A trip to the Home Depot, fish ordering, and in bed by 10pm after some gaming. Did we just become best friends? 😂

I just watched a video with Dr Tim who was adamant bare bottom tanks are NOT grand... Even for quarantine tanks. The bacteria wants to stick to something to grow and multiply. He suggested glass beads or basically anything to cover the bottom of the tank and provide surface area.

The way these videos are setup is absolutely great, i have a display tank and now wanting to setup a QT.. could i just use water from my main tank to fill the QT since i will be treating all fish that enter it as ill... i have also just ordered a UV for the main aswell and going to have the flow set to kill parasites

Great video. Why does a reef tank need to cycle but a quarantine tank does not need to? Thanks.

I did not see where he suggested you not “cycling” a quarantine tank. You should “cycle” most tanks, regardless of use. What is likely happening here (I’m taking an educated guess): they are doing what’s called a “fish in cycle”, where they’re going to dose the tank with a bottle of beneficial bacteria before adding the fish to the quarantine system. And then water change it, if they test and see ammonia rising, or if the ammonia badge detects ammonia and alerts them. And they will simply allow the nitrifying bacteria to colonize the system through the first quarantine process. And you can do a “fish in cycle” on a brand-new reef tank, before all but a few hardy fish are added. However, there are situations where you don’t cycle a quarantine system. And those are specifically forms of treatment for certain infections. there are some medications that kill bacteria, including nitrifying bacteria. So, in those tanks, you can’t “cycle” them. You have to keep changing the water daily or every other day at the most. There are also methodologies like the tank transfer method for dealing with Ich which specifically revolves around moving the fish to a new tank every 36-48 hours, which exploits the life cycle of the Ich parasite. By new, I mean drained, disinfected, cleaned, and new salt water. Now, that IS NOT the method being discussed here. And you should read about it separately for a deeper understanding. It's also notable that copper does not kill nitrifying bacteria, so you can leave a copper-only prophylactic tank running long-term, and just dilute them back to low Cu concentrations when you get a new fish. Cycle it once, and it’s good. The other part of your question is that a functional Reef Tank needs far more establishment than just “the cycle”. Reef Tanks have very diverse microbial ecologies of which nitrifier's make up only a part. And establishing nitrifier's is just the first step in a long line of ecological succession, often called “the ugly stage”. It was a good question, hope that helps.

He said you add water, you add salt, you add fish and then bacteria, no cycling

Good video on a much needed conversation. This video is phenomenal advice. A process I personally resisted until introducing Brooklynella my own display, eventually loosing all the fish I had at the time. And then getting Ich on the first fish I put back in... Now I have two 20 gallons much like that. One for observation, the other for medications or copper.

Hey Mr. Saltwater I'm looking for a quarantine tank set up that you said is on your site. I would love to get 1. I'm getting more stuff to start on my 1st saltwater tank. I bought a 55gallon. I wish I would of known I would have started with the 75 gallon. But oh well I'll do this. I'm so excited. I want to get one going so I can have my 17month grand daughter see the beautiful saltwater fish. Could you help me with this. Thank you and enjoy your day. Love all the videos. Specially the newbie series.

@@Kenny_Edmonton Copper kills most inverts, it can me used for QT or to treat a fish only tank with certain outbreaks. Some fish dont do well in copper and best to ramp up. Its toxic so other then QT not good to do it just to do it.

Newbie here. How long does a seemingly healthy fish stay in the quarantine tank before transferring to the main tank? Thank you.

Nearly all fish have a shorter life after being treated with copper, it causes permanent damage to their livers.

When used improperly copper can harm fish. I’ve used it for 12+ years with no problem. Some of my fish that have been with me for 10+ years went through copper treatment w/out issue
