Catherine was so underrated. She literally won a battle WITHOUT Henry, and just because she didn't give birth to a living son (She actually bore a son but he died, he wasn't healthy), so HENRY didn't even have validation she couldn't birth sons. SHE COULD, they just didn't live to see it, because they died soon after. He didn't even help her see Mary on her deathbed, that's just savage, and Henry is terrible for that. King Henry literally insulted and violated Mary's freedom and her gender by saying "Oh, my wife was childless because I married her when she was my brother's widow" when he had a perfectly healthy daughter and forced her to sign the annulment papers. What a messed up, arcanely torturous man. I'd say that Queen Catherine was one of the best, if not THE best, of Henry's wives.

Neither of Henry’s “healthy” sons lived past their teen years. Also The battle Katherine fought against Scotland likely caused her premature labor in that pregnancy. Henry’s parents were third cousins and Katherine’s parents were first cousins, so the inbreeding probably didn’t help. Katherine's parents were SECOND cousins. ALL of Henry VIII's wives were descended from Edward I (Henry III's son); in fact 3 of his wives (Katherine of Aragon, Jane Seymour and Katherine Parr) were more closely related, they were descended from King Edward III (the two Katherine's via Prince John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster.)

Anne of Cleves was descended from Beatrice of England, Edward I’s sister. The rest were directly descended from Edward I. Since Henry III was the father of both Edward and Beatrice, all six of Henry Wives were descended from him, which is why I used him as the direct ancestor when I said all.

Thank you for this very lovely portrayal of Catherine of Aragon. A couple of notes: The first portrait you show of young Catherine is disputed; it is more likely one of Catherine's older sisters. Catherine did command the Battle of Flodden but did not actually ride into battle. Young Arthur's boast is not contemporary with Arthur. It was entered as testimony during the Annulment, more than 2 decades later, from biased and pressured witnesses and is therefore to be taken with a grain of salt. One of the main reasons that the death of Isabel was a disaster for Catherine is that Fernando's power was more than halved: he was king consort in Castile, and Isabel's death meant he lost all legal authority in Castile to Juana and Philip the Handsome. Fernando battled and schemed his way back to power, but this was not a foregone conclusion, and with Fernando king only of Aragon and parts of Italy, Catherine's stock as a bride was also much reduced. The portrait you show at the point of Henry preparing to propose to Catherine is actually of Juana. The pomegranate is also the symbol of Granada (which translates into "pomegranate") and therefore was of additional significance to Catherine. The wearing of yellow remains ambiguous; in Spain executioners did, at times, wear yellow, but it's worth noting that, in Spain, when someone of importance died, the colors of mourning most often referenced are white and black. Thank you again for this sympathetic and thoughtful portrait of Catherine.

Thank you so much for your clarifications. Although Isabel of Castile *did* lead her troops in battle, her daughter Catherine did not. Catherine was still one resilient & intelligent queen, regardless of her abstention from battlefields.

The health condition Henry likely had doesn't mean you can't have boys, it just makes it much less likely and the boys that do result from the marriage are more likely to have health issues. It's a great shame that despite her strong connections to other powerful European leaders they ultimately turned their backs on her. I’ve heard it’s likely that Mary had endometriosis which caused her chronic pelvic pain and horrible periods. If that’s the case, it’s highly likely that Catherine had it too which could definitely explain the miscarriages and infertility.
@KG-ds2fj3 жыл бұрын
Yes she had,and other health problems(Mary)
@Alejojojo63 жыл бұрын
It is unlikely, because her mother Isabella of Castile was very fertile and didnt suffer from Endometriosis. It is also unrecorded if she had period-pain. Mary however was recorded to suffer such pain, maybe comming through X chromosome inherited from Henry VIII
@robynballew57923 жыл бұрын
@@Alejojojo6 Surprisingly, there’s no correlation between severity of disease and fertility status. My grandma, my mother and I all have endometriosis; my grandma had no fertility issues whatsoever, my mother had a couple miscarriages and four complete pregnancies and I am completely infertile (post hysterectomy status after five miscarriages).
@Alejojojo63 жыл бұрын
@@robynballew5792 Endometriosis is linked with fertility problems. That is a fact (i work in the medical field) that said, it doesnt mean that you cant have children. You can have but usually is more difficult and ectopic pregnancies (and miscarriages) are more likely as well
@robynballew57923 жыл бұрын
@@Alejojojo6 bruh I work in healthcare as well as live with endometriosis, I definitely don’t need it mansplained 🤣🤣 reread what I said: there’s no correlation between SEVERITY OF DISEASE (endometriosis) and fertility status. As in, you can have advanced stage four lesions and not have an issue with fertility, or you could have minor stage one lesions and be totally infertile. It comes down to how your body responds to the inflammation that endometriosis creates. Again, just because Catherine didn’t have obvious major fertility struggles does not preclude a diagnosis of endometriosis.

@@napoleonbonaparte7529 We actually aren't sure which of the daughters the portrait is; I would venture to say, based on the straight nose and the serious expression that it is more likely to be Juana than Catherine (who seems to have a charming little tilt at the end of her nose). Even more likely, to me, based on portraits of Juana done in Flanders, this portrait may be young Isabel or Maria. If either of them, perhaps more likely to be Isabel jr. It’s actually so unfair that Catherine is so underrated compared to Anne Boleyn. Like I used to like Anne, but now I realize she was no good by ruining Catherine’s marriage. Since she was 3, her destiny was set in stone, and just once it was set into motion, Arthur dies. Imagine having waited so long and put in so much work for something, just for it to almost quickly backfire upon you. All that travel, servants, soldiers and everything that was done to bring Catherine to England all went to waste once Arthur died and left her as a widow. Her only choice was to marry Henry because if you think about it, she’s wasted money that was sent with her to live in England because when she was cast out of the castle after being a widow, she had to use her own money for survival. Still Catherine, didn’t let her efforts go to waste, she didn’t want Isabella de Castile, her so honored mother’s wishes to go to waste as well. The alliance between Spain and England is crucial and Catherine was the key. She was not going back to Spain after all this effort so she waited and fought for the throne and to finally wed Henry. After finally becoming Reina de Inglaterra, Catherine is not happy even now. She is out under the constant pressure to produce male heirs and is constantly victim to her husband displaying infidelity. Finally, she was cast out once Margaret Pole confesses that Catherine lied about the legitimacy of her marriage to wed Henry. Even after being cast out, Catherine still survived as queen in the people’s hearts. Unlike Boleyn, Bessie, or any of the other people after her, Catherine was a true warrior queen, La cierta reina de Inglaterra, she went into battle while pregnant with her baby for her country, and she even funded and fought for female education at such an early time period when mysoginy was at its greatest. Overall, Catherine is irreplaceable and she really truly is the true queen of England.

Catherines accomplishments as a diplomat, regent, and war general are astounding. She did it all while proving naysayers wrong because of her gender. What an astounding life. I celebrate her for that. I do find it gross that folks claim she was the queen of peoples hearts ... Bur where were those people when she needed the advocacy? Even during the trial for her marriage she defended herself. I know monarchies power is absolute, but these mofos behead a dynasty every few decades... And couldn't stand up and support the queen they all supposedly loved? Its just so gross .. queens like marie antionette were literally picked apart to death by public perception, and she just minded her business, but society just stood by and let Catherine be dragged through the mud. Its not a tragedy, its a choice. A choice we as humans made to let this amazing queen down.

I live in Peterborough, the city where Catherine of Aragon is buried. She is buried at the cathedral in the city centre. I used to visit the cathedral with my mother and grandmother when I was young. However, one day we went to visit the cathedral, and as soon as we walked through the doors, there was an instant sense of dread and misery. It was one of the most unpleasant feelings I've ever experienced. The atmosphere just felt wrong. About 5 minutes later, we found out that they were moving her grave, as a result of doing some maintenance work. Ourselves and others had to leave the cathedral as the feeling was so overbearing. By far one of the most unpleasant experiences I've ever had.

Some Factual errors with the pictures depicted during this presentation (interesting none the less): * A portrait depicted as Katherine - is actually Juana the Mad Queen of Castile * 10:23 - that is not the Pope, it's almost certainly Cardinal Wosley * The portrait of the baby Prince Henry who died in infancy - is in fact a portrait of another royal baby, above the portrait it states it was painted c.1606
