Only a free and pure-minded person, on the verge of death, experiencing severe pain and the realization of the hopelessness of his position, could see the beauty of this world and create such wonderful songs as Winter's tale. For me, on November 24, 1991, unfortunately, Farukh Bulsara died, it is very sad, but this is life. But he left behind - Freddie Mercury - a unique image in pop culture, unlike anyone else, who will never die, because legends live forever.

Can you begin to imagine being so close to death and being able to write and sing a song? Most of today’s singers could never reach this level of beauty and quality on their best day. Brian’s playing on the song was like another voice. What an inspiration Freddie is.

Beautiful, lovely, peaceful song, written and recorded in a time when Freddie knew, he didn't have much time left. So it surely also comprises a bit of transcendence. After his last stay in Montreux back in London he decided to skip all meds except of painkillers. He willingly gave up on some other weeks or days, he stopped fighting the unstoppable, to obtain some peace in his last weeks. RIP Freddie! When I listen to this song, I recognize that the vocal harmonies sound... different. Because Freddie's voice is missing in there. Of course the others did what they could, and they did it very well.

And yes, you are right, the Red Special was crying for him, it lost a very close friend, someone that would (and is) be missed forever. And the fire piano, his soul-mate was gone, so it had no reason to keep on playing...maybe...who knows? And John Deacon is not with Roger and Brian because after Freddie's death he considered that the heart and soul of Queen had died, gone. He actually said, "What's the point of having a Ferrari in the garage if there is no one to drive it?" And he left. For John, there could only be Freddie as Queen frontman. Period. And I totally agree with him. Of course Queen music continues, it's too amazing not to, and there can be other singers colaborating with Brian and Roger, but there can not be another Queen frontman. Sorry, in that I'm inflexible. That is why even Adam Lambert is a good singer, that he is, he is not Queen, he just is not. Never.

He was in Switzerland at their studio because they didn’t hound him there. It’s the last song Freddie wrote by himself. He was looking out the window at the gorgeous scenery and came up with this. The writing on the video is his handwriting from the scrap papers he jotted the song on. It’s a beautiful song. He sang it to a drum beat knowing he wouldn’t last long enough for the music to be added. Heartbreaking, however, shows his love for his music. Hard to believe it’s been 29 years. He’s still with us though. The Red Special was crying. Brian and Roger had a very difficult time putting the Made in Heaven album together sitting in the studio listening to Freddie singing out of the Amps. The burning might represent the fact it was the last song Freddie wrote before he died. By the way, Brian has Freddie’s piano in his home. He mentioned in a documentary that he treasures it and is so happy he has it. His love of his life, Mary, got the lion share of his estate including his home and his share of royalties. They had been together before Queen was Queen. There’s another great song on Innuendo called Don’t Try So Hard that’s awesome.

Yes..he wrote it and composed the music in the Duck House where he stayed in Montreux in 1991. Recorded I would say before Mother's love which he sung his last lyric in May 1991 before he never came back. So This had to have been recorded before May 1991 6 months or more prior to his death.

Thanks for this, Hap. It's a beautiful song to mark the 29th year of Freddie's passing. Freddie was very lucky to be surrounded by friends when he passed. There was a lot of stigma about AIDS at the time and some people died alone. I read that Freddie helped people that lost their jobs due to illness and couldn't pay their mortgage or rent. He was a very generous and soft-hearted person. Freddie's boyfriend Jim, his chef and ex Joe Fanelli and his PA Peter Freestone all lived at Garden Lodge and Mary visited every day even though she had a toddler and was pregnant with her second child. Freddie had a lot of people that loved him. 💛

It was the last song Freddie wrote and he recorded the vocals & it was indeed the music & the composition was finished off & released on Made in Heaven after he died. Mother love was the last song Freddie recorded in May 1991. He left because he was tired...having not finished it...and he never went back....hence Brian had to sing the last verse. AS daedala mentioned, there is a wonderful photo of Freddie's "song writing scribble book" on a table on the terrace of his beautiful flat he bought with Jim Hutton shortly before he died. They decorated it together.. They never got back there again sadly. Jim said in his book Freddie wanted a photo of them waking around the lake which they did mostly daily, but they didn't have a camera with them & Freddie died before they ever took one. Jim said it is his biggest regret. Imagine that THAT bothered him so much. Freddie initially rented what's known in Switzerland as The Duck House, a lovely little lakefront home (pix are available) . Since Lake Geneva is filled with swans & ducks, Roger jokingly called the lakefront rental house DUCKINGHAM PALACE 🦢 🦆 🦤... Freddie loved the tranquility so then bought the flat on the top floor of another residence on the lake ... there's a beautiful photo of Freddie on that terrace in a light blue suit, very tranquil but also sad knowing what little time they got to enjoy it.. I often wonder did Mary get that place too. Though Freddie once sat in the yard of Garden Lodge, with both Jim & Mary, he stated, perhaps faciously, "You should bury me here in my garden so I can keep an eye on you all"., he did also once say he would only tell Mary. where to put his ashes because "I don't want anyone digging me up !!" So I often wonder wouldn't it make sense if he asked her to spred his ashes over Lake Geneva which he adored for its tranquility...as you can hear in this song... just wishful thinking on my part since his monument is at the Lake as well as the Queen Museum. Such a sad Anniversary 😥 but thank you, HAP, for taking the time to do this video for this anniversary. Your admiration & love for Freddie is apparent .
