the point differential isn't that complicated. If you win a game, the difference in score is a positive, if you lose, it's a negative. Add all the totals together and the team with the biggest number gets the wildcard spot

The need for the wild card is the main confusion with the cup. Expansion to 32 teams ends that issue. Then they have 4 or 8 even groups to pull 8 teams from. Wish they'd mix east and west teams in the groups as a way to differentiate from the regular season. Or/Also randomize matchups in the knockout rounds, brand it as "shuffling" with the Vegas theme they love.
