I did my two years National Service 1949/51 most of which was spent at RAF Uxbridge. It was then the home of various units including the Central Band of the RAF and RADU. This stood for Recruits Advanced Drill Unit and a pleasure to watch. It was subsequently renamed and reformed as part of the RAF Regiment and is I believe now located at nearby RAF Northolt.

it's not a FAL it's a L1A1 self loading rifle. It uses the same ammo 7.62x51mm but was adapted for British use by lightening the barrel and getting rid off the automatic capability. We did slope arms but only at the rest as it meant resting the butt (the bit you put to your shoulder) on the ground
An Aussie who served using the "right arm of the free world" on parade agrees. Props mate , the SLR will go through a fucking tree it hits that hard.

@@thecurlew7403Indeed. 7.62 against 5.56. I'd choose a heavier rifle as we trained hard to take more weight. Extra range and stopping power. They moved to 5.56mm to accomodate others. Loved the SLR.

I'd imagine it's so that every country can develop their own rifles based on what they need out of it For instance, the Swiss need a rifle that can operate in cold and high temperature While the Spanish need a rifle that can operate in sandy, hot environments
@shanebowden71145 жыл бұрын
May I ask, what's this based on? From talking around and through some of my own experiences I would say the SA80 family is better than the HK416.

Austrians sloped arms with FAL... wai didn't the Brits... :(
@bugler752 жыл бұрын
They did when it was first introduced but it was found to be unnecessary . The Shoulder Arms (Trail Arms for the Light Division) and the Order Arms was enough for practical and smart parade use. The very early L1a1’s retained the cocking handle of the FN Fal which didn’t fold away like the later ones we had and this may have damage uniforms/medals etc. Potentially this may have been a reason. I have only ever found one photo that was in Soldier Magazine at the time and I saw in an old SLR Drill pamphlet index Slope Arms from the Shoulder Arms. But the pamphlet had been updated and the Drill Movement removed. Just my opinion supported by some evidence. If anyone has any proof I’d love to be corrected! I am that nerd! All the best.

This not drill, it is showboating. Proper drill had a purpose and there is only two types for infantry...heavy and light. This is embarrassing, a chorus line nothing more.
