Still have a quite a few of the fast cast reels from the nineties. My brother in law cleaned out my father in laws house a few weeks ago(pops has dementia and lives with us now) and he brought over an SUV full of brand new rod and reel combos and boxed reels that my pop in law had hoarded from twenty to thirty years ago. One of the brand new reels was a Quantum like this. Restored my first Mitchell 300 last week. Found it for ten bucks and was frozen from hardened grease. I spent a few hours cleaning and shimming and now it rotates freely with hardly any resistance. There is not one single scratch on this reel! Caught a 14 inch Bass with it Tuesday. Gotta love the old stuff! As always Thank you Dennis!

Found one today at a thrift store and though I was having a problem with the bail closing reeling this was a huge help figuring it out. The answer was the same. Clean it! Thank you.

I only have one Quantum reel. It is a large saltwater rear drag and I’ve never used it. It is ready to go though. I’m not overly fond of Quantum reels because of past experiences. The Shakespeare Alpha I briefly worked on yesterday had the same anti-reverse setup as this Quantum. That Alpha I mentioned had the worst completely smashed oscillation gear in it that I have ever seen. That’s why I only worked on it briefly (before getting a full refund). This is a solid design for a reel. I don’t prefer this type of AR but that’s just me. I like the three bearings. You did a great job bringing this one back to life Dennis! By the way my arthritic fingers don’t like fast-cast reels which is why I only have one. Oh, Dennis, I got another Peerless Bam reel tonight. I’m well over 210 in my collection now. I’ve got to slow down.

Yes the Quantum reel (Zebco) and the Shakespeare Alpha reels are value priced entries and both have a good reputation. The materials are not as robust as the higher priced reels, so you will find that they break after prolonged use or abuse - Still, I haven't seen the oscillation gear issue you had in your reel - Dennis

@@2ndChanceTackle I still have the reel but have no illusions about fixing it. If a cheap parts reel becomes available I might fix it but I am Leary of a reel with a gear that basically exploded.

Thanks for the post. I could not make out the name of the "best still photos by...."was it Allen Tani? If so you are right. I have met him at the Fred Hall show in Long Beach. He is member of a fishing website same as me. Like you he is very generous with sharing his knowledge.

Good video . I have a qumtrum SS20 REEL That Casses about 15 to 20'. Can you help me fix it. Thank you.

A limited casting distance is not mechanical. Check the line for bunching when you have the max distance cast. There may be a snarl or other issue. Also check the line and weight of what you are casting. If you have heavier line and a light weight, it just won't go that far. If you think you have a mechanical issue, please let me know more - Thanks - Dennis

I Had The SS1 And The SS3 I Liked Them When They Worked . But That Snap Fire Trigger Broke From Use on Both ! It's The Reels Weakpoint . It Would Bend Back And Do Nothing Like That One Does ! That Alone May Be Why Someone Ditched It ! I Actually Still Have One Of The Triggers from One Of Them. It Looks Like A Ball And Socket Setup ?

Yes - it basically runs that way. You can always use the reel with a manual bail flip! Best wishes - Dennis

I have this same reel, but I took every part off to repaint it and didn't take pictures and there is a spring for the anti reverse that I can't figure out how to put back in. Does anyone have an image of said spring in the correct location? Fantastic video nonetheless.

Do you know what the “CNR” position is on the anti-reverse switch is for?

It determines the position of the QuickFile and how the anti-reverse operates

My reel, this model, just had the quickfire mechanism hang-up, then, snap and do what your's is doing. How can that be fixed?

If it is a the quick fire arm itself, it needs to be replaced. If it is a bail that is sticking, it may bent and need to be re-shaped or replaced.
