Notice the glass of champagne on the piano. Brian said they put it there because Freddie always had one after their recording of a song was complete. At the end of this video this glass disappears. Brian actually has Freddie’s piano in his office at his home.

Brian sings 39, All Dead All Dead, Sail Away Sweet Sister, for example. Roger sings Tenement Funster, Modern Times Rock and Roll, I'm in Love with my Car. And all the really high notes you hear in Bohemian Rhapsody, Lap of the Gods, 39, etc. are Roger's falsetto.

Brian split lead vocals with Freddie on Who Wants to Live Forever. I don’t think I want to know how many times they had to record this to be able to get through it. I can see where writing and recording this could be cathartic for Brian and Roger, sadly it didn’t seem to help Deaky much. He stayed on long enough to perform at the tribute then he just couldn’t do it anymore without Freddie there was no joy in music for him anymore. He retired and has not recorded or performed publicly since.

John doesn't sing, but he doesn't need to. His talents lie elsewhere. He wrote some of Queen's greatest hits, and he is responsible for some of the most memorable and iconic bass lines in the world. John's so quiet and unassuming, but this is the man who gave us hits like "You're My Best Friend" and "Another One Bites the Dust". Without him (and without Freddie, of course), Brian and Roger can still play their music (with a little help from Adam Lambert), but they can't write truly good new Queen music on their own. They tried once. It didn't work out very well. John made a huge impact on the band, even if he looks like a background player most of the time.

Don't forget "I want to break free", "Cool cat", "Back chat", "Misfire", "If you can't beat them", "Friends will be friends". I saw them in concert and he did do some background vocals but mostly chants like Radio Ga Ga, Don't stop me now and Lap of the Gods.

Also, his amazing bass on stuff like Millionaire Waltz, Dragon Attack, Under Pressure, A crazy little thing called love, Breakthru, The invisible man....basically all of their songs. He also played guitar on Backchat and Cool cat, not Brian, and some piano like Spread your Wings and You're my best friend. He just preferred to stay in the background.

What really strikes me listening to this is that Brian could've had a solo career. He has a frontman, lead singer voice. He's a frickin' guitar god. He could've had his own name in lights, if he'd wanted to. Maybe if he had a bigger ego and need for attention he would've. But it seems like he actually let some of his talents stay in the background, like he cared about Queen as a collaboration more than a need to be alone in a spotlight. That makes me think he's probably a really loyal, humble guy. It's cool to see people who aren't just amazing musicians, but really remarkable human beings. Also what makes Queen something special, all amazing at what they did, but also seeming to have a special loyalty to each other and their band. Even Freddie, who couldn't help but capture the spotlight, always seemed to talk about them all as equals, like they were a team, they were all vital to making the magic that the band had. A lot of times when great musicians get together in one group, the fame goes to their heads, clashing egos and jealousies will rip the whole thing apart. They kept that bond and loyalty.

John Deacon had a degree in electrical engineering. He designed a special amplifier called the Deaky that Brian would use to change the sound of his guitar. He mentions it in the documentary. That’s how they got the trumpet sound near the end of Bohemian Rhapsody.
@susieq9801
@susieq9801 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Jude - No one has ever been able to duplicate that amp. He made it partly out of parts he found in a garbage bin. It gives Brian's home made guitar the ability to create the unique orchestral and even vocal sounds that are his trademark. Between Deaky's writing, musicianship and electrical skills he made amazing contributions to Queen. Too bad he's so often ignored. NOT BY ME!

That’s why their harmonies were so good. Brian had a medium warm sound and Roger had a very high voice. John doesn’t sing. They wrote this song well after Freddie died because they couldn’t do it earlier- too hard for them. Still grieving for their friend. It’s heartbreaking. John quit when Freddie died. Only played for tribute concert in April 1992, a special that Elton John had and returned to do this song for Freddie’s memory. He was quoted saying “Queen died when Freddie did”. I read he took his death especially hard and went into a deep depression. He’s rarely even seen out of his house.

This was the last time he played with them. John Deacon. Roger and Brian both have solo works. So does Freddie. John never really sang. He would but always had his mike turned down when he sang on stage. He doesn’t think he has a good voice. It probably is but with the other three being so exceptional I can understand why he would think that.

darlene sheatham - I saw them live in 1980. At that concert John's mike was not turned down and at times he used Freddie's which obviously was live. He did mostly chants like in Lap of the Gods, Radio Ga Ga, Don't stop me now, Liar, etc., but his voice was audible and I thought it was quite alright. I think he was just shy and lacked confidence since he was competing with three great singers and, I agree with you, who wouldn't? He was also a baritone with three tenors and could have been a bigger asset if not so shy. He wrote many of my favourite Queen songs and don't forget he built the Deaky amp for Brian that enables him to make his guitar sound so unique. Regardless, Deakie was my favorite. Cheers.

Oh yeah the three of them always sang together. If you listen to the beginning of “ Who wants to live forever” The official video, Brian May is singing in the beginning and somewhere in the end w/Freddie. Roger Taylor had that high-pitched falsetto in the Galileo operatic section of Bohemian Rhapsody and they all did the harmonies except a bass player. He would sing in concert but the bass player did not sing in the songs on the records. You should listen to LIVE IN MONTREAL Somebody to love 1981. You will hear a lot of Roger Taylor’s singing and he is one hell of a drummer and a singing drummer!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️ If you want to hear John singing you have to look up a KZbin video specifically mentioning him singing because he has with Freddy on a KZbin video but not on a record

Lots of great comments and suggestions for songs with Brian and Roger as vocalists. Have a listen also to Brian’s song “Driven by You” - great rock tune. I can imagine Freddie’s vocals being really suitable for that song... I always thought of John as Queen’s secret weapon. What he brought to the table was always subtle - except when he was the songwriter (then he was in his glory), but without John, Queen’s synergy would have been diminished. Massive respect for the man. Individually they are/were all legends. Together they are greater than the sum of their parts. They knew it, and it’s what kept them together.

Brian & Roger do have wonderful voices. This is such a beautifully poignant song. A loving tribute. I don't think Freddie drew the picture of Icarus, so much as it is the mythological image of the "flying too high toward the sun" part. LOVE Teo Torriatte! Queen love their fans - who else would think of thanking their fans in Japan where they were a huge sensation by having Japanese verses in the middle of a song. Also Las Palabras de Amor was written to thank their Spanish speaking fans (after their massive success in South America). A great band with fantastic music innovations- who else but Queen would have a flamenco guitar interlude in Innuendo and Freddie Mercury's duet with Montserrat Caballe breaking out into gospel mid-song?

Thank you for this reaction. The song tears my heart to shreds every time. It is loaded with symbolism, & references to several Queen songs. The more you listen, the more of it you will catch. Roger's falsetto was positively stratospheric. On this one, "Queen Live at the Rainbow (1974) - In the Lap of the Gods" at about 1:45, you can hear him screaming. He's also done some very good solo work. You might enjoy reacting to Strange Frontier, Foreign Sand, The Unblinking Eye, (Everything is Broken) I Want to Testify, & Journey's End. He also sang on some of the songs he wrote for/with Queen, Drowse, Tenement Funster, & I'm In Love With My Car. Check out a live version of the latter, the longest one you can find. Brian has also released a couple of solo albums, sounding very different from his work with Queen.

The Black Queen - I heard them live in concert in 1980 and while he doesn't compare to the other three, John sounded OK to me. Ever hear Neil Young or Bob Dylan? Yikes. He was better than them! My grandmother (RIP) was better! Wish he would have sung at least one of his own compositions.

@@susieq9801 That is SO true about Neil Young and Bob Dylan. Amazing songwriters, not so great at actually singing. But you give Dylan's music to pretty much anyone else, and it's absolutely fantastic.

May and Taylor could have been lead singers in any band and supported Freddie fantastically. Deacon couldn't sing but was a bassist and songwriter extraordinaire. They were an extraordinary quartet.

I believe Roger had a 7 octave voice, Freddie 5 octaves, May (not sure but uber creative in song writing, plus lead & Deacon was brilliant as their bass player.

Check out Brian's songs... '39 -- Leavin' home... Long away.. and Someday one day -- for John Deacon - writer who didn't sing... sometimes in videos they would put him by a Mic and he would lip-sync - but he never was a singer...

Well, damn. I haven't cried yet today, so what the hell. I recommend the song '39 written by Brian May. Brian sings it on the studio version, but Freddie always sang it live, but you can find videos of Brian singing it himself from the past few years. It's one of my favorite Queen songs. John never sings.

Watch "the making of" videos. Brian does one about BoRap. They recorded each voice singing different parts. Roger said they over dubbed so many times on a 16 track tape that it was transparent. I like their music because it had so many voices that it was almost a choir. Love your reactions.
