We're finally sailing again! We can't stop smiling in Las Perlas, even in the lightning and thunderstorms we are just so happy to be out of lockdown and are reminded of all the reasons why we love doing this. Oh and we bought a fishing rod...

I wouldn't switch the handle. I am right handed, and all my spinning reels are rigged just like yours. Cast with the right hand, rell with the left. Keep practicing with the coffee grinder, it will become second nature! Enjoying the series!

We met a LOT of boats that got struck in that area. Dangerous territory for boats! Weirdly most of the boats that were struck were cats...

I'm sure handles on fishing rods are reversible. Take the handle off and switch it to right handed.

Welcome to the left hander's world where everything is not right for you:) Seriously, I love the fact that you are practicing the left side, you'll become proficient in no time and it's probably waking up inactive parts of your brain!

That's not a "left handed rod". It's normal for a fixed spool reel to have the handle on the left. The right hand can then hold the rod. Multiplier reels are the other way round. Sounds odd, but when you try it it makes sense

You have a rod and line that will be fun if you catch a small fish. If you hook into a large fish it will be over in three seconds. Neither choice is wrong.

Yeah I really hope they see the comments of everyone saying most of the reels are reversible. Unscrew the cap on the right hand side and slide the handle out, swap it around, screw it back in and boom. You’re good!

Some questions for the Bacchus crew: - What happens with Bacchus and the channel when you reach NZ? I'll suggest you start by renaming the channel "Sailing Bacchus" (drop the Home part) and then do a circumnavigation of NZ, timing it so that you visit bluff at the height of summer (I'm sure you know why) - Will you need to pay import duties on Bacchus when you get to NZ? do you know how much you will need to pay? - Will Bacchus become an NZ registered vessel or remain UK registered? additional
@sailingbacchushome944
@sailingbacchushome944 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Dave! All good questions and suggestions. We would love to sail around NZ but we also want to build a house on a piece of land we have back home so that will probably happen first. We're looking into import duty at the moment, if we do import Bacchus it looks like it will be 20% of the depreciated value.
@daveamies5031
@daveamies5031 4 жыл бұрын
@@sailingbacchushome944 And you'll declare the depreciated value as NZ$1 🤣🤣🤣we all wish it worked that way, but I suspect you don't get much say in what the depreciated value is.

@sailingbacchushome944
@sailingbacchushome944 4 жыл бұрын
Good question, everywhere you go it's best to ask the locals what fish are safe. In Las Perlas we only caught pelagic fish - tuna and mackerel and these two are definitely safe.

From what source do you charge the outboard engine ? How long does it take ??
@sailingbacchushome944
@sailingbacchushome944 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Ed, we charge the Torquedo through our 800w inverter. If we're using it regularly we need to charge it roughly every 3 days and it takes about 6 hours to fully charge so we just chuck it on the inverter overnight while we sleep :)

Are you not using the wind vane anymore, for auto pilot?
@sailingbacchushome944
@sailingbacchushome944 3 жыл бұрын
No, we still use Florence (the Hydrovane) a lot, for any passage that's bigger than a day sail usually. She takes a little bit of effort to set up (attaching the rudder and vane), so for short hops we use the electric AP.

Hi there. Enjoying your videos . You have a lovely approach to life. Could you tell me the length of your sailing tender? I’m thinking of purchasing something similar as a tender but also to teach my grand children to sail

Thanks Roger! Piwakawaka is 7' 9" (about 240cm). She's an Eastport Nesting Pram, from a company called Chesapeake Light Craft. There's a video of her construction in our list somewhere, and there's a link to CLC website there. She'd make a good learner dinghy - there is "just" room for two adults (its a squash), but an adult and a small child would be more do-able.
