In the middle of lockdown in Curacao we make the decision to move to Panama where we'll be forced to do a 14-day quarantine aboard Bacchus. Fast sailing, we break our speed record three times on the way and Dani get's seasick (again!). 6,000 miles and we've still only caught one piddly fish!

HMNZS Perseverance! Most enjoyable vid. I enjoyed the footage of the passage. I was impressed with how well the self-steering was holding course; I wondered if its rudder would have sufficient authority in those seas. Congrats on a fast passage and safe arrival. I know this was a few weeks ago so interested to see how plans develop. Impressed at how you are making the best of the situation.

Thanks Mark! The Hydrovane does an amazing job, and the small rudder seems to be able to keep her in the groove, as long as there isn't too much weather helm. The big waves don't seem to bother it, unless they're really quartering us, then she can get pushed off course and up to windward. We had this issue in the final days of the Pacific Crossing, which caused some frustration!

Nice episode. You're brave to go at night through such a crazy busy place. I love your video during passages, that's the best part of sailing blogs. And the cool kiwis :)

Great video of the passage, and yes it is quite eye opening to see how many ships are going through the Panama canal. They would have looked giant on Bacchus . Hot and sweaty days in Panama.

You guys should look up Atticus when you get there, I think they're still hanging out in the mangroves on the east side of Panama.

Hi Asher and Dani. Imogen and Miro were here for dinner on Wednesday evening and Imogen told me about your adventure and vlog. I have binge watched them all now and the kids are really enjoying then too 🙂. Fantastic videos, really interesting and real. I have learnt a lot and so are the kids. I'm now hanging out for the next one!! Take care, Nicky (Dunedin based second cousin 🙂)

Wow, that was a great story guys. Loved the reciprocal footage of Bacchus sailing. You really captured the feeling of your passage. BTW you can’t sail 6 miles with a line over the back without catching a kahawai at home here in NZ. Maybe a bit of rag tied to hook might work better?? Stay well and safe in Panama.....

Congratulations on your epic journeys. I own a 2000 361, so really impressed to see how versatile they can be. Of interest, do you ever remove the baby inner forestay with the view of improving clearance of the Genoa clew when going about in mild weather day sailing ? Carry on the good work.

If you get a chance, try to find Stugeron 15mg in a pharmacy. It is the off shore sailor's best friend. No seasickness and no side affects.

Really enjoyed this episode, and you had a very fast passage! We were most impressed with your windvane.....does it hold course well in surfing conditions? Also wondered about Dani's sea sickness.....does Dani take anything? I also suffer with sea sickness, and I do take some meds and also eat lots of crackers to settle the nausea. We really enjoy all your videos, and you are our favourite couple on KZbin at the moment.....keep up the good work and enjoy your journey.

Thank you! Yeah, the Hydrovane steers a better course than our hydraulic autopilot in surfing conditions. I've been thoroughly impressed by it! Dani takes half a sea-sickness tablet sometimes, and also eats quite a few crackers!

Out of curiosity, did you consider Bocas del Toro as a place to land? Much calmer, and less expensive to boot!! Colon puts you closer to the canal for sure, but the pucker factor getting in would make it worth considering going elsewhere!! While you’re there, be sure to stock up on Ruiz coffee!! Duran is ok, but once you’ve had the Ruiz, you’ll be ruined for almost any other coffee!
