Might as well just read a book. In most cases, books are considered better than their movie adaptations, anyway. I would agree. But many movies (I don't know if this one was based on a book), like this one, are very good, even with a modest budget. It seems most modern science fiction movies are focused toward a large effects budget, with a story line as only an after thought, & so they don't hold my interest. I saw this movie when I was about 7 years old, & still think it's quite good, mainly for the plot & acting, but the effects were decent also, in my opinion.

@@shadovanish7435 No, it wasn't based on a book. It was based on an earlier BBC serial (mini series) by Nigel Neale. Although it has a smaller budget and is in black & white, in some ways the BBC version is better.

Yes, the quality of the story, the acting, the atmosphere etc. more than make up for the small budget. I would also recommend the original BBC TV serial from 1958. Black and white, even smaller budget, but just as brilliant. The serial is twice as long as the film, and gives the eerie atmosphere even more time to develop. The standout moment from the TV serial was when the Martian arthropods are discovered, and they're terrifyingly realistic. Must've scared the hell out of 1950s viewers, and it's famously renowned in the UK as one the scariest TV programmes ever made.

Saw this with my dad at home when I was about 10 yo back in '72 on our new Philco color TV. Exceptionally I was allowed to stay up late for the movie after our Hamburger Helper meal. The projection of the locust/Satan head scared the beans out of me. Movie stuck with me all these years.

This movie is a perfect example of a great film done on a small budget. The actors are top notch, the dialogue is superb and the story is fascinating. The movie generates tension that builds up until it's unbearable. If you want to get a good scare, this movie is it.

Also, the production design is great. Especially the London Underground set and the Martian spaceship design. The Martians themselves did look better in the BBC TV series though.

@ Wil manric They WERE trained for the stage at that time. Years in Rep before moving to screen. That's why we had a couple of generations of great screen actors through 70s and 80s. That system no longer exists I'm afraid. Can you really imagine a re-make of this with a cast of our present crop ...? ! ?

The last scene in the film when the crane destroys the "demon" has been burned into my bran for 50+ years. I was a child when I saw it on TV with my parents. It was only recently that I discovered that this was the film that scene was from.

The Beautiful Barbara Shelley was great in this. She also played Medusa, The Gorgon with consummate skill. Scared the living crap out of me when I was a kid.

One of the best sci-fi horror films ever, from a great writer teaming up with the best of British horror movie houses. The not entirely original idea that extra-terrestrials had visited earth long ago is given a fascinating twist with the notion that the visitors had altered the course of human development as a proxy method of contuning their own existence. How that retained memory and inate powers (which have become known as 'evil') can be reawakened is the central theme of this supreme piece of cinema.

With people in the town I'm moving out of tomorrow, people has shot killed poisoned and stabed people's animals, I kept thinking of this movie clip , and I thought of it today when a report came that someone tried to steal a neighbor dog by putting it up over a fence, The line from the movie stuck with me about they were killing the animals, and that ghostly Hob head rises up and even at the age of 60 ,it still looks scary!

(1:11) I have a theory that Colonel Breen (the officer that gets, well, essentially melted were he stood) is being used by the alien entities as a physical conduit that allows them to manifest as the giant "horned being" that appears later on. Just a thought. 😉

I’ll tell you the end loss of two minutes. (Spoiler) Quatermass gets the girl standing next to him as they both continue breathing heavily gathering their strength and composures thinking sadly about his friend, who climbs up a high tower crane to make it unbalanced so the end glided into the evil and GROUNDED it, as he and Quartermass both discovered how to destroy it.
