👏 Yeah, buddy! I need to get my Navi back out on the road for some commute miles. It has been sitting at my warehouse with its plastics removed so I can do the AC to DC conversion. I got busy, and there it sits... waiting. How far are your normal commutes, and what kind of fuel economy do you get from your Navi? My commutes often stretch past 60-70 miles/day, so I need to refuel the Navi at least once, sometimes twice before the day is done. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

@@QuasiMotard I’m still in the break in period, so I haven’t bothered checking the mileage yet. I haven’t been able to ride much lately as Michigan reminded us that it was still spring, with plenty of rain and the temps dropped to normal/below. Most of my riding doesn’t take me more than 12 miles from home. Work is 12 on the most direct route, but it’s a fast road with a 50-55 mph limit but drivers are going much faster. I did it once and it wasn’t enjoyable, so I use a country road route that I sometimes use when I’m on one of the Harleys. Short jaunts on faster roads aren’t bad, though. It would be nice to have another scooter with a little extra top speed. I may end up with a new PCX this year if I decide to sell my Electra Glide.

🤯 I heard about that situation with lots of smaller motorcycles down under! Wasn't it something to do with no ABS and needing linked brakes? I know that the 2020-2022 Super Cub (C125) and Trail 125 (CT125) were blacklisted in the EU/UK/AUS markets because they didn't meet EURO-5 emissions. The new 2023+ models have been upgraded slightly to meet EURO-5, and they are being sold again in EU/UK markets. I wonder what gives for the AUS market? 🤔👎 --QM

@@theaustralianconundrum why did they banned them in Australia? Stuff like that drives me nuts... Everyone wants to save the planet, but when you get a vehicle that minimizes traffic congestion and gets over 100 mpg, they find some other reason to not allow it. I would guess (but don't have any proof) that a 125cc bike is WAY SAFER than a larger bike with linked brakes.

@QuasiMotard
@QuasiMotard Жыл бұрын
Howdy! The only downside that I've noticed with the 15T sprocket is climbing hills at particular speeds in top gear. If I drop out of the engine's power peak, then I can start dropping behind compared to the 14T under the same conditions. We noticed that effect several times during the 2021 Scooter Cannonball Run when Adrian could maintain or climb in 4th gear and I couldn't. The reverse happened for me sometimes in 2nd or 3rd gear when I was still pulling strong and Adrian's bike (14T) was redlined or stuck between gears. Here are a couple of examples: kzbin.info/www/bejne/h5SpaaShf9F_acU , and kzbin.info/www/bejne/fpCyaaefhMuVe9E . Cheers, and have a great weekend, sir! 😉👍 --QM

Hi Quasi, thanks to your videos I convinced myself to buy a Super Cub 2018. I have done 500 miles, I weigh 170lbs and am 5'10" tall: top speed (flat, no wind and no slipstreaming) is 55mph 🙄 Should I still expect a speed increase in the future or something went wrong with the break-in? What accessories or modifications do you recommend to increase the top speed? Ideally I would like to add 6-8mph to feel safer on italian extra-urban roads. Also I would like to video document a small tour this summer and I really like the result you got in this video: do you use gopro? Where and with what did you attach it to your helmet? Thank you!
@QuasiMotard
@QuasiMotard Жыл бұрын
Howdy, and congratulations on your 2018 Super Cub! I noticed a slight improvement in top speed and efficiency after I added the Asahi Short Visor windscreen to my Cub. Here is my installation video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hV6TZ6xvjql_m8U (product links are in video description). It helps to break up the rider's silhouette in the wind and seems to give me an extra 3-4 mph top speed. My Cub's comfortable cruising speed is 53-58 mph, but it can reach 65+ on flat ground if I really push it hard. I also installed a 15T front sprocket that helped to lower the engine RPM at cruising speeds (also improved fuel economy by 10-15%). It doesn't necessarily improve the top speed because the engine power hasn't been upgraded as well. However, If I am traveling along with traffic and the disturbed airflow in front of me, then my Cub can easily reach 72+ mph because of the reduced air resistance. I don't think anything is "wrong" with your Cub or its original break-in... results vary among identical bikes. You might want to verifyt that your tire pressures are at least at the maximums listed on your swingarm (29/33 PSI or slightly higher for less rolling resistance). Also verify that your engine doesn't have too much oil, which can reduce efficiency and power due to crankcase windage (dragging too much of the crankshaft and piston connecting rod through the oil, causing frothing of the oil and extra resistance). The oil level should be in the middle of the sightglass when the oil is hot. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

Thank you for this very informative video. I did not know that the Super Cub was highway capable. But then again, I consider "highway-capable" to be about 70 to 75 mph and I don't think you rode beyond 55mph. I am considering buying a motorcycle I can ride to work on I-45 and I-10 in Houston. I was thinking of buying the Kawasaki KLR 650, the KTM RC390, or the Yamaha TMAX. But if I could safely ride the Super Cub on the freeway, then I would rather buy the Super Cub. It is cheaper and lighter, and very reliable.
@QuasiMotard
@QuasiMotard Жыл бұрын
I've ridden this little Cub all over the USA, but it's not really suitable as a freeway bike. It's capable of running 65-70 MPH, but only under ideal circumstances (e.g., on flat roads with no headwinds). Its comfortable cruising speed is closer to 50-55 MPH. I tend to stick to the side roads and rural highways. During commutes like this, I usually cheat the traffic lights and intersections on the feeder roads by doing quick "on and off" jaunts in the freeway merge lanes. It's a huge time saver as long as traffic isn't too fast or frantic. I commute with the Cub when traffic is heavy and moving slower than normal, so it's easy to keep up with the flow. Faster traffic during non-peak hours or extremely dense rush hour isn't ideal because of the inattentive cagers... lots of random lane changes and bumper biting. If you need to blend with faster traffic or commute mostly highway miles, then a 400cc or larger is the better option. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

Yep, I upgraded my SC to the Kitaco 15T (+1) sprocket just after I got the bike. The upgrade made the lower 3 gears more useful around town, and 4th gear feels more like an overdrive now. The other immediate benefit of the 15T sprocket was improved fuel economy by nearly 15% in most of my mixed city/highway commute duties. Howdy, Robert! The Super Cub was imported into the States from the late 50's thru the early 80's. Later models were known as the Passport C70, and Honda stopped importing them into the USA in 1984. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_Super_Cub If you don't like the heel-toe shifter, then you can replace the shift lever with a traditional toe lever... it's an easy swap. However, the heel shift allows for a smoother experience because the clutch disengagement is toed to the shift lever itself. It's easier to slowly raise/lower your heel than your toes for smooth clutch re-engagement. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

I have considered doing the wheel swap from the Trail to the Super Cub. That was part of my plan for a "FrankenCub" to run on the 2023 Scooter Cannonball Run. However, the swingarm would need to be changed or modified in order to accommodate the rear disc brake. I could probably swap swingarms and transplant the brake master cylinder and pedal assembly from the Trail without too much difficulty. Adrian has mentioned that he might sell his Cub, so I might snag it to hack up and modify into a "FrankenCub". I wouldn't want to mod my Cub too much... rather keep it original if possible. Howdy, Martin... haven't seen you here in a while! I still have that Kitaco/Nissin 2-piston caliper sitting in my Cub's project box! It's funny that you mention it, because I just spoke with Spiegler USA to get a custom 2-piece braided-stainless brake line for my Cub. I'm hoping to upgrade the front caliper, front pads, and brake lines on the Cub before I leave for the Scooter Cannonball Run in early June. The job won't be "easy" because the handlebar cover (nacelle) and the leg shield need to be removed in order to reach the master cylinder and body junctions for the brake lines. It's gonna be an involved tear-down to get in there. Of course, I'll try to record and share the entire process like I did with my first Cub tear-down ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/oWLVmmWQer1sgKs ). If I don't have time before the Cannonball, then I'll tackle that project after I return in late June. I'll be working with Spiegler USA for some other projects and hopefully some give-aways on my live streams! Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

What is the red tank between steering and seat, a spare fuel tank, wwhat make and where can I get one
@QuasiMotard
@QuasiMotard 4 ай бұрын
That red tank in the center is a jerry can. It's one of only two "Neil tanks" in existence! I have one on my Cub, and a friend of mine, Adrian, has the other one. Our buddy, Neil, custom fabricated those tanks and mounting cradles for us before we left on our 10K-mile cross-country trip for the 2021 Scooter Cannonball Run. They hold about 1.3 gallons of fuel, but they aren't plumbed into the main fuel supply. We used them as emergency fuel supplies and as transfer tanks during our extended road trip. You can see it in action here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hIrNnolte9Z_ha8 . If you're really interested in obtaining one of those, Neil might be persuaded to fabricate a few more (he mentioned that he still has the forms and welding jigs for the project). Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

I just installed the Asahi windshield today and I immediately noticed an increase in acceleration and a lot less wind from my neck down. How are you liking it?
@QuasiMotard
@QuasiMotard Жыл бұрын
Howdy, Wes! I really like the little Asahi screen! It seems to have improved the aerodynamics of my Cub, and both efficiency and top speed increased slightly as well. Airflow around the rider's pocket is smoothed out slightly, so I can usually gain 4-6 MPH when I duck down and put my helmet inline with the top edge of the windscreen. I did a LOT of that during the 10K-mile Scooter Cannonball Run trip: kzbin.info/www/bejne/a3nRpHl_dt9nbck . Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

No, I didn't lose any speed or efficiency. I think this Asahi Short Visor screen actually improves the aerodynamics a little bit by smoothing the airflow around the rider's pocket. A properly sized screen will usually improve efficiency if it's not too large. 😉👍 --QM

Howdy, Richard! The "rack" that I have on my Cub is actually a removable auxiliary fuel tank. That was fabricated by a friend of mine, Neil, so I've affectionately named it th3 "Neil tank". He made the top of the tank flat so I could use it as a shelf. I can also use the raised frame rails to strap down other items and a small magnetic tank bag on top of the metal tank. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

The gauge data is an overlay that I generate using a third-party program called Telemetry Extractor: goprotelemetryextractor.com/ . The telemetry data for the HUD is recorded by my GoPro Hero11 camera and my Garmin Zumo GPS (when I'm riding with it). I stitch everything together with Adobe Premiere Pro to create the final videos. It's a lot of extra work to create the overlays, but I think the end results are worth the effort. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

Have you considered cutting the engine off at some of those longer red lights? Save that extra drop of fuel.
@QuasiMotard
@QuasiMotard Жыл бұрын
That's a good point! I do kill the engine for some longer traffic lights or when I'm waiting for train crossings. I don't typically cut the engine unless I'm really hyper-miling because I don't want the extra wear and tear on the starter or battery. However, on my PCX150, I frequently start/stop that engine because the starter/alternator unit is tied directly to the crank (no extra motor or starter gears). The PCX150/160 in some markets outside of the USA have the engine start/stop feature built-in. Unfortunately, our legislators don't want us to be that efficient. 😉👍 --QM

Should I also put mid-grade fuel in my new Cub
@QuasiMotard
@QuasiMotard Жыл бұрын
I've been running base unleaded (87 PON here in Houston) in my Cub for most of its life. I occasionally treat it to mid (89) or high (91-93) grade if it has been sitting for a while or whenever the price/gal difference is negligible enough to not matter. Premium is at least $0.50/gallon more here, so that adds up in the long run. I've done extensive economy testing over my long road trips to compare different grades of fuel in the Cub, and the statistical spread is minimal. Under ideal conditions, I've seen mid- or high-grade yield only about 3-5 MPG higher than base unleaded. So, that doesn't offset the increased fuel cost/gallon at an average of 119-135 MPG. The Cub has a low-compression engine at 9.3:1 (2022 and later models bumped up to 10.0:1), so it can't take advantage of high octane fuels. Higher octane fuel is more resistant to detonation (pre-ignition due to heat/compression), so it's needed in high-compression engines. Otherwise, that higher octane can inhibit combustion and can slightly reduce efficiency compared to lower octane fuel. The primary benefit of running "premium" fuel is that it (sometimes) has more additive packages to keep the engine cleaner with less carbon build-up. I typically run base unleaded for 8-10 tanks, and then I'll run a couple of consecutive tanks blended with Sea Foam or Techron additives. This is cheaper in the long run, and it does a better job of cleaning out the injector and piston fouling... at least, that's how my "man math" justifies it! 😉👍 --QM

Why don't you opt for the premium? Cost can't be it. No chance of detonation going up hills.
@QuasiMotard
@QuasiMotard Жыл бұрын
The 2019 Super Cub has a low-compression engine (only 9.3:1), so it can't take advantage of higher octane fuels. Honda specifies 86 PON (pump octane number) or higher, so our 89 mid-grade exceeds that. I've done extensive highway tests with my Cub, and it doesn't seem to gain any performance or economy with premium (91-93) fuels. I have noticed a slight difference between 87 and 89, but it's very slight... only 1-3 MPG increase, which usually doesn't offset the higher fuel cost of $0.20-0.50/gallon. Premium fuels can offer additional detergents and lower deposits, so I offset the "cheaper" fuels by running a strong mixture of Chevron Techron or Seafoam for 2 consecutive tanks every 1000 miles or so. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

My father was an egineer in the Petroleum trade. There is ABSOLUTELY no benefit to higher octane if you have a low compression bike and have no carbon build up in the engine. Similarly, there is no benefit to using synthetic oil, if you don't run an extremely lean engine that causes extremely high temperatures.
@davehefterich3760
@davehefterich3760 Жыл бұрын
Well, it couldn't hurt either. In CA we only have 91 as our premium. With Wal-Mart fuel you never know it's parentage. In '97 I just bought a new F150 that started knocking with ARCO regular, switched to mid grade, same thing. Asked a fuel truck driver which brand he thought was best. Without hesitation he said Chevron. I asked him why. He said, they own the wells, refineries, and can control the product. The one thing that stuck, was that they make octane the right way, indicating that there was a wrong way? The ARCO way? I asked him about ARCO, he said he wouldn't put it in his lawnmower. Since then, I've used Chevron exclusively, no pings and no fuel filter issues.

@@davehefterich3760 You are right on that score. It does not hurt, except the wallet. My former wife drove a tanker in the summer and an LP rig in the winter for three years. She said that gas drops happen wrong quite frequently, where either a higher or lower grade is put into the wrong tank. I wonder if some of your woes could not be attributed to that, or just plain ol' bad gas with water in it. But if one is comfortable with the price difference, you are absolutely right that too high an octain is no problem of any sort. What I think is a good idea is to fill up with non-ethanol gas every five to ten fillups. Besides having a much higher calorific count, the "real" gas seems to clear up problems such as intake manifold clogs. :)

Yes, the Super Cub C125 is street-legal in all 50 US states, as far as I know. Some states have restrictions for minimum displacement for highway use. The general rule is 150cc's or larger displacement is required to operate on interstate highways, but there are no stipulations for state highways and rural roads. As long as you can maintain the minimum posted speeds (usually 40-45 mph, which permits agricultural equipment), then you're good. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM
