Sorry Jane, but if there was a chance of recovery they would never announce this. They wouldn't even say she was feeling poorly or tired. This is what we in the health care field call "the warning shot over the bow", or "raising black drapes". Oh, no! I so admire and respect Her Majesty, what a wonderful leader she has been for so long. I’ve never seen her looking so thin and frail as in this recent photo with the new PM. I hope she pulls through the present difficulty and sees a full century in good health, but 96 is quite old. It worries me on a more personal level, too, she’s only three years older than my Dad and I already lost my Mom this June. I’m American and wouldn’t want a monarchy for my country, but it is the choice of the British people, and I just can’t imagine a better monarch than she has been for so long.

Similar story. I was at Weeton barracks In Lancashire when I was a kid. My uncle was in the Queen’s Lancs regt. The Queen was attending a ceremonial event there. I wandered off and saw a group of people standing near a footpath so I went over just in time to see the Queen arriving. She walked right up the path past me. Decades later in 2012 I was there to see her travel up the Leeds and Liverpool canal on a narrowboat when she visited Burnley with Prince Philip and Prince Charles.

Regarding King Charles. He has had his issues but I’ve always respected his views on the environment and he is well liked in his Duchy and other lands where he often interacts with locals. I live close to Burnley in Lancashire, a town he has visited many times and is fond of. I saw him as a child when the school lined us up outside a train station to wave at his car. I wouldn't be surprised if Princess Diana's friend-who also counselled and adult William on the death of his mother, as well as giving him + Kate guidance on raising psychologically + emotionally healthy children-grief counsellor Julian Samuel was consulted on the notion of softening the blow of the inevitable death of the Queen by giving everyone a heads up w/the unusual message from the Queen's doctors. I genuinely think this was the Queen's and/or Charles' wish(es), which is incredibly kind and sensitive - and reflects a deep respect for not only the British people but all of the Queen's fans around the world.
