I don't remember where I came across it, but a while back. I saw a version of a quarter square triangle that involved taking 2 squares that are the size that the unfinished square needs to be, for example, 2.5 Inches sewing up 2 opposite sides, Cutting the square in half diagonally from corner to corner usually from the bottom right to the top left, opening them flipping them over and sewing them back together again.

You're welcome!...for half square triangles it's an inch bigger than the finished size and quarter square triangles 1.5" bigger than the finished size. You can go bigger than that if you want to, you would just end up trimming more off.

Hi Corey, the 2-square method is also my favorite way and I like to nest the seams (press to one side for the first HSTs and then butt them up against each other for the second HST stitching). I never understand cutting a square into 4 triangles (on the bias) and THEN sewing them once they are unstable instead of sewing first (while they are stabilized by the square shape) and then cutting. I also find this much easier when I want 3 colors on my QST. I can figure out what to cut (1 of each color, 2 of background) without losing track of which triangle goes where to assemble it correctly. The only thing I do differently is at the end, I like to "twirl" the centers, like one might do with a pinwheel block. This makes it flatter in the center than it might be with nested seams bulking up in the middle. Twirling the centers (works on any 4-patch) is something I only learned about a few years ago when I first learned how to use the 2-square method for QSTs. Although I already know how to do it, this might also be a great tutorial video for you to make since your instructions are always so clear :) Thanks for endorsing my favorite QST method!
@CorianderQuilts
@CorianderQuilts Жыл бұрын
I had my seams twirled on my QST and completely forgot to show and mention it! It's such a nice way to press those seams. I did share a tutorial on twirling seams in my Moda Block Heads layout pressing video. That layout has so many QST's and it makes such a difference to have a great press.

Hi Corey! The two squares method is my favorite way to make an hourglass block! My first quilt ca. 20 years ago was a baby quilt with alternating hourglass and nine-patch blocks. I was taught a version of the method you showed but used a regular quilting ruler to draw a center diagonal line and sewed a 1/4” away on both sides. Later I got a tool similar to the one you showed in the video. About 5-6 years ago, I got a plastic sheet tool that goes on my machine with lines that helps me keep the point of the square lined up to sew the diagonal lines. Also, I was taught to add 1-1/4” to get the size of the square…we only trimmed off the “ears.” However, I’ve noticed that most tutorials include making the block slightly larger and trimming it down. The June Tailor looked interesting! I’m going to look into it. Thanks for the tutorial!

I usually trim my HSTs with a regular, square ruler. But, I did recently really enjoy using a BlockLoc ruler for them...I've tried those many times over the years and haven't been sold on them. Everyone loves them, and I have one, so I tried it out every now and again...but just never really liked it. But this last time I tried it...just a couple months ago, I really liked it. Thank you Corey! I love your videos and your fabric lines! I currently am working on a quilt with your Buttercup and Slate fabric. I have a huge stash of Springbrook and Sunwashed waiting in the wings. I saw your Peachy Keen line and I love it as well! I better get busy catching up!!😂

I make my QST's the same way and use the Lori Holt Trim it Rulers to square up the blocks. I finally have all sizes from 14.5 down to 2.5. This works great for me and use them also for cutting. 😍 I had not seen the June Taylor Ruler and is very cool to be able to use one Ruler. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the lesson in making the quarter square triangle! I've not done many but I can see how the 1/4" marking ruler could come in handy. Less bulk than using a ruler which is what I've done and I usually end up knocking something off my work surface in the process! I'll have to find one of those!

Thanks for this video! After trying several methods for making these blocks I am now using this technique and fin it so helpful. However I do not have the trimming tool which seems to make this last step easier and more accurate. May have to get one.

You're welcome Sharon! I always like the idea of trying to use what we have before deciding we need anything additional to aid in our piecing. If we can attain great results without a special tool, that's so nice!

Thanks for sharing. I have done it both ways. I love perfect slotted trimmer for trimming half and quarter triangles. I will usually do the block as the designer of the quilt specify's. I have not been doing this long enouph to have a favorite. I like them both.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen that square up ruler used before! I do use the two square method, but then I usually square up the old fashioned way, with just a plain square ruler.

thanks for the tutorial. I have done them this way, but honestly I don't have a favorite way, I usually just do how the pattern instructs. I probably should figure out a favorite way for all the different blocks and stick to it, maybe that will be my goal (thinking as I type here lol); to pay attention to different methods and figure out (and remember) what I like best. Thanks for the inspiration this morning. :)

I think that's a great idea Nadine. I've been thinking recently that sometimes our favorite ways of doing things are perhaps the ways that we've done them the most often. Therefore we have more practice using that method and better results since we use that way most often.
