In this video I explain some of the security features of QubesOS and how you can combine it with a buskill laptop kill cord to get an even more secure browsing setup than TailsOS.

Windows xp sp2 is one of the worst ways to use your computer in 2024. You are likely vulrenable to at least 5000 critical vulreabilities and instantly get hacked by even the worst script kiddie or some python malware they write for fun. If you want to max out vulrenabilites and the absence of any security, Windows xp is a great choice. I hope it is sarcasm, people can’t be this dumb, right?

Whonix can be used in any Linux (Or Windows...) Which you use as normal every day OS. And is far easier to setup, use and maintain. It can also be used with a Mullvad VPN (Or ProtonVPN) like Qubes if you want. Plus you can use VeraCrypt container and put the Whonix OS inside there. Random change the password when done using and delete. Even on a SSD it will be a great pain to get anything back from that. Cresting multiple Veracrypt containers for daily or specific uses along with Live OS on Whonix makes it pretty solid. Qubes is still more secure. However for 90% of even privacy oriented users it is still far more of a pain to use. Even more so on older computers, where Whonix will work on PCs from 2014. Just a random example I swear. It comes down to a few things. Ease of use? Tails-Whonix-Qubes in that order. Same for older hardware to run it is Tails-Whonix-Qubes. Security wise it goes Qubes-Whonix-Tails if you plan to ever download anything or open any iffy random links. So to me for the all rounder the option is Whonix. Any one with different thoughts?
@IlIlIIlIlIllI
@IlIlIIlIlIllI Ай бұрын
The ease of use for Qubes increases after setting it up how you like and using it, I have used Qubes daily for about a year now and it much simpler than windows for my applications. I can't play video games or watch 4k videos that's about it for the downsides.

@Brian2
@Brian2 Ай бұрын
@@IlIlIIlIlIllI "after setting it up" is a qualifier here. More so for those that don't want to deep dive, remember I said the majority of people. My bet is the two of you are not in fact part of that 90%. As an example I have used Linux for years now, upgrade my own hardware and am a regular on various privacy sites. On top of that I enjoy testing out random distros both in VM and bare bones. Despite all that Qubes is still annoying to setup and only very recently would it even run correctly on my PC as it was an older one. The color coded banners help but the fact it is needed at all to be workable is a sign of how difficult it can be to use for new users. Remember, I am not talking about "Oh after spending dozens of hours and months working on it is Simple!". I'm talking about getting new and mid level users like myself to bother with the headache to learn in the first place. With Whonix and Tails it isn't needed unless you are either very paranoid, very curious or very much in over your head be it legal or not.

I say in theory cause I have never tried it myself, seems more complicated than doing a KVM/QEMU GPU Passthrough and I feel the performance might not be the best but it's doable. maybe something like a corebooted system76 laptop running QubesOS with a gaming Qube and all the other Qubes would be the perfect setup for privacy and security for many.

Tails is a live-only OS, which means you can't install it and no data is saved when you use it. Whonix is an easy way to force all your traffic to go through Tor. Think of it as a Tor VPN client Qubes is an OS that is meant to be installed, has whonix installed by default (but you can turn it on and off) and runs every program in a completely different virtual machine for the sake of isolation (e.g. if your Firefox gets hacked it only infects that one VM and your email client is safe)

I actually used this as a daily driver for about a year and a half. Definitely not for the people that want things to just work out of the box. Much like Linux newbies coming over from Windows, you must understand that there are things you can do on Linux easily which requires a bit of tinkering and a lot of reading to get working on Qubes. Some things I just could not get working and had to do without or replace with something else. It also is a huge power suck. Would not recommend for the average user, but if security is top priority, you can't go wrong with Qubes. I have massive respect for their work and hope some of their ideas get picked up by more mainline distros.

@@JPs-q1o SSH is disabled, so no problem there, IP stack yes, but qubes would also be ducked here, because the traffic is still received and then passed to the vm, bash also shouldn't be a problem, because bash isn't accessible by the network, if there is no command injection in the browser, which is very unlikely in my opinion.

All the while you are going thru all this trouble, every Intel and AMD chip manufactured since 2006 has the NSA backdoor “Minix on a chip” lying in wait for activation remotely. In runs on Ring -3 and runs a web server, full access to your memory (RAM / disk), a full access to the TCP/IP stack, and your keyboard *prior* to encryption.

3:20 Qubes isn't saying the Xen is smaller KVM. Because dom0 typically ranges from 200 MB to 500 MB but not in Qubes. But because dom0 is external to the kernel it can be loaded in a pruned down state so they can seperate and check features and services concerns. The Linux kernel's hardware virtualization (Intel VT-x, AMD-V) with Alpine (eg docker containers) is even smaller than dom0 but is problematic because it is also more integrated. Also KVM directly from the CPU only runs on processors that supports x86 hvm (vt/svm instructions set) whereas Xen also allows running modified operating systems on non-hvm x86 processors (eg Arm CPUs) using paravirtualization. A lot of people want Alpine instead of dom0's rpm boot but the developers are waiting until all inputs are containerised before building a sysgui and discussing change.

Anyone ever realize from a fingerprinting perspective that all of these measures you take actually makes you stick out like a sore thumb instead of blending in with the masses? Anti-fingerprinting is not about being anonymous, it's about blending in. The only person in a crowd wearing a mask is very easy to track, even if you can't see who they are. What they don't know about you can be just as unique or more than what they do know.
@zehph

That depends on how the browser you use is setup, if you use firefox with minimal hardening for clear web browsing you won't look too different from the other 3% of the users rocking firefox. For the dark web browser you shouldn't mess with its settings, just use the thor browser as is and you should blend in as well. Also there are some extensions that randomize the info passed for fingerprinting parameters, if you want to go that route, so even if you stick out it would only last that session, then you can restart your gateway to get a different exit node, or if you don't want to route your clear net traffic through Thor you could use mullvad and switch servers when you want to clear your session.
