NOTE: THERE ARE CUTTING/YARDAGE UPDATES NEEDED TO THIS PATTERN AS FOLLOWS:
Under cutting instructions, you need (24) 2.5" x 6.5" rectangles not (24) 6.5" x 6.5" rectangles. The (10) strips 2.5" x WOF are your binding strips. Under block assembly in the first step, you need 12 pink squares (instead of 4) and 4 white squares (instead of 12). In step 2, you will only need (65) 2.5" scrap squares (not 66). Also note that you will need 3 yards of background fabric.

It takes a little bit of time to pin and label everything but then when we sit down, we are ready to sew with no concerns about getting anything switched around!

Thanks for sharing those pressing tips, especially. For the most part, I think I’m going to really scrappy. I am using a consistent fabric for my large centers and after seeing yours, I think I might go get another dark color that will separate my scraps from my background. I think it would be a good way to anchor it.

I'm just getting started. I am using the 2.5 x 2.5 squares as leader and enders as I work on a different quilt. To me this is a perfect pattern for them. I didn't want to just sew rows and rows of squares together and have a plain pattern. I saw this last month and put my heart to purpose this. So as I have now begun the other quilt, this one has begun as well. Mine might take 2 years to finish also. That will depend on what I decide to do with the finished project. A Queen quilt or a lap quilt. So happy you have posted this and, Yes this one will be completely scrappy with the exception of the joining squares. Thank you greatly. This will be fun.

I made design boards too. I got two big sheets of foam board, then my hubby cut them into all different sizes I need. No fancy edges. But when the batting looks thready I’ll just pull the old off and put new batting on top. No one sees it but me, it works great. And hey, our pretty fabric fancies them up 😂

Hello 👋, I am not one to post...however this is my first QAL and I absolutely adore Corey. I'm new at sewing and quilting so I love when I learn new things. I'm currently in the process of sewing block A. I watched Corey this morning and the way she chain pieced her blocks/rows is AMAZING!! I bought the buttercup and slate materials as I wanted to make sure this project was going to look good and me being satisfied as I am finding out I'm pretty much a perfectionist. As I was watching this tutorial I began remembering how my grandmother cut her fabric, got it all organized and sewed it together. She did everything from her chair in front of the tv! She had a template, that she made from cardboard for the pieces that she then traced on to the fabric. Then she cut the piece out using her scissors ( I don't think rotary cutters existed then). Next she had a threaded needle that she would run through the center of the fabric on according to what piece it was in the pattern. This way all the similar pieces were in a pile that she could pull from, but they were "contained" so the speak. Once everything was cut out she removed the needles from the thread and as she needed a piece of fabric she just pulled off the top of the cut fabric pieces and hand pieced the entire quilt. The entire quilt was pieced from that chair! She then sent it out to be hand quilted. Thank you again - this video brought back so many wonderful memories!

Love your show, Love your fabrics Love your beautiful hair 😊… Mr. Kitty wants to be a star 🌟 LOL a faster way than pinning is to lay your second row onto your first row… then pickup top to bottom (with row 1 & 2 ~ right sides together). Then place the 3rd row top to bottom behind your pile (which is row 1 & 2) the trick is to keep track of you first two rows sewing side, which is the right side, mark that side with a pin. Pick up all rows, top to bottom placing underneath pile. Chain sew! 😮😅

Great series! I made my design boards by cutting a variety of sizes (8” 10” & 12” squares) from foam core board I get from a dollar store. I use 505 to attach batting on one side. Thanks, and stay well! Muskoka ON 🇨🇦

I find pinning really helps as well as check your cutting accuracy and quarter inch seam. It can make you crazy when you start to change your colors around. I'm with you. Stand back and see if something stands out of place. But overall on a scrappy quilt it truly doesn't matter.

Great pressing advice! I’m not making this quilt now, but intend to in the near future. I think I will do it completely scrappy, with navy where you have grey. I HAD a lot of 2.5” squares but just completed the American Patchwork and Quilting scrappy sew along which used up a lot of them. Never fear though, I have lots of scraps ready to be cut up!

I love the QS rulers too! I bought one on recommendation from a quilt store. I was so impressed that I had my sister try it too. She loved it so I bought one for her. Now we both have several of them and I believe it’s a game changer for accuracy! Loved your pressing instructions for your Double Irish Chain. That was amazing and so important for beautiful accuracy in piecing!!

I too save any bolt cardboards and I am going to glue some batting to one side to carry fabric pieces to the machine. I really like how you pin the columns together and will be trying that. Thanks for the tips.

I just completed a very scrappy 2.5” square quilt. It turned out 84”x84”. Been working on it for about 3 years. But I still have a whole bunch of 4-patches I sewed together and didn’t know what to do with them. So I am joining in with this sew-a-long. But since I do not want to take apart all the 4-patches, I will be getting creative in the assembly of the blocks. Also I am using white where the pink is in the pattern and dark grey as the background as that is what I had on hand. Sure hope it turns out okay when finished. 🤞🏻

Thanks for taking the time to figure out and share the pressing changes. I prefer to nest seams and this information is a game changer when you are putting together these big blocks with so many seams. I also like your idea for keeping your rows together when you are constructing the block. I'm going to give that a try as well.

I really like this method of pinning and labeling the rows. As I said, I do it for an individual block like this but more often I am using it for the blocks within a quilt so they stay where I want them to!

I'm so glad this project will be paced over time! I have yet to start cutting my B Block fabric, but it is ready and waiting. I really appreciate your construction and pressing tips. I approach this type of project using the 'grab from the pile' method; however, my squares are a motley bunch and I have concerns about my A Block looking very dark! Curating it as you did, plus the devine yellow I found for my accent, should make this much more enjoyable for me. Thank you!

I often use a painting canvas, either large or small, depending upon the size of the block. I don't use it on the front, I put my block pieces on the back with the boards up so the pieces don't fall out and if you stack them, the pieces are not touched. I hope that makes sense. :) I really appreciate you showing your method of planning and sewing all those squares. I'm sure I would have made it MUCH harder. Now I can do it much faster and more organized than I would have done. Thank you. :)

I completed 2 A blocks and one B block and sewed them together to see how my quilt is going to look. I love it!! I am using scraps of your fabric along with some Fig Tree and Sherri & Chelsea. I changed my mind a few times on the background and contrast squares, but finally decided on a Coriander Seeds background and a pretty teal in place of the pink squares on the pattern. Unfortunately, I only have a 1/2 yard of the teal and it's out of stock so I will have to wait a few weeks to get more. Thank you so much for coming up with this fun project!

Hi Corey, I just found your channel and I decided to jump in on the scrappy Irish Chain quilt, your videos are informative and interesting and Tiggs is cute. I really like scrappy quilting and I’ve been saving 2.5” off cuts for a while and this is a perfect time to use them, I’m going to possibly use a mint green instead of the pink as the accent. Dee 😁

By chance, I found your video at the same time I was starting my own 2.5 inch block Scrappy Irish Chain. I like how this aprticular pattern ends up with the corners balanced. I use a large artists' drawing board to lay out my pattern so there is no moving/numbering of the blocks needed. The drawing board is on a table that fits next to my machine. I like how you made order out of chaos, ie, the centering of the red in addition to the dark gray/white pattern. Mine is a cooler version.

I'm with you on the design boards. I don't need something cute or expensive, just something quick. I take a large square ruler and, use binder clips to attach a square of an old t-shirt to it. The t-shirt holds my block pieces. If I'm working on a few blocks at once, I alternate layers of t-hiirt suares and block pieces. :)
