Pre decimalisation I regularly had coins depicting Victoria, Edward VII, George V, George VI as well as Elizabeth II in my change. Notes always maintain their face value irrespective of age, they just need to be sent to the Bank of England for exchange. Being legal tender only applies to the settlement of debt, not everyday life.

@winco682 жыл бұрын
@@anthonydoyle7370 But they would have. Although decimalisation was finalised in 1971 some pre decimal coinage remained legal tender into the 1990s. This was the one shilling (5p) and two shilling (10p) coins. This was because they were exactly the same size shape and weight as their decimal replacements and remained in circulation. Some of those coins dated from just after WW2 and were dated 1946/47 I remember using them as a child in the 70s and 80s. The ones prior to 1952 bore the kings head and along with later editions bearing dates up until 1967 with the Queen’s head were finally taken out of circulation 1990/93 with the introduction of the new smaller 5 and 10p coins. Thats a rather fun way to tell everyone that any business that refuses cash has no recourse to the law. From the BoE: 'Legal tender has a narrow technical meaning which has no use in everyday life. It means that if you offer to fully pay off a debt to someone in legal tender, they can’t sue you for failing to repay.' This does not cover shops, who can refuse to tender goods in return for cash, but does cover service charges & taxes. Note that Cheques, Debit and Credit Cards, and Contactless are NOT legal tender.

It also had 6 coins that had been bent double over the thong. We were chatting with the curator in his office when he kept looking closer and closer at her necklace. He said "Those are real aren't they?" Yes says my friend. "Silver Dirhams?" He says, looking at the large silver coins - yes says my friend. "What's that in the middle?" "Gold manchus" says my friend, the beads are originals too - lapis lazuli" "Why have you bent the pennies over the thong?" asks the curator. "I didn't bend them." says my friend - " that's how they were when they were found." (the pennies were all Saxon silver pennies - originals of course). "Oh!" says the curator -"We've got a few bent like that but we never knew why." "To keep them safe from cutpurses." says my friend. "Of course!" says the curator - "It makes sense now!" She was walking around London with about £3000 worth of original early medieval coins around her neck. Probably a lot more now as this was about 15 years ago.The thong, of course, was the only thing that was new.

On a £10 Banknote (for example) it says, "I promise to pay the bearer on demand the sum of Ten Pounds" ....... So what do you receive? ...... Another £10 note? 😂😂😂
@Capt.Safety2 жыл бұрын
that promise is in refrence to when we where on the gold standard (i.e. when all money was baked by gold or sumtimes silver). so you use to be able to walk into the bank of england and get 10 Lbs of gold, but since gorden brown sold off of britions gold, that "promise" is redudnt.

The whole idea of Legal Tender is mostly nonsense for the average person. No notes in Scotland are "legal tender" yet it's made no difference to them. There is no law saying you cannot use old notes in a shop. It's up to the shop owner.

Gold and silver should be the only legal tender. Debt is not real money and is what is killing the middle class and poor while enriching those who issue currency. Bring back gold and silver to put the power back to the people.

The notes and coinage have always changed after a new sovereign starts their reign. This isn't new. Yes, it will take time, and may cost a bit. But there is a silver lining here today. Today we have technology that should make it a lot easier, and environmental friendly too. Plus, it isn't as simple as people think. It's not just the design, but the security features, and additional protections too. Then you add the commonwealth countries, Isle of Mann, Guernsey, Gibraltar, Jersey, just to name a few, you can see how massive this logistic problem is. It is also an opportunity too, for countries to add a special person or landmark onto their notes, which wouldn't have happened in years gone by. Here's a thought. After the second World War this country was broke. In fact we had to borrow money from the United States, at very high rates of interest, and give away precious inventions like the jet engine, the first computer, to name just two, just to keep the country running. This money also help create the NHS too. Thinking about that. How much did it cost in the 1950's, when we were still using ration books, to change from their late majesty King George VI to HM Queen Elizabeth II?. Just a thought.

Okay, I'll go slow for you. When mummy and daddy spend money buying you sweets the shopkeeper takes that money to a bank. A bank is a big building where lots of money is kept. When someone goes to the bank to get some money instead of giving them the "old" bank notes and coins they give them shiny new coins and crisp notes. I hope that I didn't go too fast or use words that were too big. Please, pass this on to your friend.
