I was also 12. My brother and I shared a room with bunk beds. I was on top bunk and he would play 'A Night At The Opera' every night before we went to sleep on his little Panasonics tape recorder, the kind with the rattly pull-out handle. A couple of years later he'd progressed to punk but I remained a lifelong Queen fan and was lucky enough to see them live in Birmingham NEC in Dec 1980.

you need to put this in perspective, back when they recorded this they were already famous enough so that production value went right where it needed to be for the most expensive equipment and studios to be used. If you listen at earlier records (like "keep yourself alive) you can tell a huge difference within only a few years worth from the original album. I saw the Queen documentary, and I seem to recall learning that this was done when studios first started having 24-track recording, and it was a challenge for the engineer to mix a song with so many vocals. Back in the day, multitrack recordings were done on a reel of tape 2 inches thick and had room for up to 24 tracks, and the tape you see here is 1/4 inch and has 2 tracks for the 2 stereo channels. In the 21st century, the whole thing is done on a computer with a digital audio workstation (DAW), and you either copy the final mix to a CD or just make an mp3 of the mix and send it out to do whatever you want with it.
@gadaffi1000 Жыл бұрын
The original recording was done on 2" WIDE tape (not THICK!!). This ¼" tape in the video would be one of the final mix tapes. The recording of multi vocals etc wouldn't be restricted to 24 tracks because you could record say 8 multi-vocal tracks and then move that recording over to one or two tracks of the 24, hence freeing up more space. A drum kit could easily take up 8 tracks on its own. My knowledge is limited to the short time I was employed at Air studios in Oxford Circus back in the late 70's where I was lucky enough to sit next to George Martin as well as work on The Cars first album and a Blondie single, so I am happy to be corrected.
@jeopardy60611 Жыл бұрын
@@gadaffi1000 my apologies. I once heard a recording engineer call the multitrack master a thick tape. That is so true that you can “bounce” tracks to free them up for other things, but if you do, you can no longer adjust their sound separately.

@@whitesapphire5865 ..well, as we are all listening to this analog masterpiece through 128kbps AAC encoding/decoding , his comment is actually en pointe. The way to enjoy this recording at it's best is directly from the Nagra T's line output, through an analog Class A audio amplifier into decent Studio monitor (non-colouring) speakers. Listening to it on KZbin and your Laptop or Smartphones is a very poor substitute, akin to listening to the CD imo.

That is not the true "master" tape playing here. The machine shown was only a two-track device, so what is playing here is at best a stereo copy taken from the original master.

You hear that this is really tape compressed and saturated by being bounced and pushed hard onto different tape machines. Not a first gen by any means. (And pushed hard onto the multi track from the beginning)

nice t-audio. my first job in london was with a broadcast facility which was part of the trilion group, & we had the 2" *video* masters in our library. one day, about two weeks before FM died, I got a request from the sheffield brothers to book them all out & send them round to st ann's court, their HQ. I remember looking at BR in particular- we didn't have a 2" vtr to play it on, as they were largely obsolete by this time, & in any case there were already multiple broadcastable copies of it in many libraries. no, they just wanted the stuff where they could see it, & pretty soon we all knew why 😞 the record report in the box told me that it had been edited by john turner, at the time still on the periphery of the trilion operation, & that the colour bars/tone at the head of the tape had been extended by splicing more on, presumably because the frayed end was being lopped off periodically- 2" videotape's ends being prone to fraying as they rewound. the stems for the final mix are out there in google-land, though if you do find them & play with them, note that it is mostly second generation & that there are some bounces, because they almost wore through the original 2" audio tape & in any case ran out of tracks.

EMI used to service British radio stations with tapes on request, usually for longer songs which suffered from distortion on vinyl. Kenny Everett used to make a point of announcing it, and they didn’t count toward the BBC’s needletime quota. Most of those presumably ended up being discarded.
