on a 40MB drive without issues when using the /ID setup switch which skips the disk space check. Are you suggesting it's not actually running 95 in the video or were you just curious how it managed to fit?

Why did you install windows xp on this drive, why didn't install like windows vista sp2
@bigbluebananabread
@bigbluebananabread 22 күн бұрын
Vista as a whole, particularly SP2, were released after this drive was manufactured. I usually try to keep the OS demo's to be as close as possible to the manufacture date of the drive. While I can't always do this perfectly, this is one of those cases where I did my best with it! Although, perhaps something older than SP3 would have been wise.

Yup, the two main ones are Disk Central (run by DiskMaster) and Hard Drive Hub (run by XLTech)
@bigbluebananabread
@bigbluebananabread 22 күн бұрын
There are two main public servers I can think of, so I'll address them below: The first: discord.com/invite/yaV52cx3YZ - it has a few creators in it and quite a few others who are into all sorts of drives. Many people who comment on my videos can be found in there, so if you're into voice-coil stuff it's a good place to talk about it. If you're into really old drives, like stepper-based drives and things more from the late-80's and early 90's (which to be honest seems to be the main audience for this server), then you also have this one from DiskMaster's channel: discord.com/invite/ZaFgvkgBsv Hope this helps! Sorry for the late reply!

I've had my P300 for 2 years now. I purchased it in July of 2022, and at that time, it was the cheapest 1TB I could find brand new. The hard drive is extremely reliable, but the biggest downside is that it's noisy, probably one of the noisiest HDDs I've ever owned. In fact, mine is probably louder compared to this video I've always ran a test through CrystaDiskInfo & HD Tune no errors were found whatsoever. It low-key reminds me of our old IBM Deskstar. Great video btw. Now I know that P300s are little more noisier. 🙂

NO scratches on the cover, perfect bearings and no bad sectors! What I bought is the Caviar 2420 425mb With the pink stripe! I bought it for more or less Converting directly to the dollar, something like $56 with shipping.
