@@chloedassler6156 Yeah, I see what he means.… however, I think the video does add another layer of meaning to the song. Quite a few Hot Space songs have videos which seem to expand on the song content. I wonder if this wasn't a failing of the albim to some extent, in that without the videos, the songs perhaps don't stand up so well. At least, the songs don't seem to achieve the vision as shown in the clips attached to them. To an extent, sound and vision are rarely precisely the same, but might the band not have been relying a little too much on video to fill in the songwriting blanks on Hot Space? I like the album a lot all the same, but I know that it lost a lot of people too…

Yes, I know. I just meant to say that Brian wasn't as into the whole disco/80's pop as the rest of the band was. Of the songs May wrote, Put out the Fire is definitely not disco, and Las Palabras de Amor is a traditional Queen ballad. I did not consider Dancer, however. I guess that would be an exception.
@Kohntarkosz8 жыл бұрын
You know it's funny you mention that, I always wondered about that shot of the band toward the end of the video, where Dr. May looks like he's on the verge of cracking up. It's like that was the closest they could get to having him keep a straight face. I also love what Roger said on the Greatest Video Hits audio commentary, when they're talking about this video: "Uh oh, getting dangerously close to acting here!".

@liliano42865 жыл бұрын
I don't know why Brian and Roger and so many other people disliked this video. The video makes *perfect* sense to me. Videos aren't meant to be literal interpretations of songs, but even as a literal interpretation of the song, this video *works perfectly*, in my opinion. And I think the fact that Freddie is the one locked up is even more meaningful and adds a layer of subtle and creative depth that the average Queen fan at the time was probably not even tuned in to. What I get from this video: This is a song that's telling people to be free, (a theme that's echoed again much later in Innuendo- *Be free, be free, surrender your ego, be free be free to yourself, You can be anything you want to be...*). It's urging people ("calling all boys/girls/around the world) to be individual and not to conform, it's telling them to love freely, love who you love, think freely, the message is love, the message is freedom. Freddie/Freddie's character tries to live his life that way going about his business (in real life this is also when Freddie is getting more and more comfortable with his sexuality, he cuts his hair and adopts the new mustache "gay clone" look, expressing his gayness more openly and freely). For this act of self expression and individuality, he is attacked by the robots (just like the media and Queen fans turned on him for his mustache and his new look criticizing him because he didn't look the way they were used to). Freddie tries to fight back but is immediately forced into a cage (of conformity) by the robots (Queen fans / society in general). His bandmates/friends arrive and unlock the cage (acceptance of Freddie for who he is). As they all escape, Freddie takes a moment destroys all the equipment around (aka Freddie's continuous refusal to conform to expectations or norms of who and what he's supposed to be, refusal to even give interviews starts around this time, but also represents Queen's refusal to be what fans expect them to be) and they all walk out free. Makes perfect sense. Smart, clever, nuanced, fun and totally appropriate to the song. And makes me love the song even more. Again, Queen was way ahead of their time with this concept.
@TheaterPup5 жыл бұрын
Ironically the whole point of the clone look was that you looked like everyone else in the community. Hence why it was called "clone" - kinda the opposite of individual.

@@chicochi3yeah it feels in some ways queen were "forced" to keep with the changing times to stay relevant so they made an attempt at a disco album which may have its faults, but it definitely has some great songs on it! this is such a stellar upfliting new wave rock song ... by my favourite band with an homage to one of my favourite movies!! [THX1138] ... Amazing musicians are extra-amazing when they can also hold themselves back, to focus on the song. Earlier Queen tended to fill the gaps with clever decorations whereas on this 'Hot Space' album they held back on that and gave the songs more space; like on the earlier 'Another one bites the dust" ... From being 'maximalist' to going 'minimalist', all part of their genius.

I love the part at 1:13 with Freddie sitting next to the girl and the tv monitor says "illegal mate" Gotta love their cheekiness and sense of humor!

the song and album rocks, I don't give a shit what soulless critics think.
@cineman34636 жыл бұрын
But what about longtime fans (that is, if you really count yourself as one, at least partially) who were still very dissapointed? They're not always professional "critics". At least you could undestand some of their problems with the album.

@@cineman3463 I became a fan long after Freddie died sadly due to when I was born. Why did fans at the time hate it so much?
@cineman34636 жыл бұрын
Mainly because they had to change their style to fit the pop standards of that time. Most of the album was synth-based and fans didn't like that. I understand artists have to "renovate" all the time, but many of the songs sounded like every early 80s pop song; they felt like they were written rushedly, without much "inspiration" or not even put a spin or trademark on it.
