why not, when all the queens are still inside the cells, just cut the whole comb into 5, each part having exactly 'one' queen cell with number of bees, and place them each in one separate hive with empty combs? Wouldnt be easier that way? It also reduces the possible queen casualties. Doesnt it?

For Varroa Mite control, have you (beekeeper) seen a solution called a Varroa Gate? This simple plastic strip is placed at the nest entrance, has holes for bee entry/exit, and is impregnated with a varroacide. It also harms neither her or honey the produce. Might be a solution for larger beekeepers using their colonies to pollinate orchards, but, they might be a mite solution.

Beekeeping is a huge hobby in Australia. You need a back lawn for sure and that's about it. If your unit is an apartment you can possibly arrange with the building manager to keep hives on the roof. Darrenholmes If the other hive has been queenless for a couple of days they'll accept the queen right away. To be safe I'd put her in a cage for a couple of days. How does the older queen kill the others without her stinger being stuck and causing her death?
@DougBrownVancouver7 жыл бұрын
Queens and workers are all female bees that are genetically identical when they are eggs. All female eggs contain two sets of genes, one worker set and one queen set. If the workers need a queen (died, old, departed) the workers begin feeding high-protein royal jelly to several eggs for around two weeks, and this action triggers the queen gene set to take over, and the egg gets queen characteristics. All eggs that didn't get royal jelly for two weeks become workers. The queen genes produce a queen that has very different characteristics: Large, working ovaries, no desire to fly, desire to lay eggs, and to answer your question, a smooth stinger with no barb. Her stringer doesn't get caught when the queen pulls it out of her sister.
@thefinder80877 жыл бұрын
That's crazy that just a bit of jelly makes a completely different kind of bee, nicely equipped for killing its rivals. Thanks for the reply!

valdrin beta Yes, if you want more colonies then you should move the queen cells into separate hives. Just make sure that the new hive doesn't have a queen and only has 2-3 frames of bees and brood. Make sure you have brood because those new bees will feed the queen.

So out of curiosity why did you not just cut the brood comb into pieces and transplant each piece to a new hive? You could have gotten pretty much all of the queens and a small work force for each queen without having to watch them constantly and having any regicide issues. At a small expense to a few of the worker brood
@DougBrownVancouver9 жыл бұрын

Awww I fely so bad for the poor second Queen who wasnt ready...couldn't you have broken off the other 'peanuts' carefully and hatched them to fly off even if you don't have other colonies? or would they die witout a colony to feed them straight away? I've always heard of Queen Bumble bees flying off looking for new colonies ..or is that a myth?
@DougBrownVancouver9 жыл бұрын
+fiona cahill Yes, you can definitely do that, but you need to have a box of bees ready for each new queen and if you're starting with just a single hive then you probably only have enough bees to split your hive in two. The new hive needs a lot of eggs, larvae, new and old bees because bees do different jobs as they age each week, and it's the newly emerged bees that feed the queen. When they reach just a few weeks of age they stop feeding the queen and begin gathering nectar so you need to have eggs and larvae that will grow into these nurse bees when the current nurse bees evolve to flying bees. Bumble bees behave completely differently than honey bees. Bumble bee queens are solitary and can unilaterally set up a new hive, but honey bees are social and only move about in groups. In fact, most queens never fly again once they're established in a good hive and only leave if the beekeeper doesn't provide enough excess space for her to lay more and more eggs.
@FIONA21ful9 жыл бұрын
+Doug Brown Thankyou that was really helpful to my curiosity , and very kind of you to to bother explaining. I find Bees so interesting. ..I knew Bumble Bees were different from the Honey Bee as I have seen many of the lone Bumble Queens on their spring scouts. I actually saved on last summer from dying of dehydration , I took her into the shade and placed water on a leaf and this Big Bee actually drank from the leaf. It was exhausted as some nasty kids had been msking its life miserable before I stopped them..but it revived very quickly and was much perkier aftter about 10mins rest. I would love to have a hive and when I move home to Ireland eventually I plan on starting one. Thankyou for your wonderful ...but sad! video ;-).
@jeffbecker87168 жыл бұрын
When you say the queen never flies again, I thought she had to fly for mating. Saw a video on that several years ago where there was a popping sound recorded at the moment of coitus where the male's organ gets ripped off and he dies. How many times does one queen typically mate/lay eggs?

so cut away each queen cell transfer to new hive do i move frame bees with her to new box
@DougBrownVancouver5 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. You need at least a frame of food (honey and pollen), a frame of capped/emerging brood to care for the queen before they start foraging, and at least a few frames packed with bees. You'll be setting up a new hive so remember that if you simply move a few frames with bees, some or many of these will fly back to the original hive, leaving the non-foraging bees. So make sure you keep adding bees in the days following. Ideally I would split a 2-box hive that are full of bees and you're assured of having enough of everything.
