Quantum Optix 40 spin fishing reel how to take apart and service

Lol reminds me I need to find a replacement handle for the Optix I found not too long ago but I do enjoy the optix fishing reel it has been enjoyable to use.

Thanks Steve. I'll think about it. The channel is more about teaching folks how to keep their reels in good repair, rather than about me, but yes, I was a teacher early on in my career and I guess some of that has stayed with me along the way - Dennis

I remember when Quantum first came out. As you said it was Zebco’s premium brand and I remember it being much more expensive than regular Zebco’s. Out of reach for me at the time cost wise. I think they were owned by Brunswick back then in the 80’s. Anyway, it’s interesting to me how things change over time with status, quality and marketing. Thanks Dennis.

There are still nice Quantum reels available. The Cabo and Boca reels are particularly well done.

Hi Steve, you’re so right about Quantum back then. The main reason I don’t buy a new Quantum reels is because I had a very expensive Quantum Cabo that didn’t last 3 years because the bearings corroded so badly and quickly. So recently I get a cheap Optix just to see one and lo and behold bad bearings again. That’s it for me and Quantum.

Hi Dennis, i like your videos and the info on them.I have one of this reels and i was wondering what size are those bearings and can they be replaced with quality ones and will that improve the performance?Thanks

I don't know the size of the bearings, you would need to take them out and measure them. I don't have one in the shop, or I would measure for you. The bearings can be replaced with higher quality bearings, but those bearings would cost more than a new version of the reel sells for at retail - Dennis

@2ndChanceTackle thank you for your answer, I did took it apart and found out all bearings are different size three ball and one roll bearing made of plastic ,and yes I can't find 1 of each to buy, even if I did it will pass the value of the reel 🙄🤔😊

It’s funny, the Optix 60 that I have had No ARE override. It’s one of several reasons I don’t like my reel. The second reason is that all the bearings were in horrible condition. It took a lot of work to bring them back. I got the reel in decent shape but it took a lot of work. I only paid about $10 for it though. Mine must be an older version as mine had a traditional AR dog rather than a clutch. Mine had three ball bearings at the pinion and main gear. Interesting to see how another Optix reel was made. The bottom line for me is I understand why we need reels like this in the market but I still don’t like this specific reel and based on past experience I dislike Quantum reels in general Thanks Dennis. - Chris

Thanks Chris - the Optix has been around for a long time now. I suspect your reel has a different version. You can see that the rotor inside this reel has the set for the traditional dog, yet it does not have one. It is clearly a transition piece - Dennis
