For their first seven albums, Queen made it a point of pride that they refused to use any synthesizers, printing “and nobody played synthesizer” on the record sleeves. They probably felt they had to specify this because May was capable of creating such otherworldly effects just with his guitar.

Those screams are Roger Taylor. This was the first album I ever got for myself. I was 12 and I talked my mom into this and Queen I & II. It blew my 12-year-old mind. 'Queen II' is an almost perfect album? ALMOST? Why, them's fightin' words in my household. We practically revere that album around these parts. But in all seriousness, 'Queen II' is one of my all time favorite albums. When 'Sheer Heart Attack' came out, it took my high school junior brain time to wrap around some of the songs on it (can you say "Bring Back That Leroy Brown"?), but now it's one of my favorite Queen albums. Once I saw them in '76 and they did "Leroy Brown" sans vocals (except for the "yeahs" and "shoo-be-doo-wahs"), I found a much needed acceptance for the briliance of the tune. These days I love every note of every song on the album.

This album was my introduction to Queen, right after its release, when I was, like 13 years old. It was like nothing I'd ever heard before, and it was the first time I could call myself a fan of a band. I absolutely love every single song, still. Awesome reaction and analysis. Queen did not use synths in the 70's, all the sounds are created by guitar and sometimes with vocals. They never really used other musicians on their albums, with only a handful of exceptions. In the early days it was all just them using what they had. People often have very different favourite Queen albums, Sheer Heart Attack is high on the list, but I like Queen I, Queen II and Innuendo more then Sheer Heart Attack. Queen's debut album especially is very underrated.

Stone Cold Crazy has often been considered the first Thrash Metal song, and it's not without credit because Metallica was eventually inspired by it and covered it later, citing it as a key influence on their sound. There are two other early Queen tracks that take Speed Metal by the horns: Modern Times' Rock N' Roll from 1973's Queen and Ogre Battle from 1974's Queen II.

Like many are saying, it's Roger (Meadows) Taylor's high harmonies you're so enthralled with. To get a better view, listen to some of the songs that he performs lead vocals on, "Loser In The End", "Fight From The Inside", "Drowse", and especially "I'm In Love With My Car". Such a distinct voice. Some of his solo albums are quite good, also. My personal favorite is 'Fun In Space'. Queen famously avoided synthesizers on their albums, going as far as to print "No synthesizers" in the credits. Not until 'News Of The World's' "Get Down, Make Love" did they stray away from that. edit: After seeing many comments about their first use of synths being on 'The Game', I went looking for proof that "Get Down, Make Love" had synths on it, but everything I see says 'The Game' was the first album to use synths. Ya learn something new every day. LOL!
@kozlorf
@kozlorf 2 жыл бұрын
The "synth" sound on "Get Down, Make Love" is a guitar effect - a harmonizer of some sorts. The first album where the synthesizer has been officially used was indeed "The Game". However, there is a song "Fun It" on their "Jazz" album, where Pollard Syndrums are used. So one may argue, that this is where it started...
@Drummingvulture
@Drummingvulture 2 жыл бұрын
@@kozlorf Well, that explains it very well. Thank you. Now I have to change my whole awareness of what I've always considered an important aspect of Queen. And I get what you're saying about the synth drums on "Fun It". Being a drummer myself, I've always known they were electronic, not acoustic. Why that didn't translate to "synthesizer usage" to me I'll never understand. LOL! Since all of my vinyl, cassettes and CDs are packed away (digital takes up a lot less space, eh?), so I can't look for myself, do you know if they used the "No synthesizer" tag on 'News Of The World' and 'Jazz'?
@kozlorf
@kozlorf 2 жыл бұрын
@@Drummingvulture Apparently, there's no "No synths" tag on these two. However, on "The Game" it says: This album includes the first appearance of a synthesizer (an Oberheim OBX) on a Queen album. I think that this whole "No synths" thing was mainly to make everyone aware, that all the "orchestration" that appeared on the albums was Brian's guitar, and nothing else. Since there's not much of orchestration on "News of the World" or "Jazz", they probably didn't bother putting the tag there ;)

Queen went so far as to routinely make it clear in their liner notes that there were NO SYNTHS. It wasn't until their album (and song) The Game that they finally used one, and of course there was a detailed comment stating it, along with which particular synth it was (I'd have to look it up, but I think it was an Oberheim (?)).

Metallica did a pretty good cover of "Stone Cold Crazy". Give it a listen if you'd like. James Hetfield was also brought on to sing it with the rest of Queen (+ Tony Iommi) at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert. Sadly, although I like "Misfire", it's kinda downhill from here to the rest of the album. Queen albums aren't the most consistent and this one is no exception. Their only albums I think are 'all killer, no filler' are Queen II and A Night at the Opera (Even though A Day at the Races is my favorite)

Roger Taylor had his finger on the pulse of the underground music movement and wrote a frenetic punk song to be the title track of this album. Studio execs said, no way, so they dropped the track but kept the title. Three albums later, they brought the song back. And it has one of the strangest little guitar solos I've ever heard. I love this album. It's all over the place stylistically, which I think is great. This one and Queen II are my favorites. Hey, nice shirt! Looks cool. Like a dodgy amalgam of ELO, and The Beach Boys, with the falsetto ripped from Dark Side of the Moon. Re SCC, slightly more palatable, fairly standard rock number. But even this, another amalgam, this time elements of Deep Purple, and Sweet. Yeah, not my cup of tea.

I like a lot of Queen's 1970's work, but they also recorded their fair share of clunkers, and side 2 of Sheer Heart Attack is pretty much a write-off for me.

@@delorangeade I was never really fussed on queen. I did/do really like 'Seven Seas of Rhye'. And i liked BoRap, initially, but found it got old fast. Other than those though... I think it was the sound of May's home made guitar, never sat well with me. And it wasn't like he didn't have the cash to buy a proper one 🙂

@@jfergs.3302 I blame the parents. I'm sure when young Brian asked Santa to bring him a guitar for Christmas, he was hoping for a shiny red Hank Marvin Stratocaster, not something cobbled together by his dad from bits and pieces found in the workshop off-cuts bin and parts of an old pram he fished out of the canal. Credit to Brian for being a dutiful son, keeping a straight face and getting on with it.

For the Nth time: THE HIGH VOICE BELONGS TO ROGER TAYLOR!

The good thing about having yet heard enough Queen is that there's plenty of Queen ahead of you - most of it good, an enormous amount of it superlative. What a prospect to look forward to! It might interest you to know that the drummer of *The Darkness* is Rufus Tiger Taylor - son of Roger. You can hear and see some of him here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/kJyyp3RraL52iLM (It's very appropriate, because the major avowed influences of The Darkness - and yes, one must use words such as "avowed" in this context - are Queen and AC DC, in no particular order of importance. It doesn't always show, but when it does, they've never been afraid to wear their hearts on their sleeves, and the influence is unmistakable.) That's another band you need to get around to. No, they're not among the "founding fathers", but they're a great band. And they don't take themselves too seriously, while at the same time taking their music very seriously - as in no detail is overlooked. (I mean great, not the colloquial "great" which really means OK.)

Re. Brian's "Theremin" sound, that's pure Red Special. That homemade instrument really has a unique sound quality. IMO, one of the only guitarists that can rival Brian May's lyrical and vocal qualities is Roger Waters.

I have trouble with Queen. Too bombastic to my liking and by the way Sweet and Sparks are better at grandiloquence.

Never forget that despite its many high points, this album has the song "Bring Back That Leroy Brown". THE absolute and most execrable piece of music. Its inclusion is the fatal flaw that, for me, catastrophically mars the entire record. Queen II is superior.
