In 1940, as the Battle of Britain was raging in the skies above, Prime Minister Winston Churchill asked a young Princess Elizabeth II to speak on the radio to give encouragement to the children of Britain who had been evacuated in the face of Hitler's onslaught. It would be her first public address to Britain and the world.
Queen Elizabeth II would go on to serve in WWII before becoming the longest serving Queen of England. She passed away on September 8th, 2022.

I agree too. But are you also mindful that it wasn't her words she was saying, but what's been written for her to say, and that she had to practice for several weeks? I admired the Late Majesty, but at this age, she was a child like any normal child. She was just born into a different family and came to the responsibility of Heir Presumptive to the throne, which of course came with responsibility. So, at this age, she was taught to speak and even breathe before doing this, she just did well learning it all.

I teared up listening to this. I know my late Father must have listened to this broadcast. He was 6 years old at the time and lived in East End London. His Father had just been killed at the beginning of WWII. He, his Mom and sister were put on a train and sent to live out in the country, away from the regular bombing raids. Queen Elizabeth, even at this young age, provided some hope and stability to a population that was struggling with uncertainty. Her example of selfless service to her constituency should be aspired to by all in leadership positions. Thanks for posting.

@@TheHistoryUnderground I enjoy your channel. It's informative and entertaining. My parents immigrated from Britain to the US in 1962 so I've always had a foot in each culture. Very thoughtful timing for this presentation. As a baby boomer I grew up knowing only Elizabeth II as queen of the U.K. My mother thought so highly of her being of the same or closely same generation. I don't remember if I ever told you my mother was among the college kids that made fried chicken for Churchill and Truman in Fulton, Mo. I guess that is the closest I ever got exposed to British celebrity. This message is timeless. Tonight I am thanking God for these two beautiful and strong women. These days, however, rather than saying make the world better for our children we perhaps should encourage making our children better for the world. Keep up the fine work, Keep traveling, my virtural friend.

Fantastic! when my Dad was in the 8th army air corp stationed at the Debach air base. They adopted what he referred to as orphans. They would write home to get food and other things for Christmas parties. It took us a while to realize that the orphans were the children that were evacuated from London. He took a picture of group of children standing under the wings of a B 17, we still have it to this day.

Children of that time and period in our history were forced to grow up very fast. The events taking place in the world at that time forced the issue. My father, a survivor of the Dieppe Raid (Red Beach) in 1942, wanted me and my brother to have normal childhoods. That was his wish. He didn't want anything to take place that would force us to confront the reality of the day and leave childhood behind. Part of his wish was fulfilled.

Thanks for this tribute JD. I speak as a baby boomer born in the early sixties and unashamedly a monarchist, because the very nature of our constitution means the Head of State has no political power. She has seen political leaders & Governments come and go from both sides of the spectrum but has remained in her service. This elegant lady has been a stoic, steady and constant hand at the tiller for my Country 🇬🇧 and the Commonwealth family of nations in good times and bad. She has shown true leadership and compassion when it was needed most. In 2020 she gave a speech to the nation during the COVID crisis, when political leaders around the World were failing, and using her empathy and experience gave her people the reassurance and hope that we would come through it and be with each other again. A truly remarkable human being who represented a generation whose values have waned with time. God save the King 🇬🇧
