Don't even mention those two. Ugh, they are such an embarrassment to The Crown! I'm hoping King Charles will be brave enough to call for Harry and Mehgan's titles to be stripped and the Letters of Patten to be recalled for their children as well. It's better for Beatrice and Eugenie to be stepped up as well as Edward's children. They are more worthy! 😊❤😊

Dane in semi chock here. We have not seen a own decided abdication since around year 11-1200! All expected she would follow tradition and stay until her last breath. This impacted our celebrations and many here speculate if there are yet undisclosed illness behind this. Others speculate if she have made the decision so coming King Frederik X and Queen Mary have a living back-up to consult for a period. Others again speculate if she have decided to abdicate to let them have a period reigning long enough for them to truly be able to make a historical impact. All speculations but it could be one or all three or a varity of other reasons in combination. Having said that...Queen to be, Crown princess Mary, have our full confidence. We Danes have no doubt in her abilities and you rightfully should be proud. Crown princess Mary have in her own right proved she are an open modern woman that can carry herself with intelligence and grace. I am sure nothing would make her more proud than going to her birth nation and open one of the long string of offshore windmill parks you and our atmosphere and waters so urgently need. We are very worried here that Australia now have overtaken USA as the nation with the highest large nation greenhouse gas emissions per Capita in the world. We should be at 220 PPM and are now above 420 PPM carbon content in our atmosphere. It are my guess it are no coincidence that Crown princess Mary and Crown prince Frederik that soon will be King Frederik (X) the 10th and Queen Mary.right now are together with Mary´s family in Tasmania.

I agree that the Queen of Denmark probably abdicated after seeing Queen Elizabeth II's funeral and how physically demanding and difficult the schedules and responsibilities are for King Charles II is and Queen Camilla. In all reality, it would have been a physically easier transition for King Charles II had he obtained the thrown 20 years earlier. Please don't misunderstand me, I think King Charles and Queen Camilla have done an absolutely fantastic job during this first year of transition. However, it's an extremely demanding position where King Charles often works past midnight. Can you imagine being beyond the age of retirement and having to work as much as they do?!!!

But she deserves to rest and hopefully this will make her life longer, as she will be free from the stress and pressure and hard work, and that can help her heal and her health get better! ❤ I will miss her so much, but I hope this means we get to keep her around much longer. Fun fact: here in Denmark we lovingly call her "Daisy" as did her late husband. Marguerit is the Danish word for daisy which is considered our national flower. She often wears jewelry with them. Even if she is abdicating and Frederik and Mary will be a very popular king and queen, she will always be our Queen mother. I love that he has her to guide him, and I think that was very intentional. She did it out of love for her people and her family.

I disagree with you here: if only the heir and his children are taken in consideration, then the royal families cannot do much. Imagine in the UK: if there's only William and his family, it would be a disaster. For many decades, queen Elisabeth II could count on her sister, her several cousins and her children to take on royal engagements, so William will need his cousins to help him.

The reason it is different for the monarch in England is that in addition to their role as head of state, they are also the head of the Church of England. If the habit of abdication at a certain point became prevalent, it would negate the vows that they take and the roll of monarch would be diminished. I would imagine that all sorts of laws would have to be changed and the cry for republicanism would become increasingly strong because--whats the point of having a monarch at that point? They may as well elect a president and if that happened, the Commonwealth would probably cease to exist.

You have brought up a very valid point that most haven't thought of.....you of coarse are right. Not to mention, The Wales' are still a very young family! Their children should be allowed to grow and mature before they take on the mantles of their titles. A 15 year old Prince Of Wales would not be ideal. I disagree. To be a unifying figure a monarch needs to be seen, to represent the kingdom, they need exist in view of the people, to patron causes, to be a part of the daily life of the nation. When a monarch no longer has the health and energy to undertake this task I believe it is better for everyone if they step aside and let the next generation take over. I am a Dane and a royalist, and I know the Danish tradition, like the UK one, is to serve to death. In fact that last abdication Denmark saw was over 500 years ago making this one a real break with tradition. However I sense that it is a tradition the Danish people have long been ready to break with, and the discourse around the subject have for years been "why doesn't she do it?" more than "Is there a risk she does it?" The Danish people love Queen Margrethe and would certainly love her to serve until death, but we also want a monarch fit to represent the Kingdom, the countries of the union and the peoples of the union. We have seen her giving more and more of her tasks to the crown-prince and princess over the years, with Margrethe fading more and more into the background and many of us have felt and expressed that it was fitting to make it official, even if tradition dictates otherwise. I think the Danish people would have been unhappy if she stepped aside when she was clearly still full of energy, because it would feel like she didn't really care. However everyone in Denmark is pretty clear at this point that the Queen no longer has much energy left and that she cannot bear the burdens of the monarchy any longer.

By stepping back now, I think Queen Margerethe will still be able to keep her oath to serve by being an active Queen Mother and advisor to Frederick and Mary, and will also be able to help their children adapt to their new circumstances. Queen Elizabeth had that support from her mother, and I think that could be a good idea for all the Royal Houses going forward

It is wonderful that Queen Margarite can step down and have a few years of peace and rest and allow her son to step up. We are so proud of Mary in Australia 🇦🇺, MM should have studied Mary, how a commoner becomes a princess and then a Queen, works hard to learn all the royal protocols, even had to learn quite a difficult language and now speaks Danish and does speeches (not MM word-salads)...and dresses beautifully and suits the occasion, is even friends with Catherine and William...has Never pushed her husband around or pulled him back so she can walk first!! And guess what, his 'Spare' the brother and his kids, have all gone off and got jobs, and are now given lesser titles now, instead of princess/prince, they have changed, and they certainly haven't written disgusting books or told lies about their family, no, they are working as models and in finance and stuff...so go work Meghan!! And watch and learn how a good person learns how to be Royal!!and carrys out their royal duties with honour and dignity!!!!

I read an interesting article on Quora today about the Queen. When Tolkien was writing his Rings trilogy he received some drawings from a young woman who enjoyed his books and wanted to know if he could use them. Well he liked them very much and did use them and it turned out her name was a pseudonym for Queen Margrethe though I don't know if she was Queen at the time. Pretty cool isn't it.

I can see how abdicating could be a good idea with kings and queens living much longer. However, there is a part of it that seems to take some of the magic out of the monarchy. As long as Charles had to wait to be King, having it happen upon the death of the Queen made the transition feel like an ancient tradition and continuity, that even in our modern world held a bit of mysticism and seemed above the norm. What Queen Margrethe did almost seems corporate in comparison.

It’s a very sensible choice the old Royals should have a timeline, if they’re in their seventies and ailing they should hand the crown to their heir, the Queen should have done that too, and let let them take the reign in their place, it would guarantee the future of the monarchy.

@@LouiseAndersen1991 Actually because she's a chain smoker I'd think she's regularly screened for cancer. She would probably get better than average medical care, not just due to access being a slight bit better because of any sort privilege (I doubt she likes to pull rank though it might be necessary), but rather from doctors being hyper vigilant when it concerns her. What doctor would want to miss any fatal symptom or misdiagnose a problem of the queen? So given that she's high risk of cancer, I'm sure they insisted on checking regularly. So if it is cancer, they'd know but just aren't saying ATM for whatever reason. Perhaps she wants to wait until after the coronation some time before making such a bleak announcement to the public that loves their queen- if that's even the case. Or maybe she's just getting old and worn out. I'm only in 50s, and can feel all the aches of my body. I have no doubt being 80+ can be a tough business even without cancer.

With the best medical care in the world, we see monarchs now living into their 90s and beyond. But really being a Queen or King is a lot like being CEO of a company. Do 80+ year old CEOs really help their companies too much? At that age, generally you should be taking it easy, spending time on your hobbies and with your family. I think around 50 is the PERFECT age to be a monarch. You are seasoned by experience, but still able to run the monarchy in the best way possible. I love QE2, but she was in her 90s when the Harkle scandal came along. Had she been 30 years younger, it would have never gotten out of control the way it did. Frankly there were a lot of things that could have been done to scare MM off in the first place. So I think this new tradition of abdicating at around 80 is good. Like I think KC should abdicate in 10 years. George will be finishing up college then at 20, William will be early 50s, and Charles will be 85.

Actually Queen Margrethe´s grandfather and great grandfather reigned into their 90s and her great great grandfather and great great great great grandfather into their 80s. But I am happy that she will get some down time and enjoy only being a senior citizen. It is a tough job.

Impossible to do if it was only the first in line involved. It’s not going to happen anyway where a British monarch abdicates in favor of the heir to the throne. As the monarch is also head of the Church of England, he or she is anointed. It presents huge problems if abdication were to occur. Not to mention, the abdication of 1936 still looms in the UK. It directly impacted the House of Windsor in no small way, and definitely shaped the reigns of George VI and Elizabeth II. There would be no way King Charles would abdicate in favor of William. And, no way William would abdicate. Change, yes. Charles is beginning to do that, and I think William will continue. Abdication, no.

I know this is not a popular opinion, but I do feel Queen Elizabeth should have dealt with both Andrew and Harry in a more detailed fashion. I think she was not well and just ran out of time. She HAS left something of a mess. Elizabeth was so well liked, she had the support of the people and could have pulled it off. Even if Elizabeth had started the ball rolling and then passed on, her wishes would have been known. She could have made it very clear that there was no half-in and half-out with Harry. Plus she could have started working on modernizing protocols for the LOS and for the giving of titles. I know she was a much-loved monarch, and it would have been hard on her, but if she could have made some tough decisions, current situations might be easier for the RF.

She dealt with Andrew. He has effectively retired. What else is there to do? And let's remember it's innocent until proven guilty which he never has been. As for the Harkles, in reality the original statement said it all, however, there is a 'perception' that too much leeway has been allowed them and it is the perception that is the problem. The totally incorrect media reporting has not helped and again should have been corrected.
@cherfromtn8225

Let me make a stab at some possible options. As for Andrew: I think the Queen needed to have a sit down with Charles and William and make it clear that she wanted Andrew to remain in his large castle for life and all decide together how much of an allowance would be needed for yearly upkeep. This housing allowance would show in the Crown's budget and would be given for Andrew's lifetime--provided he didn't visit any more islands! People would not have liked this budget arrangement, but the Queen was popular and could have carried this decision. At this point, if Andrew cannot afford the upkeep on that estate (which I have read is likely), then Charles is in the unenviable position of either kicking him out or paying for the castle's upkeep with Crown estate funds. He will be unpopular either way. If he kicks Andrew out, he also risks alienating his two York daughters who could become problems. If he uses taxpayer funds to pay for Andrew's big castle, he will be derided as well. Perhaps the annual castle upkeep will NOT be a problem, but I have heard two speakers who speculated it would be. If the Queen wanted Andrew to stay, she should have provided funds for him to do so. It should be an issue already decided and FUNDED. As for Harry: Long before now, the rules of succession and for the granting (and taking back) of titles should have been revised. At least the family and government should have been discussing this, in general terms. It was only a matter of time before someone started manipulating Harry. I believe the RF knew they had a weak link and just hoped they could keep him in line and he would eventually grow up. At the very least, the palace needed to have protocols in place to ensure the children met the criteria for being in the LOS. Where are the DNA results? Where is the documentation provided by a palace-approved physician? At least one should have been in attendance at that birth--even if Megan had her own physicians. There is NO reason for all this controversy about the children. I also think it should be stipulated that the children be raised in the country to be in the LOS. If someone wants their children to be in the LOS, they have to meet the LOS rules. This should be a no-brainer. I also think there needs to be a mechanism in place to tie the titles to working positions. Perhaps also to limit how many generations down the line the titles go. Perhaps as people like Lady Louise decide to work for the monarchy, they would be given a special title. If their job is no longer needed, that title (and allowance) reverts back to the Crown. Perhaps the only grandchildren who need prince and princess titles are the ones from the primary heir--unless such grandchildren are invited to work as royals--in which case they would be granted a special title at that time. I also like the idea of a "royal apprenticeship" before someone becomes a full working royal. It would have been wiser to NOT bring in Harry and gift him with a Duke title before he (and especially Megan) had spent more time doing RF duties. They could have had some lower-level assignments for a year or so and see how that went. Let them visit hospitals and shake hands. Let them handle some smaller patronages first. I think it would have been readily apparent that Megan was not really suited to a second-fiddle lifetime of service. Mexit would not have been so sensational without those royal titles. These sorts of issues need to be decided by the British people, but the discussions could already have been started by the Queen. In this time of social media, monarchy choices play out on a global stage. Someone like Prince Harry retains a lot of power to cause trouble. You can read the online article in The Hill entitled "A Montecito Yankee in King Charles' Court" to see that Harry could be damaging not only Britain but the Western block as we are in a battle to retain influence. I think King Charles has a right royal mess, and there are no easy fixes in sight. Eventually Harry may sink out of sight, but who knows what damage he is doing to your Commonwealth alliance in the meantime. The Queen allowed Harry this position of power and did not even demand any proof of the children meeting the LOS rules. I know she is much loved but she has some responsibility in allowing these issues to continue.

I think the best transition would be when the successors' oldest kids have turned 18. I think this will give a chance to the successors to build their own families, a better transition between generations for the public and family, as the active people in society would be the younger generation, it better to showcase people of similar age, allowing them to fantasize about the family and to take away the pressure off for the elders too since stress can age a person by a lot. and as the new 18-year-olds, they can also be part-time royals for now to get a sense of what the job requires.

I think the big difference between the late Queen E-II & Queen Margrethe regarding their successors is that the sons of then Prince-of Wales are adults with their own lives, while the sons of Prince Frederik are barely adults still living with their parents. Perhaps QEII deferred to her son regarding the handling of his adult children as opposed to Queen Margrethe's grandsons.

I am not surprised Queen Margarethe abdicated. She’s been on the throne for over 50 years. I had thought she would decide to enjoy a retirement where she can focus on her art and other interests. I am sure the backlash she experienced from removing the princely titles to Prince Joachim’s children was highly stressful and a big motivator. Plus, like Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands who experienced a family tragedy with the loss of her son. It probably was a crucible moment and she chose to live a semi-private life.
