I think as soon as she was sent to France, her fate was sealed. Scotland, from what I can read was a damn complicated political animal than those of France and England - there's a reason why her son, James, wanted to become King of England so badly - at least he knew that England was a bit bit easier to manage than the clusterfuck that was Scotland's political arena. Scotland requires someone astute and well versed with how all the many - MANY clans work in that country, a deft mind to handle the fickle and precarious nature of its nobility. Unfortunately for Mary, she was raised in France, which had a different method of ruling and a different type of culture. The fact that she chose *poorly* for her second husband and was forced into a shit marriage to Bothwell scuttled whatever chances she got. What frustrates me was that some of her choices were baffling - what made her think Elizabeth would be inclined to help her when Mary spent her time in Scotland claiming she was THE ONLY LEGITIMATE HEIR TO ENGLAND and called Elizabeth was an bastard usurper many times after. I was just - gurl, GURL please think. Who were your advisors?????

@@Nixconvie I love LOVE this comment because it goes to the absolute heart of the matter. Mary is to be pitied because she was raised for one life and purpose and her mother-in-law truly was awful to her, throwing her back to Scotland, a country she didn't even know or understand. The French court had been child-centric and she'd been loved and secure all of her years there, and she relied on her charm to win her way through life. She'd have been just fine if her beloved French husband had lived.

For those who are saying that Mary had the last laugh, Elizabeth was well aware that her Tudor Lineage will end through her as she had no husband to have a child. Elizabeth also expected James to be her successor as after Mary’s execution, James was first in line for the throne. Elizabeth’s main goal was to enhance the Protestant Establishment of England and we know that through Mary’s son, James became King and was a Protestant. So clearly Elizabeth kinda did have the last laugh either way

I feel like her downfall was a combination of naïveté and rich life of becoming a queen at 6 days old and living in a French court where she had everything provided for as well as being so focused on claiming England. She returned to a country that didn’t know her and didn’t like her. But instead of focusing on them, she set her sights on England which caused her to marry Darnley to make the English claim even stronger. I think she had the potential to be a good if not great Queen had she focused on Scotland.... but her marriage essentially torpedoed any chance of English and even her own Scottish throne.

Through Lord Darnley, there was a claim to the English throne. He was the son of Margret Douglas; she was the daughter of Margret Tudor Queen of Scotland. Margret Tudor was the daughter of Henry VII of England. Her marriage to Darnley didn't torpedoed any change of English or her own Scottish throne. What torpedoed her Scottish throne was the forced third marriage to the Earl of Bothwell. Mary was forced to abdicate in favor of her infant son James.

It depends if you think the long-game is blood-lineage or religion. In the case of the former, she won out, but only due to her loss on the later. She never got to raise James & as a result he was raised Calvinist (which for Mary was a deep cut). James' Protestantism made him an acceptable successor to Elizabeth('s ministers). A position he was so eager to attain that he let Mary be extra-legally executed w/out raising much of a fuss. Not that Mary did much to earn any better, frankly. She was a woman in a tough position but she never learned to play it very well.

I'm not sure how 'French' a 16th Century French accent would sound, however. Henry himself signed his name as "Henry" rather than the modern French "Henri" & his father Francis spelled his name completely differently from the modern French *or* English spelling (English: Francis; Modern French: François; Middle French: *Francoys*). Metropolitan French accent is the product of the language reforms implemented by the Bourbon monarchs (& I'm sure Napoleon had 'more than one finger in the game' to use a Danish expression). The Valois lived b/f any of these, so how their 'Parisian' French sounded could be anybody's guess (I'm sure an actual French linguist knows, but I don't). I know in earlier Medieval French a lot of the letters that are presently silent were then fully voiced & pronounced. Plus, while contractions did exist, they weren't noted w/ an apostrophe (causing no end of confusion to later readers).

If you look deeper into the life of Mary, some of your assertions are inaccurate. Mary never ‘fell in love’ she was brutally raped by Bothwell and forced against her will to marry him because of his quest for power. Her half brother was primarily responsible for plotting the murder of Darnley she had no part in this. Elizabeth's jealously over Mary's beauty was very apparent. More so that Elizabeth used her power to eventually destroy Mary. This is the ultimate sign of weakness being driven by envy. Elizabeth lived a life riddled with guilt after Mary's execution. Even if Mary never was claimed the English throne, history has accorded her story as one of great interest in ruling monarch's.

I don't think so. Mary was never very well-liked in Scotland, & she was even less liked in England (the feeling was mutual in both cases). Scotland was already Calvinist by the time she returned as an adult for her personal rule, & this set off alarm bells almost immediately; there was always the chance Mary could institute a counter-Reformation like Mary I of England did. Mary also had no direct experience of government, either. Her reign in Scotland was mostly a non-event punctuated by stupid decisions Mary made to dig herself deeper. Anyone could have told her Darnley would have made a bad husband, but she didn't listen. When she finally learned that herself, she needed to ditch him, & murder was her chosen solution. But that still left the Queen a murder. To make matters worse, the marries one of the guys assumed to be a co-conspirator *in* said murder. Darnley probably deserved it, but there were better & smarter ways of getting rid of him than the one she chose, & she was already on thin-ice due to being a Catholic anyway. Long story short she was run out of the kingdom & for the most part the Scots were happier for it; since the declaration of Arbroath they reserved the right to replace their king if they didn't like him, so there was nothing technically illegal going on regarding her deposition anyway. Elizabeth executing her extralegally was a non-event in Scotland, since they already had a new monarch by then anyway, & James (being a Protestant male descended from Henry VII) was willing to let the murder of his mother slide if it meant becoming King of England (which worked out pretty well for him). Sure, *Catholics* were unhappy w/ how Mary was treated, but most Protestants in both kingdoms couldn't care less.

Although it had beautiful young people acting in the roles, it was not entirely true but did include actual events. It fudged a lot. @@brettlarch8050 But if everyone is religious & also, *coincidentally* violent, then how can you tell the religion & violence are not merely correlated, & not causated? I'm an atheist, but I have a feeling that we'd find just as many horribly violent ways to murder & torture ppl. as religious ppl. did if the need arose. Edward Longshanks, Philip IV of France, & the Catholic monarchs did horribly idiotic & terrible things to their Jewish populations (actions I do not condone, & indeed find reprehensible in every case). But Philip IV did it for money, Edward Longshanks did it for the political prestige &... well, I don't know enough about Castile & Aragon to speak about Ferdinand & Isabella, so I'll just leave it at that. Did Christianity's hatred of Judaism make these actions *easier* (in that they were more easy to justify & more acceptable to the political elite of those places)? I think so. But you also have Christian leaders tolerating Jews in this period as well; it's Puritanical Oliver Cromwell who invites the Jews back to England. & Polish King Casimir III strictly forbid anyone from attacking Poland's Jews during his reign. Not to mention that you have Christians murdering Jews while on the way to the Crusades & Christian Bishops trying to *protect* those same people & prevent the violence. It's a lot more complicated than just religion=bad.

Yeah...that wasn't Elizabeth actually being shocked though. She did that whole bit on purpose. She knew it would get used once she signed it, but she must have felt like they had her over a barrell: she had come to be convinced she had to execute Mary, but none of her old worries about the consequences had gone away. She signed it, then told her secretary not to use it specifically so that, when he did, as she knew he would, she could claim innocence and lay the whole thing at her councilors feet. Most of them were shocked and hurt as she signed the damn thing, what did she think that meant would happen? But William Cecil knew her better. In letters he tells acquaintances that he privately called her out on it.

In reading so many comments, it amazes me at the amount of vitriol thrown in Elizabeth's direction. One needs to consider the amount of religious upheaval going on at this time, thanks in large part to Scotland's relationship with England. Mary managed to alienate most of her most powerful lords - she was just not up to the task of pitting one against the other and keeping them guessing. Most of this can be a result of her pampered upbringing in France - Elizabeth had no such cherishing. Then add in her poor skills at reading men and picking the absolute worst choice of a husband in Darnley. I always felt badly for her, but she was not prepared for the world - and the reality - she found in Scotland.

I just love the story of Mary Queen of Scots. Such an intriguing story, where she had everything, and was Queen of France as a teenager with her whole life ahead of her. She then progressively lost everything bit by bit, always trying to recapture her former blessed life, until she lost her head at the end of a cold war between herself and her cousin Elizabeth who had no children and ended the Tudor dynasty. If she knew today, that she and not Elizabeth was the direct ancestor of not only the British King, (Scotland and England to her) but all the European monarchs in Europe, she would be smiling.

Man, it kind of seems like a dick move to not only deny her request to be buried in France (which I get, I'm sure it may have been too expensive considering she was convicted of treason), but to then give her a Protestant funeral when she was Catholic to the end!!! Thats just cruel

funnily enough, James's prediction became true, not through Mary, but through Anne over a century later, as she was the last of the Stuarts and the one who signed the England and Scotland union.

The portrait of Marie Antoinette shown around the 1:00 timestamp has always intrigued me! When placed next to other likenesses of her as a very young woman, the details this artist managed to capture are really spectacular, and so lifelike. I have no idea who the artist is or if this is a contemporary portrait the young, soon-to-be, ill-fated queen the she actually sat for. The medium used seems unique as well--while most depictions of her are done with oil paints, this appears (to my un-trained eye) to be a watercolor...🤔🤔🤔 Do any art experts out there know more about this portrait of our tragic queen? 👑👨‍🎨🇫🇷🧁

"My Heart is My Own" by Prof. John Guy (2004) is a must-read to understand the crux of Elizabethan politics shaped by the existence of Mary- Queen of Scots. The book investigated her whole story, digging deeper into archival documents (spread across 4 countries), which no historian had worked systematically since the 1890s. Not just a martyr but a fully realized tragic heroine!🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿👑
